Re: Advice on an almost silent new setup.

The power supply still does "hiss" noise, but I got used to it (gets masked by room sounds). It is the only bad thing about it.

Re: Advice on an almost silent new setup.

Yes, I bought it through the link provided on pico-box to aliexpress. The package is sent from China so it takes some weeks to arrive. Regarding the electrical noise, it comes from the DC-DC. I don't remember hearing it lately, let me give you more feedback in a couple of days, I'll take attention, ...

Re: Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.

There is not much I can remove. Only the front 18cm fan and three of the four memory sticks.

Based on what you say something must be wrong. I suspect it is related to the motherboard, but resetting BIOS didn't make any difference neither, I have to recheck that and the hardware.

Re: Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.

Hi guys,

got another measure gadget, same results.

I guess 37W is my absolute minium (with 3 ssd), not that bad compared to my old Q6600.

Thank you again!

Re: Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.

Either the gadget is broken or something is wrong with the mobo or pico. That build, even with a few 12CM low rpm fans and an efficient psu, should not pull more than 25W at idle. Thank you very much for the suggestion, didn't think about that. But I changed the power supply and the consumption was...

Re: Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.

Hi guys, thank you for your answers! I've checked all settings on BIOS. As I use Linux I've not been able to use Windows tools, but anyway I managed to stop any program so I got the cpu at 800Mhz almost 100% of the time, and it went down to 34W. I start to think that my wattage measure gadget is not...

Can't get below 40W idle on Haswell CPU.

Hello, I have a new computer with an i7-4790, 3 SSD disks and 32GiB of memory. For some days since I started using it I was measuring ~20W at idle load with it, since I touched something on BIOS I can not get it to go below ~40W. I have tried to reset the BIOS and load default values but doesn't hel...

Re: Advice on an almost silent new setup.

I finally ordered the computer! several things are different from original specs though. Got the i7-4790 instead of the T version so I may undervolt it and/or underclock later (thank you MikeC). Got 3 ssd drives (raid5) instead of ssd+mechanical disks (yay!). Got pico box x3-atx-300 and 19V 150W bri...

Re: Advice on an almost silent new setup.

After some search I'm going for the PicoPSU-160-XT with a 120W or 192W 12V level5 brick as found here . I think this setup can be powered with something like 80W, or for sure with 120W. The 192W brick would let me some room for future expansion though, and due to efficiency I don't think it would wa...

Thank you very much Abula for your post, very useful information for me, really.

Right!

I've everything chosen, but I have to decide about power supply. I am about to buy everything but still pending on this.

Re: Advice on an almost silent new setup.

@Vicotnik: after some hours reading and searching I've decided to go with the picoPSU option. My choices were in between BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro 10 550, Seasonic X-400 Fanless and picoPSU. I've done my homework for 3-4 hours and decided to go with picoPSU. Any of the other two options seems very goo...

Re: Advice on al almost passive new setup.

I kind of get what you are looking for but for me a few things seems wrong. An ATX case and a picoPSU for example. With fans in there why go passive on the PSU? Noise impact would probably be minimal with a normal ATX PSU and the system would be less complex. I agree, but I want a system which I ca...

Re: Advice on al almost passive new setup.

Having a slower CPU will cost you time you know.. ;) With a fan in there I would go for a normal CPU. If, for some strange reason you experience heat issues, it's not that time consuming to reboot, enter BIOS/UEFI and set 'max multiplier' to something lower than auto. :) Sure!, still I want to go w...

Re: Advice on al almost passive new setup.

What are you going to use VT-d for? Unless you intend to dedicate a specific hardware component to one VM you dont need VT-d. Right now I want to play with it, but I may use it later. I don't want to miss that feature. The other posters are right when they point out that the CPU you picked is delib...

Re: Advice on al almost passive new setup.

Welcome to SPCR Thank you very much. I did register on these forums several years ago, but it has not been until now when I can build my dream pc. - a "t" cpu is a cut off standard cpu, if you use the HR-22 and a slow spinning (= inaudible) fan you can use almost any standard cpu True, but I am loo...

Advice on an almost silent new setup.

Hello, I would like to ask advice for a new system I am about to build. After several years with my old and noisy quad q6600 I finally got the occasion to build a silent system as I wanted since years ago. I want a very low demanding, almost passive but powerfull system. This is the first time I att...

Hi,

I am in the same situation, with a Quad 6600.

I can choose between

· Scythe Mugen SCINF-1000
· Scythe Orochi
· Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme

The Orochi seems a beast, 1.2 kg with 10 pipes... has anybody used it?

Forgot to mention that I bought these because my first concern on my computer is silence, 2nd performance.

I never used 2.5 disks, but I assumed that any of them would be much better than 3.5. So I looked for the ones with better performance, and these samsung where within the bests.

I bought three of these to replace three 3.5 WD. These 3 where really noisy for me, and so I went to 2.5. I am really happy now. Obviously I have lost the 3.5 performace I had before, but still everything runs nice. I have them on a raid5 setup, and inside tacens lateo cases. Zero noise inside the c...
