Re: Custom HTPC / gaming case

Hi, thanks for replying, and giving me some more things to consider. I've put a reply above to explain the general idea of the case a little better. I have a couple of questions about your reply too. and the Silverstone SX600-G as a potential PSU I'd suggest to avoid the larger Silverstone SFX PSUs:...

Re: Custom HTPC / gaming case

To clarify some of the reason for choosing certain items, I would like to fit the case onto a shelf in this unit: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6092689.htm The gap at the rear of the shelves is only 420mm wide, so I am trying to keep the case as close to this width as possible, so...

Custom HTPC / gaming case

I'm looking to build a new PC for HTPC/Music/Gaming purposes, and am thinking about making a custom case, with some ideas stolen from the Lian Li PC-O5, and possibly using one of their GPU riser cables, but having room for a full size optical drive. It will probably be wooden construction, though I ...

Re: SilverStone Raven RVZ02 Slim Tower

I'm interested in this kind of case, for a hybrid of HTPC, CD Ripping and Gaming*, but ideally I need to put it in the unit under my TV, with horizontal orientation. I have about 150mm hight available on each shelf (the bottom shelf being able to take a 400mmx400mm case). I'm just wondering if any o...

Re: New Windows 10 Intel APU system.

Thanks for the advice so far. I've been thinking a little more about the aims. Purpose wise, I'm thinking this may well also end up acting as a media pc, sitting by the TV (still to be bought - my current one, like my pc monitor, is still a CRT!) and being the way BBC iPlayer, 4OD, Youtube & DVD/Blu...

Re: New Windows 10 Intel APU system.

I got a little confused between C and R chips. I think it would end up being a Core-i5 5675C processor. As for resolution, my monitor is currently set to 1280x960, as it is a 4:3 CRT monitor. I suspect I will have to move away from that monitor at some point, probably towards a 1920x1080 monitor, so...

New Windows 10 Intel APU system.

I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade from this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&p=481693#p481693 Thinking Windows 10 and an Iris pro 6200 would be an interesting combo. How are these chips likely to compare to my current setup (AMD Athlon X2 5050e Socket AM2 45W Energy Ef...

86C , where the last was a contrived stress test in a poor airflow environment. RMA the card. The heatsink isn't seated properly. Wow, never realised it was doing that badly. Thanks for posting the reviews. One last test, if you want more play time: zip tie a spare case fan to the gfx card heatsink...

I put it in extreme mode and ran for quite a while. Managed to get the temperature up to 102 degrees centigrade. I didn't see a lot of artefacts though. All I noticed were odd parts of the screen, about 3 by 3 pixels in size seem to occasionally go black for half a second, then come back to the imag...

Furmark

I didn't have much time this morning, but ran furmark for a bit. Now managed to get the screen-shots uploaded. There weren't any artefacts running up to 99 degrees centigrade, but that seems pretty hot to me. The card did cool off reasonably once I stopped the rendering. May get to run it again toni...

Just read your sig. At the wall: 115W idle, 150W gaming (WoW), Prime95+Furmark 260W. I think I'll be downloading Furmark. I would be quite nice to get an at-the-wall power reading too - might investigate some appropriate hardware through plug power monitor at some point, but I think stability first....

It's always good to go from a qualitative statement to a quantitative statement when debugging these things. What does "tendency to overheat" mean? Is it a BSOD? Are there screen artifacts in 3d? Is it auto-rebooting? What are the measured temps? Is this a recent problem or one that you've been dea...

PC has been built a while, and performs brilliantly in most tasks.

However, in 3D it has a tendency to overheat. Any thoughts?

I hope to be able to put some pics of the new pc up soon, if that helps.

oops

Realised that I ordered a 120mm fan instead of a 92mm fan. Think I'll keep it to replace the tri-cool one on the back. Managed to also order the correct 92mm fan for the front. I could actually end up with rather a lot of spare fans - the case one, and a spare they put in (due to some manufacture is...

I checked, and realised that custompc is actually a magazine review, but the others are shops. Only Kustom and Specialtech have fans in stock, with specialtech being cheaper (both excluding and including vat & delivery). Overall, this will cost me an extra £5 over the Antec fan roughly. The Fan is ...

Re: AMD based major upgrade/silence

If not, cheap and quiet case/ PSU choices might be the Antec NSK3480 (w/380W PSU), or the Antec SOLO or maybe even a Three Hundred. I'll take a look at the case and let you know what I think. Having looked at the cases, I like the SOLO/Sonata Plus 550/Sonata Designer 500 best. I think the Designer ...

Check the brand name, model, and 12v rail amperage and wattage ratings. I'm going to randomly guess and say that 18-20A *might* be sufficient enough for the 4670-- others please chime in. Re: AMD based major upgrade/silence

A board based on AMD's 780G might fit the bill nicely, except no wireless. Most new Asus boards only allow for the control of PWM fans, which aren't that great anyways. Gigabyte supports 3/4 pin fans, so they might have better fan control. Thanks, it's a complete maze in motherboard - each manufact...

AMD based major upgrade/silence

I currectly have the PC shown in the images below. I would like to upgrade this and make it quieter at the same time. I intend to keep the same case (which has front USB, Firewire and audio sockets), drives (drive noise doesn't yet annoy me) and PSU (Mine is 350W, and quite quiet). My intention is t...
