Depends on your OS... I use Speedfan on my Windows laptop to monitor the CPU temp because my internal cooling fan failed. On my desktop, I'm running Ubuntu (Linux), so I use something called sensors-applet, which just shows my temps in a notification area on my lower taskbar...I like it because it a...

I've gotta say, everyone here makes a lot of good points... We do live in a "disposable society" (at least in the Western world), quiet computers are far more prevalent than previously, and laptops are taking over. Someone also made a good point that most questions that need to be answered have been...

This I never knew... I've often wondered about it, so thanks for the tidbit.

Merlyn: Yeah, it is pretty awful... I was considering a WD Caviar, as I've got the room to isolate it, but I haven't decided yet. I'm still debating whether to get two smaller capacity hard-drives, or one larger one... I'd prefer separate hard drives, as I can use one just for my music, and the othe...

Actually now (as compared to in Edison's day) it is reasonably easy to convert DC to DC. There are DC to DC power supplies (like the PicoPSU for computers), and various circuits/ICs/etc. that do the job. Haha, maybe I just haven't looked hard enough. I hadn't thought about the PicoPSU, but that has...

SCDR: That was an interesting read... thanks for the suggestion. It answered my thoughts about converting from 120VDC to 12VDC... I didn't realize it was so complex. I'm trying to find ways to convert the voltage in my car from 12VDC to lower voltages (to run certain components), but the "converters...

Erelyes: Haven't listened to the clips yet, but I know what you're referring to... and I agree, putting a glass-pack muffler on your car because you want it to sound loud doesn't mean it'll sound good. I had a Magnaflow on a '91 Explorer for a while, and that was actually a lot quieter than I'd anti...

...The only downside is... What on earth is the upside of what you propose? I can't see anything positive in it. Ah, my mistake... I suppose it's more a figure of speech than pros and cons. You had previously mentioned that to get the same amount of power from a 12V system, the cables would need a ...

Wow, that's a great looking build... I'm seriously tempted to abandon my build and switch over to a similar case, although the cost of a new case is making me rethink that. I'm curious too, how's the sound on it? And as for sharp edges on fan openings: I had the same thing, and until I took my case ...

Quiet Rack-Mount Audio PC

Alright, so this is only my fourth post here, but I thought I'd share what I'm currently running. I started work on this PC towards the beginning of the year, and it's come a long way since then. I was using a Toshiba laptop for a while as an all-around computer, but I mostly used it for the interne...

This is an interesting idea... you could look at it from the other side though: instead of converting 120VAC to 12VDC, why not keep it closer to 120VDC? That way you wouldn't have to reduce the current to get the same amount of power. The only downside is, you'd have to use hefty components to be ab...

Mouse and keyboard definately, although I'm considering switching to smaller keyboard... I'm used to a ~90% laptop keyboard, so a full size is a bit awkward. A silicon one might be quieter and smaller. From the actual computer (~5' away), mostly HDD noise, with a bit of air turbulence and some hum t...

I won't bore you with details, but I've had a fascination with audio equipment for about ten years, and I've "collected" a few pieces since then. In the beginning, I went for big and loud... more power and more drivers equals better sound, right? Then, about a year ago, I realized that wasn't the ca...
