Re: Looking for quiet 40mm fans

Allright, I spoke with the manufacturer of the device I am going to use these fans for and apparently static pressure is of relevance for proper operation. Maybe this will help the search a little bit, though it too seems restricted to the numbers the manufacturer gives us. Does anyone have any empi...

Re: Looking for quiet 40mm fans

Someone must have looked at affordable 40mm fans before, right? yep we sure have, none ive seen are up to the task. the general consensus on SPCR is to use 80mm as a minimum size to achieve silence. ive used 80mm fans in cases less than 80mm thick, but i had to angle the fan at 45* to make it fit i...

Re: Looking for quiet 40mm fans

The Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX is probably the best seller in this category. Apart from the Scythe it might be worth considering the Gelid Silent 4 which has a top speed of 4200 rpm, slightly less than the Noctua. The latter seems to be available locally for a decent price. Three Gelids for one Noctua. Wh...

Looking for quiet 40mm fans

Let me start off with the obvious - 40mm fans are not optimal when it comes to sound or airflow. They are small and therefore noisy. I understand that the request for quiet fans of this size is a bit optimistic. However, in the specific situation I am dealing with, size is a major issue. Anything bi...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

The SSD I had in mind was something like a Kingston 120GB, fast and cheap but might not allow all your games to fit. Live cramped for a while or install some games on the HDD perhaps? Only until 256GB or larger SSDs becomes affordable, then the small 120GB can become system disk in some other syste...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

I agree, but I should also make sure I will not regret my purchase, as my budget has bounds. I like to get hardware that I know will be useful later on, even when the stuff is a bit out-dated. I care less about budget. An SSD as the fast drive might not be the cheapest solution, but a few years dow...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

I didn't see anyone else mention this, but you suggested the idea in your first post that you might want to do some kind of mirroring - DONT. Mirroring is only of any real use for mission critical servers, what you want is either an image of your boot drive and a reliable bit of backup software, or...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

I have been looking into these Red drives and I must say that they look attractive. They outperform the Greens pretty much with everything, while they are quiet as anything. So it looks like the second drive will be a Red; I will just have to configure Windows to spin it up only during backup sessio...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

Never looked into them my self, but have you considered a SSD hybrid drive ? Not sure how they handle loading games what with them caching frequently access data. I think those will be unsuitable for my purposes. They cache the most used files, but when requesting large and/or ever changing files t...

Re: Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

Have you considered the WD Red? It's like a green but with no head park feature and longer warranty. I wouldn't get a noisy WD Black unless you really need that extra performance (and even then I would consider a second or larger SSD instead of a spinning drive, depending on how much storage you ne...

I am very aware that internal backup - for various reasons - is far from perfect. For that very reason I have a WD20EARS in an external USB3 casing. Suggestions for an (asymetric) set of HDD's

Hi there. Because of a little boo boo with my current HDD I decided to go for a couple of new ones. The idea is to have a relatively fast one as a daily driver and primary storage, while a second, possibly slower HDD will be used for the all imporant backups. This is where I messed up before (someth...

This is unfortunately a common problem with the Sentry 2. They admit it on their forums. Please add your fans to their list so the scale of the problem becomes clear.

Re: System rebuild, big sinks: preparing for Bulldozer

There seems to be a problem with the NZXT Sentry 2. Combined with some fans it can create a rattling sound that is quite loud, which kind of defies the point. It's not happening with all fans though, so I'm not sure what to make of it. i seem to recall that the mugen2 comes with thermal paste? I alr...

Re: System rebuild, big sinks: preparing for Bulldozer

Thank you sir, for these excellent replies. You're already helping me a lot. You have no SLI/CFX (it's where the P18x really suffers IME), have no high power draw (so the PSU won't overheat), you have no tons of drives tightly packed: therefore I still continue to not see the need for more than 2 ca...

Re: System rebuild, big sinks: preparing for Bulldozer

They are far quieter: but do you really need 6 fans? Maybe I should have been more specific. I will order 6 fans, but at first I will replace the three TriCools currently present in my case (two out, one on the bottem). Then I want to: - Add one as an intake, I feel that would be a valuable additio...

Did anyone mention the Apple aluminium keyboard yet? Even though I'm not a big fan of Apples other hardware (too expensive, not flexible enought) the keyboard is something I like. System rebuild, big sinks: preparing for Bulldozer

Summer 2009, I built a system on the basis of a P4. Yes, that was and is quite an aging chip, but I could get it and some other components for free and didn't have a lot of money to spend at the time. The money I did spend, however, was spend on carefully selected components, so I could keep on usin...

When there is a guard the manufacturer is not responsible. But that doesn't account for cases where there are also fanguard...

I am wondering, what is the reason these fanguards are fitted to cases at all? They can even be found in cases that are built for silence, in places where fingers are not an issue (like SPCR's own P180), so why are they fitted/stamped? Maybe they play an important role in shielding the gear inside f...

Could someone maybe comfirm whether the little RAM sinks are sticking properly nowadays? I know there were problems with the sinks falling off in earlier shipments, but I guess they could and should have corrected this by now.

I really don't want to glue the sinks in place due to warranty issues.

I think you might be right. I asked the seller about this and although he hasn't run this particular PSU, he has some experience with a simular one.
