Re: AMD Kabini: Athlon 5350 Desktop SoC
on linux trusty tahr (14.04), asrock am1h-itx and 5150, the usb 3.0 ports(blue) do work. they aren't as fast as i have as other usb3.0 ports... but that might be the driver. Re: AMD Kabini: Athlon 5350 Desktop SoC
I was been intending to build a new WHS based on WHS2011 and was collecting parts (2x 2TB WD AV drives & Intel 180 GB SSD), when I saw th $99 kit on Newegg (http://promotions.newegg.com/amd/14-1701/index.html?icid=249125) based on the ASRock AM1B-ITX. I couldn't resist and got the package. The attra...

Re: Seasonic G360W gold for $60 - Review & Giveaway!
When I saw this supply selling on the egg for around $50, I bought one for my Windows Home Server. The server only draws 50w (kill-a-watt reading) and I run Lights Out, so the server is only awake when a client is awake, so the PS will probably never pay for itself. No matter, it's a well made quiet...

Re: power supply test at anandtech.com
I think this test is totally worthless. As i pointed out before to anandtech author, he deliberatly omitted the physical measurements of the tested psus. What is a test worth, when the author refuses to do his homework? What use does such a test have, when i have to look up by myself if this psu wo...

Re: Temps During No Load / Full Load, Good or Bad?
A couple of things: the Intel Burn Test loads the CPU much more than and application can, so the temps are worst case, and you had a loose heatsink. With the heat sink now properly seated, the only drawback to the stock heatsink is the noise. FWIW, the Intel cooler comes with a thick layer of therma...

Re: Are unlocked CPUs better for silent computing?
All the Intel CPUs, at least the ones I've had since Core2Duo, dynamically adjust multiplier, # cores and Vcc depending on load. My current build is based on an i5-3570k. at idle the the CPU runs at 1.6Ghz & 0.936Vcc. Under load it goes to 4.1Ghz & 1.15Vcc. (I always set my overclocks to only increa...

Re: NAS that can be woken up/put back to sleep?
I use Windows Home Server with the add-in Lights Out. Lights Out detects when a client is awake and wakes the server. In the middle of the night, when all the clients and the server are in standby Lights Out wakes the server, which wakes the clients for the nightly backup. Very reliable and power ef...

Re: Thinking of finally upgrading: LGA 1155 for about $1000
I bought the modular version of the Rosewill PS; I can't hear it. The fan barely has to spin to keep it cooled. Gold is good. I running an i5-3570 oc'd to 4.1 ghz with 16 gig of RAM an SSD & 5400 RPM 2TB HD. It draws 31w at idle and 100w from the wall running the OCCT standard test and the same runn...

I just, as in assembled/stated/went into BIOS, the LK version of this MB. It will control 4 or 3 pin case fans. No need for PWM. Right now I left the fan profiles at "Standard".

Re: Lian Li PC-7FN
A fan really doesn't "blow"/direct air inside a case; it creates a high pressure area in the case The air flows from a high pressure area to a low pressure area. To a certain extent, an exhaust fan is something like pulling a rope, which is easier than pushing it. A fan can be used to force more air...

I've built two very quiet systems using a A-05B and a Lancool K7 cases. I'm about to put together a Ivy Bridge system that's going into a PC-6 case. Re: Lian Li Lancool PC-K9B
That looks very much like an update of the PC-K7B that I've had for several years. The very short story is that the Lancool cases can be used for very quiet systems, but they need a bit of work to get there. The side panels tend to resonate depending on the included components. I have some 8 1/2 x 1...

Re: Should I be worried about OCCT detecting errors?
OCCT is running Linpack and if it's indicating errors then your computer isn't stable when running that program. It may never throw an error in normal usage, or it may. If all you're doing is playing games, then it may not be an issue. If any of the computers in my house (mine or my kids) can't run ...

Your old components are much less power efficient than the new ones, and even though the new system will be faster, it probably doesn't use any more power; possibly less.

Re: Seasonic X-400 Compatibility Issues?
So, the question is: do I have a bad unit and should try to swap it for another one, or is this a feature of the whole series? I doubt any one can answer, because it's a Ouija Board question. There are voltage timing specifications at power up for PS's and MB's. So if one or both of your components...

First you need to understand what a ground loop is so you can move on to fixing the actual source of the problem.

I believe they actually use the ever-lubricate bearing, but it's been lost in translation because it's based on the sleeve type. It's an oil impregnated sintered bronze sleeve bearing. The simplest, cheapest bearing type used for fans. Not a fluid, dynamic bearing, and certainly not a long life bea...

Re: fan replacement for my PSU?
In the US, Newegg is still selling the full S Flex line. The 1400 RPM, Kama Flow 2 is a reasonable alternative. Sleeve bearing fans like the Slip-Stream have no business being used in power supplies. The bearings tend to be short lived when used in a horizontal orientation, and there is much more wo...

Understood, I just like to have ripple as low as possible as I might use as a dedicated hifi computer. Low ripple is much less significant than is commonly thought .Almost nothing (fans and hard drives) use the power directly out of the PS. Any decent audio card will have filtering on the DC input....

Uh, the CPU core temps are no higher than 33ºC. That high temp is not for the CPU. The CPU is NOT overheating. Try putting your finger on the NB, and/or see if the HS on the NB is loose.

The interior panels (and the bottom and back) are not anodized.
They have to be treated to prevent oxidation; they are most probably clear anodized.

Re: 540 i3 Higher Than Expexted Idle Wattage HTPC Wrong PSU?
Are you sure Speed Step and EIST are enabled in the BIOS? If not, the CPU speed will never drop and the CPU voltage won't drop at idle. You can check the behavior with CPU-Z, which should show a CPU multiplier of 6 at idle and the voltage should change between idle and load. You won't see a 20w chan...
