Hi all, just made an htpc / file server build and needed suggestions as to what I could do to make it quieter. Here's the CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103681 HTPC case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154087 Reason I included the case was bec...

I will have some 720p content on there and I was asking around and people told me 1gb ram will not be enough to play 720p x264 content. The CPU is powerful enough though I thought... The RAM is enough although 2GB is recommended if you can stretch your budget. Also, I love this case that you bought...

That doesn't look MicroATX to me. Motherboard's proprietary. It is, however, pretty small form factor. For the price, yes, you can build a small form factor MicroATX AMD for aound the same or less. Heck, Fry's had a pretty darn good sale on a Celeron E3200 Wolfdale+MSI G31 combo ($39.99 in-store, $...

Hey all, I'm building a very basic box that will be running debian (or windows xp, haven't decided yet) and a torrent client and an nzb client for downloading from usenet. Please tell me if the following hardware will be the best bang for buck: $134 - Micro ATX barebone system, comes with the intel ...

I got them from FrozenCPU.com. Things were extra expensive for me with the added shipping cost. Luckily they were bought when the NZD/USD were still good.

Re: My Proposed Silent PC Set-Up: Looking For Expert Opinion
Hello I have just registered on the forum, but I have been visiting the Silent PC Review site for a long time, reading the articles and tests. I am at the stage of buying the components for building my (hopefully) silent PC and would just like to check if all is well with my choices and expectation...

Is the chip burning hot at its default settings? Does the BIOS or third party utility allow you to lower the NB voltage? If it runs burning hot at even the lowest settings, then I think it must be the nature of the AMD 770 chipset plus Gigabyte's own design of this board. I remember also reading ne...

HELP! nb temps out of control for gigabyte ma770 mobo
Hey everyone, I just finished installing a new build and the temps for the northboard for this mobo are ~85*C with nothing resource intensive going on!! I googled and all fingers point to the stock nb heatsink that gigabyte has on these boards. Here's the board I have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...

For just 1 graphics card, 1 HDD, and nothing else extra, why go full-ATX? You could get a mini-p180 ( on sale for $80 ) and a matx gigaybte board , and save some space, weight, and cash. you know i was thinking about that actually! the problem is that i don't know if my graphics card will fit in a ...

The 940 passive with a Minja? Sounds unbelievable! Anyone got a link to that? Anyway, I am using a Xigmatek HDT-S1284EE ($40) on a Ph II 720. The base of the 1284EE is a perfect fit for the Phenom II heatspreader, so all four heatpipes (the difference to the HDT1283 reviewed by SPCR) make very good...

Scythe Mugen 2 is well worth of consideration. Its price is usually under 50$. That price range effectively limits the Noctua out of the picture. And Sunbeam core-contact freezer might be bit hard to find. If somone cooled 940 passively with Minja, then Ninja 2 is also worth of consideration. thank...

Depends... 1) Do you want a solution that could work passively as well? 2) Are you going to overclock your CPU by any chance? 3) Any budget limit? CPU coolers can be expensive too... 4) Willing to mod a product to achieve better performance? 1) well, currently on another pc i have an e8400 running ...

Assuming the same areal density, there's usually a small speed advantage in throughput -- reading/writing, esp. larger files. The biggest difference is in random access speed, which seems most relevant to typical desktop "handling" or feel -- it's usually ~12ms for 7200rpm and >15ms for 5400rpm. Th...
