Re: Corsair RM Series intro'd

Your outlet is properly grounded, right? And by "proper", I mean it's actually grounded and doesn't just have a socket for the ground pin. The PSU has been plugged into an ungrounded outlet, I just tried also a properly grounded outlet and turned ErP off - end result easily audible buzz and whine. ...

Re: Corsair RM Series intro'd

Got a 650W version a couple days ago. The unit seems to emit buzz or whine when the system is powered off, enabling ErP support in BIOS does seem to reduce the noise quite a bit though. Turning system power on cures the problem for a some reason. Not sure if there's variance between different RM PSU...

Re: WD Scorpio Black 750GB & Scorpio Blue 1TB

This is a bit disappointing, since I was planning to swap my WD Green+SQD to 1TB Scorpio Blue+dual SQDs.

I wonder if Samsung notebook drives offer fairly silent seeks and are free of that annoying platter calibration noise?

WD is a better choice for quiet computing. Samsung is relatively quiet only in idle mode. Both drives benefit from Scythe or similar HDD enclosure.

I was looking for compact atx case and this came up. What's the point of not having separate air intake for PSU? Would the intake really improve performance as the hot components are going to be located well above the psu?

My two 500Gb 7200RPM 2.5" drives were clearly audible beforehand, even when soft mounted, but are inaudible in that enclosure. For 1Tb of silent local storage that's cooler and quieter than a 3.5" drive, and a hell of a lot cheaper than SSDs. So do you think that 2x2.5" in SQD would be more silent ...

So would a Seagate LP 1TB be a worse choice than WD Green? Does a two platter 1TB WD Green even exist? I mainly care about idle&seek noise.

Do you have any experience with Thermalright HR-03 A heatsink? I think it would work OK in pseudo passive mode with 5750. Is there any alternatives for passive heatsinks?

The retail 4770s have max load draw of 90W(cheaper, less efficient design). Anyway the idle draw is huge improvement over previous generation.

Now just make it passive. You should be looking at 4850/4870 performance with this one.

So I would say it is not inaudible at idle. If anything, the idle noise is worse than the seek noise. I want to try putting the ecogreen in a scythe quiet drive. That will add a couple layers of metal to block the sound so I'm hoping for a big improvement... Yes, scythe box will improve idle noise ...

Would it be possible to fit this PSU inside NSK3480 without any modifications? I think the extra length would block the standard cable hole.

I'm not sure that how accurate extrahardware's noise measurements are, but I would stay away if Seagate LP really has 6.6dB noise delta between idle and seek. Samsung F2 has noisy seeks, so don't buy this drive if you are going to use it as system drive.

I have the F2 currently mounted with Nexus DoubleTwin on upper bay of NSK3480. I also had it inside Scythe box that was sitting on floor. I meant that the rattling in idle lasts maybe for one or two seconds. I have run almost every possible error check with this drive - no errors. It's about as disturbing as F2 seek noises, I might have to consider WD Green.

Yes, it's a 1.5TB F2. Your drive seems to have similar rattling sound, so maybe it's just a unique feature of F2 series.

My quick impressions: with case open and drive sitting on floor idle noise is easily audible. Noise character is pleasant and perceivable volume is a bit higher than Antec Tricool@5v. If you have very low noise fan(s), you'll want to take the last step. With drive placed into Scythe box, idle noise ...
