The price is high for what's basically just a disk box. They claim a noise reduction (which I do believe) and a heat reduction too. For one reason or another I don't believe this last claim. On the site they "explain" the cooling possibilities as follows: 1. Others do use heatpipes, holes or vents. ...

Also ignore pages 11 and 12: CFM per dB.
It doesn't make sense to divide the CFM (linear) by the sound measured in dB (log scale).

Not a problem at all: if hdtach pushes the cpu load from nearly nothing to about 50% you really found (and probably removed) the bottleneck. In fact it would be perfect if hdtach uses 100% cpu, as this would mean the processor never stalls waiting for I/O, just running the hdtach code as fast as pos...

I've got two 640AAKS/Blue and there's no noise by the drives self. Mounted in my Solo (with the supplied tray mount/silicone grommets), there was an unpleasant humming sound. Sometimes the sound disappeared when I grab the front of the case. So probably it is vibrations, going to the case (via air o...

New Sharkoon fans with modular cable system

At the CeBIT, Sharkoon demonstrated the new Silent Eagle Modular Fans. With these 80 and 120 mm fans, with the typical golf ball design, you'll get four cables: A PWM cable, a 12V, a 9V and a 7V molex cable. Prices are 11 and 13 euro. With all the top fans, there is no sound from the fan construction itself. The only sound will be the air flowing through the case and the cooler fins. So the sound produced will be related to the actual CFM only. More CFM means a higher air flow, thus more noise. Maybe the Zalman is as good as the ...

I think all the coolers in the top 20 are good enough. Of course some are slightly better than others, which is important if you want to overclock seriously only. Running in the 4 - 4,5 Ghz range I mean. I choose a Scythe Mine myself, because of its weight (only slightly over the max weight specs of...

Scythe Katana III (announced)

The Scythe Katana III Cpu cooler appeared on the Japanase Scythe site. With dimensions of 94x108x143 and a weight of 495 g it's relatively small. The 92mm fan (PWM controlled) is specified at 6.7 - 55 cfm (7 - 31 dBA). It's build diagonal, tilted by about 30 degrees, so it will probably cool some pa...

If you're in for an Ati card within the 4670 spec range, why not consider a passive version? For instance: Sapphire sells Ultimate versions (which do have passive cooling) of the 3850, 3870 and 4670.

I run a Q9550 OC @3,4 Ghz, with a Sapphire Ultimate 3870 (in a Solo case with a Modu82+, two slow 92mm Scythe intake fans and 1 slow 120 mm Scythe outtake fan). I use the Scythe Mine CPU cooler, which is good enough to keep decent cpu temperatures. Without overclocking the cpu temperature is about 5...

My P5Q-E works just fine. Both Scythe input fans (SA0925DFB12L) are lowered from 1600 rpm to 800 rpm. The output fan (SFF21E) went down from 1200 to 800 too. Only the processor fan (SY1025SL12M) didn't slow down, cause the motherboard handles PWM fans only. So I bought a fanmate2 to slowdown this fa...

With most drives you can slow down the seek-speed, thus lowering the seeking noise by the acoustic management (fast vs silent).

Of course two fans running at 6V are more silent than 1 fan at 12V (pushing the same amound of air). Two fans are, well, twice as large as one fan, giving the effect of a 17 cm fan running at 6V. In fact you have to count the sound of the fans self doubled. This can be ignored however, as with good ...

I do use a Modu82+ 525W in my dead silent system,
with a (passive cooled) 3870 Sapphire graphics card and a Q9550 quad core clocked @ 3400 Ghz.
This PSU handles the power need easy, the fan hasn't been spin up from the default 490 rpm yet.
Highly recommended.

Possible, it is not described in the manual however.
Also it does not explain why the fan still runs full speed while getting only 9,5 V (it's a sharkoon 12V -> 9,5V mod cable)
