Re: Our Lapped CPU Heatsink Test Platform
Apart from that, I wonder if it might be an idea to polish the IHS and the base of the cooler against each other with a rubbing compound, after the initial lapping with sandpaper? Are you thinking of the way telescope makers grind their mirrors? If it works for them, why not cpu's/heatsinks? Intere...

Re: Our Lapped CPU Heatsink Test Platform
And alignment really matters. Actually, check out this review for a better explanation. The bit about the IHS and pictures that show it are from "Looking for an Explanation" and afterward. Thanks for this! I only had time to glimpse at the alignment pictures and conclusion, but the observations see...

Re: Our Lapped CPU Heatsink Test Platform
I described what I see in my OHS as a sag because the rim is raised, and the center is elevated compared with the surface between the center and the rim. Think lunar crater with a flattened mountain in the middle. And alignment really matters. Actually, check out this review for a better explanation...

Re: Our Lapped CPU Heatsink Test Platform
I have known about the IHS sag in my own i7 860 for years. I began to see the imprint of the IHS rim on the contact surface of every heatsink I tested. Since the heatsinks are copper under the nickle plating, they are fairly soft, so imprints always showed up. BTW--that is one way of detecting IHS s...

Re: Silverstone Fortress FT-03 and Raven 3
Heh. It's a compact thing, more a Fortrette than a Fortress.
As for the Raven 3 - quite creative, putting the psu up front and stashing the HD's behind the mb. Great concepts. But the bling . . .

Agree. Certainly wrong. Many fans click on Molex. Heck, I had fans clicking when I was using a wall brick as a power source. I read somewhere that it is the circuitry in the fan that clicks, and that if the manufacturer sets the switching at a high enough frequency we never hear it. Maybe true, mayb...

Fabulous review! Exactly what I wanted. I would have liked to see a Scythe Kaze Maru or Kaze Maru 2 tested as the middle fan. Like the Noctua, they have 120mm standard fan mounting holes. I have a P14 and three Kaze Marus - 500, 1200 and 1900. I am highly impressed with the KM's. When downvolted the...

At 440mm tall, this 17.3-inch case will fit under my shelf. That makes it a definite possible. At 207.40mm (I'll bet the paint varies more than 0.4mm) it is wider than the 200mm NZXT Beta Evo I am working on now. This should leave lots of room for both the bitumen and cable management. The side-moun...

I have an Antec NSK 4480 II. It's nice enough. I put some inexpensive sound insulation on the main door, and it did reduce the noise a bit. The main thing is to get a quiet heatsink - or at least one you can't hear through the side grill. Don't put a fan in the front: it will vibrate the case withou...

Damping
Any stickies or articles on damping materials? I recently visited a high end music/electronics store and found something called "Quiet Zone," by Ixos, a self-sticking layer of heavy material designed to dampen vibrations. I've found some links on the net regarding damping materials, but nothing here...
