Re: Zotac mini-ITX Z68 motherboard
Will a Prolimatech Samuel or Scythe Big Shuriken clear the Supreme's northbridge/VGA cooler? If so, the small fan could be ditched in favor of the airflow created by the CPU cooler's larger and presumably quieter one...

Re: Cooler Master Silencio 550 Quiet ATX Tower
It's weird you didn't give to this cheap and nice case a Golden Award. The only thing it needs to perform at least as good as the competitors is an extra fan, plus it is cheaper and looks refreshingly understated. Also, an integrated SD slot, damped panels and hot-swap cage are something rare at thi...

Re: Quietest ATI (r300-r700) video cards
The quietest cards are passively cooled. Just pick a card that has no fan among the ones supported by your driver and you'll be fine. If they're supported, and since you don't demand ANY gaming power, I'd get a HD2400 Pro or HD3450, just to use one of the latest architectures with better vide...

Re: Thermalright Silver Arrow Dual 14cm Fan Cooler
The Cogage Arrow is the same cooler without caps on the heatpipes' ends, but costs much less. It's a very good choice if one doesn't need (or want) the fans included in the Silver Arrow. It also comes with 3 pairs of clips to mount as many 120/140mm fans, and rubber strips to decouple them to the he...

Re: Soundscience Rockus 3D | 2.1 by Antec
50$ is a pretty poor budget to get any good sound. I think spending up to 150$ on some PC sets might not be a bad investment (for example, one could get a good 2.1 with optical input, which is a nice touch to overcome the awful, poppy and cracky integrated audio chip you can find in lesser motherboa...

Re: Reference PWM fan - 120mm
Because 2-300 RPMs is just too little for me, my pc is not based on an ultra-efficient i3/i5. At 600 RPM they're plainly inaudible, and when temps rise, 900 RPM are simply necessary. Plus, when you can get them, slightly used, for 8 euro each including delivery, it's hard to resist!

Re: Reference PWM fan - 120mm
I have two Noiseblocker Blacksilent Pro PL-PS. Setting them at 0% PWM rate, they dial down to roughly 600 RPM, and at just 1%, they quickly jump up to slightly less than 900, which might be just too much for the OP. They're fairly quiet in the entire range though (at 900 RPM, it sounds more or less ...

Huge mass + large fin spacing = designed for fanless use/extremely low airflow conditions, just like this enormous Silentmaxx.

That's what I call overkill! I'd still install everything inside that case, even with the side panels off. Placing the motherboard on its side will let the hot air go up, potentially improving your temperatures. BTW, any reason for you not to consider the de-facto standard for fanless comp...

Re: Lian Li PC-V354 MicroATX Mini Tower Case
Hideous case. Ugly as sin and with horrid proportions. All of the "nice touches" (thumbscrews everywhere, fan filters + rubber grommets on the same assembly) are wasted if you think a little about the way they implemented them. And what's the point with so many fan slots? Why not sealing up the top,...

The LED Nexus performs much worse than the regular one, that's a fact. I'm surprised by the Arctic fans. Not by their relatively poor performance, but for the high price they mentioned. Here, I got my PWM fans for 5 euros each. At that price, they're a steal, but not for twice as much. By the way, t...

Get the Seasonic, passive FTW. If you can find it for less, get the X-560. The Enermax is a good but overpriced unit, that's why you keep getting recommendations for the Seasonic.

They're good quality, just be sure to get one of the new E8 series as they're tuned for extreme silence rather than just being quiet like the old E7. Many wattages and fixed/modular cabling models to consider, I'd go for the 400w one with fixed cables as it's plenty power and still relatively cheap...

Well that makes sense.
Have you tried placing the sensor where it's colder, or even outside the case? If that didn't help, just short-circuit it and undervolt the fan.

Re: OOPS! 6850 -> 5850 and Power Supply/AMP concerns
You will be fine following any of your options, but if you can take it back and get the cash you're saving, I'd get the X-560. They are essentially the same power supply (the X-400 is so overspecced you might end up pulling 600W from it without a hiccup, just like the X-560), but the added cables an...

Congratulations on the meticulous soundproofing and vibration damping you figured out! But I don't understand the sheer amount of hard drives you're using. If you need capacity and storage, you should have ditched out at least one of the 3,5" and get some larger drives, a RAID5 with three 2 TB (or 1...

Love passively cooled rigs! And that Thermalright is a Godsend.
Are you still using the stock Tricool on the rear? Is the 4850 stable at high loads? I remember having troubles with the VRM temperatures on many games that led to blue screens.

They're much slower. A mobile HD5870 is based on the desktop HD5770. Also, CPUs run at slower frequencies and rely on Turbo Boost to get decent speed, so when everything heats up there's no boost at all and they're stuck at less than 2 GHz.MikeC wrote:I have no idea how they compare performance-wise.

Didn't do any gaming on that, just some programming. Scrolling was smooth as silk, that was enough to convince me. Also, a 120Hz refresh rate should mean a faster pixel response time, and that is alway good when gaming. Kind of makes up with the good old CRTs we used to have, the high-end ones had b...

Re: 120hz monitors and gaming
I once used a pc with a 120Hz monitor for a while. Getting back to my 60Hz one was frustrating and irritating. Get it, I think it's an upgrade just as dramatic as getting from a regular hard drive to a SSD.
