Hi guys, Well my power supply finally died last night so I can't ignore this issue anymore. I'm keen on the Corsair VX450W, but I am concerned about one thing: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=50405 <- suggests my old motherboard and this new power supply are a bad match due to 5...

I have that CPU, those temperatures are normal. It's a horrible CPU and will heat up a room in no time without a window open. Right now, I have my PSU fan and an 80mm fan at full speed as an exhaust, with another 80mm fan wedged into two open 5.25" bays with cardboard sucking air in. Current idle te...

Thanks FartingBob, I was also just looking at the Corsair VX450W which is a fair bit cheaper... any comments on that one? My current system includes an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and an AMD Athlon 3200+, with two hard disks - so yes it's overkill. With that said, I expect most systems available nowadays wo...

Enermax Modu82+ to outlast current PC?
Unfortunately my (5 year old) computer suffers from bad capacitors - on the motherboard and in my cheap power supply. Seeing as this computer is still fast enough for my requirements, I'm thinking about replacing the caps and buying a new power supply. Do you think the Enermax Modu82+ 525 would be a...

The "X-Ray light box" workstation?
Hey. I recently saw a gallery of photos of a *really* nice workstation setup, it was a DIY job and the desk was an X-Ray light box mounted on the wall, which provided really neat bias lighting. I can't for the life of me remember where it is - I've searched SPCR with no luck but it could have been o...

Zener diodes are generally designed for low current applications, like signal processing. It's no surprise that you burned it out with a >10W load. If you want to efficiently drop the voltage to your fan, just buy a DC-DC regulator from somewhere like ti.com, but the savings are going to be near inc...

Neat idea. Have you seen photos of Intel's recent "Home theatre" targeted Mini-ITX boards? You'll see they potted the coils in some kind of ceramic or rubber. I was thinking about mixing some epoxy, making up a "cookie cutter" for my coils and encasing them in epoxy, but I like this electronic solut...

I know this thread is over a month old, but I have to ask: Were you renting out your render rig as a work-at-home job? I've pondered renting CPU time once or twice. Do the dirty work of setting up a zippy optimised cluster and rent that baby out. If not what were you up to that required such horsepo...

E1200 Vs. E2200: Performance and temps?
Hi folks, I'm tossing up between the E1200 and E2160 / E2180 / E2200 (Either all, whichever is more popular). My main issue is temperature, due to space constraints I may have to use a northbridge cooler rather than whatever is provided stock (I have about 2-3cm clearance above the CPU die). Does th...

Thanks Blacktales - I thought it was that unit but my Google Foo isn't quite as good as yours so I wasn't 100% certain. Unfortunately that HSF won't quite cram into the case I have in mind, any comments on whether I could get away cooling the E1200 with a northbridge cooler such as: http://www.neweg...

E1200 stock heatsink / fan information?
I'm looking at building a mini-ITX system where space is at a premium. Does anyone have photographs, or dimensions (particularly height) of the stock E1200 HSF? Failing that, could you point me in the right direction for the smallest possible aftermarket HSF unit for this CPU? Not sure about power c...

Standardization of system categorization.
I've seen a few so called "Passively cooled" processors around here and have been somewhat perplexed by their owners' proclaimed passive cooling system. It seems that if there is no fan directly mounted to a heatsink, then it can be considered passive - even if it is a mere 2 to 3cm away from a case...

Has anyone considered a "parallel chimney" design?
I'm just wondering if anyone has considered (or even attempted) a parallel chimney design in achieving a system cooled entirely by natural convection. I drew up a (very) rough illustration in Paint which should explain what I'm trying to say: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/4390/imgwj3.th.gif Com...

LG W2252TE - "World's most energy efficient monitor&quo
I just saw this browsing Engadget this morning and thought of SPCR. LG seems to be releasing an LCD screen built around energy efficiency. The contrast ratio seems a bit crazy and it wouldn't surprise me if they have cheated by using Samsung's trick (variable brightness backlight). Anyhow, here's th...

Thanks, I'll give that trick a shot when I can reproduce the whine again (Doesn't seem to occur in the mornings) However... What does occur in the mornings is an oscillating high pitch tone. The kind you hear from a television - very crisp without any of the "roughness" like with VGA coil whine. It ...

Squealing sounds during display updates / gaming
Hi, I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. Whenever there is a significant visual update on my screen (E.G, loading a webpage, or playing a game) my desktop emits a constant but "snowy" or "rough" sounding high pitch squeal. So high, in fact, that I can't isolate where it's coming from...
