Re: Low power causing problems booting?
iirc ive used a spare LED across the contacts to see that the pc was beeping on startup Interesting idea! I don't like beeps but a little light would be nice. I would want to know what the typical speaker impedance and output voltage swing was to make sure the LED doesn't draw too much current? OP:...

Re: Advice for a compact, quiet, cheap, low-power home serve
I actually record and transcode several hours of 1080i OTA television each day with a D945GSEJT, and it handles the job just fine! It's in an APEX MI-008 with a 5V 120mm fan (because I get uncomfortable with 24/7 operation > 70C). Unless you have some pretty wild network traffic, I don't think you w...

Re: Will it work -- AM3 CPU on AM2 board (690G)?
AM3+ will lack DDR2 memory controllers (unless AMD changed their minds midway through development), and so will definitely* not work in AM2 motherboards. My guess is an AM3 chip will work fine, but you might have to flash an updated BIOS. Here is a question for you: If the answer is "no, it will not...

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
As to the power button - they can't have had that many complaints about it, or they'd have fixed it, right? I mean, the one on my 5-year-old Solo is still going strong, and I used that for 2 years as my main case and now as a server case. Maybe just need to learn not to jab the button so hard :D Mo...

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
I switched back to a PS2 keyboard specifically for the power button support. I wouldn't want USB power button support, anyway, as that means the 5V lines on the USB would remain active even when in S5. You can get some pretty neat buttons and switches, but something like this would be sweet: http://...

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
Perhaps we are being a bit too negative. It appears the vast majority are disappointed, but I think if this did not have the SOLO name on it we might be at least mentioning all of the nice things that the SOLO introduced. This case is definitely not to the SOLO what the SOLO was to earlier offerings...

Seasonic X-560 is $125, which I know is a bit over budget. X-650 goes on sale for about this price, too.
You could go the cheap route and buy this

and just cut (and tape off) the cables you don't need.

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
It appears there are only 3.5" bay provisions for suspending 2 drives (down from 3).
And does that space for cables look really shallow to anyone else? I would worry about cables being pressed between the frame and the panel, transferring vibrations. Might just be the photos, though?

Re: Windows 7 Installation tracking & RAM
Could you just come up with OS restore points? Obviously this does not work if you need to install A, then install B, then remove A whilst keeping B. What's wrong with installing an OS in a VM? Is this for dev purposes, or just installing 3rd party applications (home use?)? A registry changelog is a...

Re: Advice on Antec Fusion High-End build
Ah, sorry about the video card mix-up. I still think the included PSU will be fine in terms of power output (5570 maxes out at 39W according to google search). Even if we called it 100, and the processor 100 (neither of which will ever happen), that's 150W of headroom, which is plenty unless he will...

You didn't mention an OS. AFAIK, if you are going to use GNU/Linux, an nVidia card is the only way to go for a proper hardware interface. AFAIK, nVidia is the only way to even get a working vsync in Linux. Not sure about windows on that point. Oh, and Intel graphics have _awful_ linux support. Per a...

It would be beneficial to have the exhaust vent a little bit higher up. 1mm steel would be sweet, good luck. I'm guessing he was trying to line the exhaust up with the CPU cooler. The extra space at the top appears entirely devoted to cable management, so even if it was a hot spot it probably would...

Gigabyte did used to have undervolting features. Maybe they only put it on their fancy boards? Or certain boards meant to have low power features? I have a Gigabyte LGA 775 board, and had a few Socket A and Socket 939 boards, and they all only allowed voltage increases (not decreases). Was a bit fr...

TDP != instantaneous peak... though no one (manufacturers) seems to want to define TDP at all. And peak sustained obviously would matter (for thermals, power supply)! Depending on why you are building the machine, "winging it" with an aftermarket under clock/volt might be a risky venture. Edit: I do...

Just a brief update on this in case anyone stumbles upon this thread:
I ended up not buying the SMK-LINK keyboard (microcenter link).
Newegg stocks it and the reviews are not inspiring:

The sempron 140 is the same die as an Athlon II (245 I believe), but with one core disabled. So anything you could do (in terms of cooling) with the dual core version can be done more easily with it :) I actually unlocked the second core on the one I bought, and it seemed perfectly stable, but I dis...

Sempron 140 or 145 are a single core version of the Athlon X2. The 140 is specified as 45W TDP, but with a good motherboard & bios it can be undervolted to ridiculous extents. I have one with an ASUS board (generally good undervolt options) I picked up for ~$95 US, and it works great for my MythTV f...

One thing to watch out for with the Accelero S1 is that (I believe) it becomes 3-slot if you mount a 25mm fan under it. Can anyone confirm this?
