Re: Skylake NUC or Intel NUC D54250WYK2 or? ...for HTPC
I had the i3 Haswell and Broadwell NUC. The Broadwell one is much less noisy for the typical use, and it can be made next to dead silent by setting 0% PWM rate until it reaches 70C, which under normal use (web browsing, Kodi, compiling some stuff in Eclipse etc) pretty much never does - so all you c...

My biggest issue with M9T ? Random beeping. Yes beeping. Not platter noise, not spindown/spinup noise. Serious beeping, it simply makes beeping noises. And i am not alone : http://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/2kfx9r/samsung_m9t_2tb_notebook_hard_drive_intermittent/ (PS: and it is not a fail...

Re: Any insight on Redux fans compared to the brown lineup ?
To be simple enough, redux fans are technologically mostly previous gen Noctua fans, with grey color instead of brown, and with just the fan & screws in the kit. No noticeable noise difference.

I have Ubuntu & Plex on it. Results at Anandtech of various playback tests were promising, so i pulled the plug and so far it is doing fine.

FYI it is CI320, not C1320 :D. My personal experiences : 1) i hate the guy who invented the bottom rubber screws, they were next to impossible to remove. 2) installing the WiFi mPCIe was painful, the antenna cable closer to the side was hard to "plug". 3) i have yet to manage to get CIR working. 4) ...

Re: Samsung M9T 2TB (2.5-inch) & Seagate SSHD 2TB
I personally found the M9T 2TB very loud when it was not in standby mode, but then it was the only item producing noise in the whole house (300RPM Noctuas make no noise, 980 Strix makes no noise in idle either...). shocking that a 7200 rpm drive would be louder than 2 components that basically make...

Re: Could use a sanity check of my Haswell-E builld
Hmm that is a very good point. It would be problematic to lose the first PCIe x16 slot. According to the Asus X99-A manual, the 4th x16 slot cannot be used along with an M.2. SSD and the 3th slot only supports x8 devices, and the 2nd slot shares bandwidth with some usb connectors and a pci-e x1 slo...

Why not NH-D15, especially due their exceptionaly good compatibility with tall heatspreaders ? 4) Whats the minimum % that asus allows on bios on CHA_FAN and on CPU_FAN? On sandy/ivy it allowed 20% on CPU and 40% on chassis, on haswell (none e) it bump the restrictions to 40% and 60%. Just for information, this is a PWM fan connected to a chasis fan connector near the outtake fan, configured...

For example, Asus apparently (personally i dont believe it out of so many lies from them), they made all their headers able to do 3pin and 4pin kinda like they have done with CPU_FAN, that you can decided on the bios if its 3pin voltage controlled or 4pin PWM controlled.... weather it true or not, ...

Re: 2.87gb RAM usable out of 4gb? help please.
You won't get 3GB. 2.87GB is the maximum you can get, because total address space of your PC is 4GB, and your hardware devices need 1.13GB of that address space. As it was said, your best bet to reuse that CPU, while having 4GB or more RAM is to get a board with P35/P45/G41/G45/Q45 chipset. That mea...

Re: 2.87gb RAM usable out of 4gb? help please.
As it was said, it's the chipset. i945 has a 32-bit memory controller, so while the rest of the system could run well with 64-bit stuff (software, drivers etc), it simply has no hardware to address more than 4GB of memory. And because you got hardware which also needs address space, the usable space...

I've just compiled the nct6775 driver, but loading it (modprobe) I get a 'no such device' error. Damn. Ok, one more thing to try just out of top of my hat - try loading asus_atk0110 module. But the fact that nct6775 is not working for you is weird, because as you can see on the image it uses nuvoto...

Re: Asus H87I-PLUS hardware monitoring/fan control, under Li
Try to load the nct6775 module and then run sensors. If it shows values, you are having a recent enough version of nct6775, if not, then : https://github.com/groeck/nct6775 Of course then you can then use the good old pwmconfig & fancontrol to control the fans. Personally i found many of ASUS & ASRo...

Re: Best case for silent NAS / backup server.
I have a 14-drive system in Nanoxia DS1 (+1 SSD). Case itself is good, fans are relatively quiet, but the biggest noise maker will be the drives. With RED and Green drives it could be heard in a silent room or at night, but i could sleep in same room, so it wasn't bad. The only real alternative i se...

As most of you know, Backblaze released a HD reliability report based on their experience with thousands of Hitachi, Seagate and WD drives.
