What's yer budget? Lynnfield (e.g. an i5-750) is going to be the best performance/heat ratio. Of course, you'll want an aftermarket cooler, as the stock Intel coolers suck for both cooling and acoustics.

I've never heard of one. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, even if you could find a ball-mouse these days, they all have optical sensors inside. There simply isn't any other mechanism that's used. So, the answer is "no". But you're not having a reaction to your mouse. If you were, then yo...

There are actually passively cooled HD5750 cards by PowerColor and Gigabyte. I have the PowerColor Go Green card which is a passively cooled 5750 and I have no complaints.

It works! I'm sitting here listening to my headphones making no noise whatsoever, which is what they're supposed to be doing when my computer isn't playing any sound. :-) And they still make the noises when asked to do so, just not at other irrelevant times like when I move my mouse or use my hard d...

Just got the replacement module from Antec today. We'll see how it goes when I get home. Support was pretty responsive, and the module appears at least slightly different from the old one (the USB connector is two separate 5 pin plugs instead of one 10-pin plug). But as they say, the proof of the pu...

A tower CPU cooler will overhang the RAM slots on many microATX motherboards. Usually isn't an issue unless you have RAM with tall heat-sinks. I've got a thread about it here.

Alright, it was a pretty challenging subject. Black on black in low light in a cramped space with a cell-phone camera, but hopefully this illustrates the problem. As you can see, the rail doesn't even fit right even when not attached to a drive: http://www.phong.org/misc/computer/drive-rails/rail.jp...

I looked at the rails when I got home. There are different screw holes that let you change the depth at which the drive is mounted, but no way to change the length of the rail.

Do you mean the different screw-holes? That's not the issue, as they don't quite fit with or without a drive attached. Do you mean the metal clip portion adjustable relative to the plastic portion of the rail? I'll take another look when I get home.

I have a Mini P180 and I'm using the stock mounting mechanism for my drives. Some vibration is transferred to the cage, but it's not excessive. I just transported the Seagate 1 TB drive from my previous computer; it wasn't originally purchased as a particularly quiet drive. It's about as loud as my ...

If you have it mounted too firmly (the silicone pads give a lot of leeway) then the effectiveness of the rubber doo-dads is reduced. You don't want it loose enough to be wobbly, but you don't want the pads to be significantly compressed. But I don't think suspension mounting necessarily implies inse...

I think that you're right the powercolor wouldn't fit, even if you got one with a straight heat-sink. :-) I'll be happy to post to pictures for you though, I'll send you a PM. Between the increased number of pins, and the flappy metal cover thing, they're tricker than they used to be back in the day. I didn't feel as comfortable as I did with the old ZIF sockets with the pins on the processor package. But it's obviously keyed, and if you've installed a processor and you'r...

Yeah, it's on there good and tight. It's sounds like a siren or a whistle, so I'm guessing it is some kind of resonance or harmonica effect.

Trust me when I say I'm being picky. The fans are really very quiet.

Actually, the heat-sink's bracket (CM Hyper 212+) has little rubber pads already. I'm like 30-40 under TJ max under load right now, so I guess I can turn these babies down a bit further still. The room is air-conditioned (more or less a necessity in Florida just to keep the mold at bay), so I guess ...

I fixed it! I had the case apart to fiddle with my fans so I decided to give it another shot. I pulled the module out of the front bezel and cut it open with a Dremel. I took the fans out of the case, and they were indistinguishable from one another. They even spun down exactly the same when I turned off the power. It was like two synchronized swimmers. Almost like creepy twins. And they took forever to spin down - the bearings must be very well balanced. Near as ...
