What picoPSU for fileserver / CCTV PC
Hi, I am looking to have a quiet PC to act as a home server / CCTV machine running WHS. I planned a 500 GB HD for OS and 2x2TB 5400 (Samsung green F4s) with 2x2GB ram. I have 2 PCI video capture cards, specifically Picolo Pro2 The machine is intended to be dual use. The CCTV requirements are related...

Re: Basic question re Motherboard power connectors
frenchie wrote The Molex connectors have nothing to do with the CPU or the motherboard connectors. Molex connectors are used to connect older CD/DVD players, older HDs (all that before SATA), some fans have a molex connector... With a recent computer, you probably won't use them if you have Sata com...

Re: Basic question re Motherboard power connectors
My main PC is also powered by an X650, I really like the way that the fan hardly ever kicks in. I'm considering something to accommodate a 4 input capture card (Picolo 2 pro) for a unit to mainly carry out a CCTV function / file server. Its always going to be on, hence my interest in a high efficien...

Basic question re Motherboard power connectors
Hi, This is a really basic question, but I was after some clarification of motherboard power supply connectors. I am interested in this MB: Asus P8H67-M LX Rev3 . It has a 24 pin and an 8 pin connector. I am after a H67 SB MB with a PCI socket (to accommodate a video capture card). I have in the pas...

Small PC for CCTV videocapture - what spec should I consider
Hi all, I have a project underway to build a box for a tawny owl which is approx 200ft from my house. Near the site is a shed. I had planned running ethernet to the shed and attaching the cameras via some sort of video server box suxh as this: Network video server However, I go thinking that I could...

Re: Advice on a new system
Just a thought, but am I right in thinking that you can't overclock a K series chip on a H67 board? You would need a P67 (as you previously selected) or don't bother with a K series chip if you don't want to over clock go with the fractal case, I have my pc in one and it's quiet. You mentioned that ...

Re: Help plan a NAS with aspirations...
I am in a similar boat, although I think my requirements are lighter than yours. I haven't put everything together, but I did choose to go with a "server" class motherboard from Supermicro, because it supports KVM remoting... Thats interesting. I had assumed I would remote desktop in from any netwo...

Re: Help plan a NAS with aspirations...
Thanks for the comments, I like NASpirations enough for a possible machine name... After some consideration, I didnt realise that the whole virtual OS running via thin clients was going to be a headache  , I kind of thought that if my local library can do it.... anyway that's more of a possibi...

Re: how to move to ssd
I think changing to AHCI in bios then re-installing on the SSD is probably the way to go.
If I get any probs (can see why), is it just as straightforward to change back to IDE and replace the other HD?

Re: how to move to ssd
if I change to AHCI, does that just affect the OS drive, (I understand that its helpful in getting Trim to work under win7), without affecting what's on the other drives?

how to move to ssd
Hi, I am considering swopping out my 1TB samsung OS drive (HD103SJ) for a SSD. While doing so, I plan a little house-keeping also. 1) Move from IDE mode to AHCI 2) Replace 1TB OS drive for SSD 3) Keep existing 500gb samsung (HD502HI) and 2tb samsung F4 (HD204UI) as storage (photos, music & DVDs) oth...

Re: Lounge HTPC build advice spec needed please
In terms if processing needs I had considered getting a dual digital tuner (in the uk we no longer have an analogue signal) as I ubderstand it, the tv capture card does most of the work when t comes to recording tv and converting it into some sort of storable format, rather than the host PC's CPU. A...

Re: Please comment on my system
I was going for the understated 'monolith' look. I tend not to get too wrked up about the tiny details (life really is too short anyway). I read a load of reports about picky problems with the fractal case, but I have no problem, apart from having to look under my desk to check if the PC is turned o...

Re: Please comment on my system
You were wondering about some reports of the fractal r3 case having an odd smell. I built a nearly silent pc based around a i5-750, Which never gets warmer than 45C. The case looks very slick and dosent have any unpleasant odour. You should also be able to suspend HD in this case if you remove a cou...

Mikae1, I've not long completed a build very similar to yours, only I used Noctua fans and a 5750 Vapor-X. I havent tried stress testing it yet, but it happily idles along at 27 degC with the exit fan only on at 700 rpm where I can barely hear it (have to check the light on the top of the Fractal bo...

I could not see any fan options in easytune 6 (which always produces a driver error on boot and does not inspire confidence!). It could be that I have not set to fans control type correctly thru the bios settings though? At least with speedfan I could turn them up or down. I like the idea of having ...

Keeping fans in check... how?
Hello, I have recently completed a new build, and all is going well, but I am gaving some difficulty setting fan speeds. My mobo is a gigabyte P55-ud3. I have 2x noctua NF-s12b on rear & front intakes (1on each), and a noctua NF-p12 on a prolima megahelms (I5 750) case is a fractal R2 with a vapor-X...

Is VaporX HD5770 overkill ?
Hi, As a GPU choice, I am looking at the following two cards: Sapphire HD5770 VAPOR-X £208 Sapphire HD5750 VAPOR-X £129 Now I realise that the 5770 is the better card, but I 'm not sure which would fit my needs. I aim to be using a 24" monitor, probably a LG Flatron W2442PA (just as soon as I can ...

Overclocking, noise and warranties
I was looking at building a system based on the i5 750, and was planning to overclock it as I understand that this CPU is well suited for this purpose. ces: Regarding the Scythe 1200rpm fan, did you mean tha this could be used as an alternative to the Noctua P12 for a CPU fan, or did you mean as a case fan? Who would have thought fans could be so complicated  ? I guess I sinply would like some advice about which fans to get. The fractal f2 comes with 1x front intake fan and1x exhaust fan at the back. There are options to open up additional fan mounts on the top (vertical x2), the back and side. Less Noctua FLX or more ULN case fans ?
I have a question about the relative merits of using high speed versus low speed case fans. I am planning the following build: i5 750, Prolimatech Megahalems, Seasonic X-650 with a VaporX HD 5750 GPU in a Fractal R2 case. The following review suggets that this case benefits form opeing up additional...
