Re: Seeking input on planned router build
I'm quite happy with my Ubiquiti edgerouter lite for $99. I haven't tried installing clamav on it, but it's Debian based, so it should be possible once you enable the right repositories. It's a nice (fast) router, if you don't mind dropping to the CLI sometimes. It uses 6 watts or so. jhahn@ubnt:~$ ...

Re: Atheism and yoga
The Sedlocks who are suing the Encinitas school district are Christians who have some bizarre belief that Yoga meditation will corrupt the kids in the school. As an atheist I can't imagine any other atheists being bothered by Yoga (as opposed to what's clearly worse - having to pledge to our flag un...

Re: Piece chipped off hard drive PCB: RMA or not?
Most of the small capacitors are likely used for isolating power supplies for components. If a capacitor is missing then that component will be a bit more susceptible to errors when the board can't respond to sudden changes in power requirements. (Like on any clock pulse) There's also likely to be e...

Re: Removing glue SAFELY from a motherboard?
You can safely clean with isopropyl alchohol. Anhydrous isopropal is commonly used to clean non water soluble flux off of pc boards after soldering. You could use soap and water too, just make sure that you remove battery first and rinse when you're done with distilled water. Make sure that board is...

Re: HP MicroServer
If you just want to install a graphics card so you can add an extra monitor - and not for gaming type use there are some cards that you could use.
Matrox P690 Plus LP is 11 watts, fanless and is supposed to be able to drive two monitors

Re: HP MicroServer
The graphics card supposedly consumes very low power so this then means the server cannot handle a 3rd and 4th drive. An ATI HD5450 may be low power compared to other graphics cards but it still uses 150 watts at idle. I have my doubts that it really makes sense to use anything other than the built...

[quote="andyb"] Even then, the total votes for the Conservatives is 6 to 3, Looks like Obama and Co have a a lot of work to do swaying the mind of some of those 6 voters :D Hard to know from this, since we're still in the primaries. Not much point in voting for Obama, since he's probably the only on...

Currently there's a lot of hot air coming out our batch of Republican candidates. I think it will be tricky to silence them as some of them are on edge of being unstable already.

To be fair I should say "without anything that comes across as rational backing".You're propounding bizarre ideas without much in the way of rational backing. It's reasonable to assume that you're doing so out of ignorance.

Re: Please don't put another Moron in the White House
In Nazi Germany it was a racist kind of social Darwinism, and a horrible culling of 'substandard' people. It was spoken and overt. It's not really the same as the economic kind. The latter is present as a current of thought in most places, especially when you have laissez-faire, unregulated economi...

Re: Please don't put another Moron in the White House
Some bizarre ideas about evolution in this thread. Reachable, you could really benefit by reading a bit about biology. Also the connection between Darwinism and Social Darwinism is pretty tenuous - and I don't think there have been any (non fringe) proponents of Social Darwinism since the fall of Na...

Also it may not be completely silent. Just because there are no moving parts doesn't mean there won't be noise from vibrating inductors and such. Without any case they may be audible - and not a good kind of audible either.

I'd say you're being too cynical and not cynical enough. It won't be sabotaged because no-one in the industry is going to believe that there's anything to sabotage. It's most likely just one more energy for nothing scam. There are too many gullible investors willing to be ripped off over this kind o...

That is very sad. This has been a great site for many years. Much of the information that's been generated here, I don't think you could find anywhere else. Thanks for putting this together. I hope you find a buyer. In any case good luck and have fun with you next adventures!

Personally, I'd pick it off with my fingers (grounding myself first, to one extent or another, depending on the humidity), then I'd clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a cue-tip.

If you need to, you can clean it with isopropyl alcohol. It's often used for removing flux from pcb boards. Just be sure and use anhydrous.

It's not obvious to me whether temperature would change CPU efficiency - as long as the CPU is running at a constant voltage. If it were just a matter of the increased resistance, the power loss should go down as the temperature goes up (until the CPU stops working because appropriate gate voltage l...

Anyone attempt to modify a notebook power supply for use with this DC-DC, such as the Dell 90W adapters which can go for <$20? The newer Dell AC-DC bricks appear to be very efficient, but there is also an extra "data" pin which I am not sure if it can be ignored. There isnt exactly that much data a...
