Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

Anyway, if you ever find the time and courage to try and solve the 32 bits install problem, I would still greatly appreciate it. And I'm sure that it will help a few other people too :) Ok, I have put a new version (0.3) which seems to compile fine under 32 bits, But I haven't tested it yet. I'll d...

Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

I still have to set up an environment 32 bits on the dm1, and haven't been able to do that yet. Regarding the NB/GPU, I suspect the problem is that we really change the NB voltage, which leads to crashes, but we don't change the GPU voltage. The latter may have it's own registers and control; maybe ...

Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

Hi Doshu, Hello guys, I'm kinda noobish with CPU control on linux, and I need some help here. I found out what voltages are best for my E-350 running Brazostweaker under Windows, but I can't get Thierryg's Underclock program running to apply those settings in linux >_<. Fist of all, while following ...

Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

Vstehle, thanks for the C-50 test and patches; I'll integrate them. Ok, some things that may be of interest : I have seen a presentation by colleagues whose focus is compilation techniques for minimizing power use, and they did a short state of the art on power for current CPU tech (< 90nm). First, ...

Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

Well, Vid is specified in the same way for NbP0 / NbP1 and the cpu P-states in the AMD documentation, so it should be increase in Vid => decrease in voltage. I tested with lightsmark, and there is no increase in temperature, instead maybe a small decrease. But, and I found that this morning, the TDP...

Re: hp dm1z undervolting and (limited) fan control

Hi, that's me back again, with some info about undervolting the GPU part of the E-350, and a request for tests and help. So, it seems that the North Bridge is providing power to the GPU part, through two NBP-states: NbP0 and NbP1. In the same way as a CPU, NbP0 is the high performance mode, NbP1 the...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

Reno, you're welcome. I checked and your post is well done. One question: when you use rw-everything, do you change both CPUs or only one ? porkchop, I had too lockups last night and had to raise my p2 voltage a notch. It seems a good stress test is a lengthy compilation, such as compiling a large C...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

Adding a SSD is a step I'm considering too. And buying an external DVD drive; since the netbook trend started a few years ago, we're now running out of dvd drives in the house since the last three systems we bought came without any (including my wife's 13"3 notebook). The next step I've been thinkin...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

unfortunately battery life is just too hard to measure, with such a low powered system though every watt counts and i don't doubt that there will me an appreciable increase in battery life. Can we conclude that the E-350 undervolts well, and it can make the dm1z a fairly silent system  I have put the source for my C program for Linux at: http://sourceforge.net/p/undervolt/home/. Just give as parameters the Vid you want for the P-state, and it will be applied. sudo undervolt -p 0:...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

i figured that the addresses 0xC0010064/65/66 correspond to the p states 0-2, so what is the address 0xC0010071 for? 0xC0010071 contains a lot of information on the P-states. Of interest, its end (bits 15 to 0) list the values for the current P-state in the same way they are in the P-state register...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

for register 0xC0010064 the values will be something like: 80|00|..|..|..|00|28|10. You need to modify the '28' (increase the value to undervolt). Do note that these values are in hex, so you count 28, 29, 2a, ..., 2f, 30 (i.e. 28->30 is eight steps!) Wait, wait! Don't increase that 28 one by one, ...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

Have you tried the following method? Patching DSDT Table Personally, no. I tried a part of it (decompiling the dsdt, searching for a fan speed in it) without finding anything, but then I don't understand much of what is in a dsdt anyway. Now, given that, with undervolting and the "quiet" profile, I...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

Thoses ViD for P0 and P1 are impressive ! It must really lower the power usage and temperatures, to a point where you don't get much gain in power by going to a lower P-state. My lockups were true lockups, however. In the BIOS and Kernel guide for family 14h, there is no limit for ViD. A register al...

Re: hp dm1z w/amd fusion is a screamer!

Wow, nice! Could you please post how you did this? I'm interested but I have no idea how to proceed. Yes, the result is good so far. With the silent profile and undervolting, it seems the main noise under use is the hard drive. Undervolting is a bit technical, but not too complex. The E350 has hard...

Replying to myself again, but this may be of interest for others. I have a solution for activating coolsense with Linux. The acer_ec.pl script, available around the acer_acpi module effort, allows one to write into the EC registers. http://aceracpi.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/acer_ec/acer_ec.pl With it, switching on coolsense is simply this : sudo ./acer_ec.pl := 0x5...

Ok, i compiled a new dsdt, but I didn't manage to upload it, even after adding it to the initramfs. I'm sure there must be a way to write a script able to toggle those EC registers directly ! I spent some time looking throught the BIOS and Kernel developers guide for family 14h (Brazos) and apparent...

Hi, first post on SPCR for a try. I just tried to silence a similar setup (Antec 2480 with an Athlon 64X2 3800+ 89W TDP, onboard GPU and tuner card) and tried and found a few things you may find usefull. (and I didn't want to spend much money doing it) I left the two stock case fans on, but undervol...
