Re: Quiet SLI Gaming PC Build Guide

Are we reading the same review? http://cdn.overclock.net/7/7d/7ddb344c_computerbase.jpeg I think you are reading the graph wrong. Pay attentention to the 5V and 12V. For 5V the DirectCU II gets 80c when rotated 90° and 83c normally. At 12V it's the same 3c difference. I would not call that dramatic...

I never said they didn't work, I said they don't work as well as reference cards... According to the German review you provided in the next post, they do work as well as reference cards. When they rotated the case by 90° - turning it into a conventional one - the reference card's temps rose by 4c, ...

No, you said "non-reference GPUs increase CPU temps in the FT/RV series ". The FT/RV series is uniquely affected by this circumstance, as has been demonstrated over and over in reviews and owner's threads across the internet Got any links? Easy their pal, no need to be unfriendly... Non-reference GPUs increase CPU temps in just about ANY closed case. I know - that's what I said :) No, you said "non-reference GPUs increase CPU temps in the FT/RV series ". Think of the the heatsinks as huge radiators emitting heat - if the total heat o...

Re: Quiet SLI Gaming PC Build Guide

The Fortress FT05's layout is a huge advantage, as the video cards' thermal loads do not interfere with each other much compared to a standard tower. Could this claim be tested by rotating the case 90 degrees such that it's a 'standard' front2back airflow case? This has been done and it showed that...

many have tested and shown that non-reference GPUs increase CPU temps in the FT/RV series. Non-reference GPUs increase CPU temps in just about ANY closed case. More CPU headroom might decrease overall temps :?: How? SLI is probably the one situation where GPU TDP plays a role in CPU temperatures, e...

Also I don't understand why one GPU is so much hotter than the other (I presume GPU1 is the one upper on the motherboard). Indeed. I'm disappointed that this wasn't investigated further (or at all...). With this great discrepancy in temps, I would almost suspect a faulty card/cooler. Not only is th...

Re: Easiest, simplest micro-ATX to build silent PC in?

With your requirements, I'd definitely go Mini-ITX. Bitfenix Prodigy or Fractal Node 304. Both accept large tower heatsinks (i.e. Thermalright HR-02, champion of quiet coolness) and both feature dedicated air intakes for PSU and GPU. For the graphics card, you'll want an MSI Gaming (a.k.a. Twin Froz...

Re: Quiet Liquid Cooled Gaming PC Build Guide

Tim, completely agree that there's not much point to water cooling - except if you use multiple hot GPUs in crossfire or SLI. The best silent air coolers sadly aren't very crossfire/SLI friendly, and put a much higher thermal load on the system itself when it comes to airflow etc. I don't know. The...

Another interesting lesson is that low liquid flow rate need not be an obstacle to good cooling Indeed. i guess AMD purchase of ATI was a mistake? That depends on whether or not it was the financial and logistical burden of merging the two companies that made Bulldozer be the failure it was. Wouldn't make sense. The idea behind big.LITTLE is that smartphones are used predominantly with the screen off. Idling in your pocket, your phone is listening for calls, checking e-mails, scanning for wifi, etc... For those idle tasks, it's potentially benefitial to have a dedictated low power/perfo...

Re: Journey to a Silent MicroATX Gamer

Don't want to be overly cynical, but this whole article is set up by the choice of a bad case. As has been true for the last 10 years, if you want silence, your case should accept 160mm tall CPU heatsinks. That would really be the conclusion of the article. Get a case that accepts an HR-02 and a Str...

Re: New Seasonic Snow Silent PSU

There clearly has been some small improvement in efficiency if the fan now only typically switches on at 50% load. Not necessarily. 50% of 1050w is 525w, which is the wattage of SeaSonic's highest power passive PSU. So in essence, you get that passive PSU with 525w additional fan-cooled watts on to...

We are now at a stage where you can build a truly silent PC (not just pretend it's silent). :) I built my first truly silent PC in 2008. Re: Why are people talking about 120mm fans still? curious

1. There's still a better selection of 120mm fans, especially from proven manufacturers like Scythe, Noctua or Noiseblocker. 2. Most CPU coolers and radiators still take 120mm fans (or 140mm fans with 120mm holes) 3. While most new cases do have 140mm mounts, almost all of them also have 120mm-only-...

I mean, there's no hot-swap graphics cards, right? As far as I know it's a pretty integrated part of the system. Impossible to just shut down, leaving the rest of the system running along without it, and then let it come back again, without some serious work. It's possible. See: http://en.wikipedia...

That will be cutting it close. The 160 Watts rating is fine and dandy, but the PicoPSU 160XT delivers only 8A max current on the 12V rail according to the manual. That's 96 Watts. It does 15A peak load for 60 seconds or so. Seeing that gap, I think sustained max load of 10A may be possible if you ai...

What works as a passive exhaust will work as a passive intake too.

Keep the default airflow which will remove hot air of GPU and CPU from the case and draw in fresh air through the side vent. I concur with your questioning the effectiveness of the front intake fans.
