Re: Troublesome mini-ITX

Hi. NP. I would have liked the extra 15mm because roughly that's how much the Scythe Fuma was overextending into the bottom case panel. I'm not sure, but I might have tried to assemble the case without the bottom panel to try to figure out the total overextension. In the end, I got everything to fit...

Hi, Just another very long-time member who almost forgot about the site except for a PM I got.... So yeah, most of the old articles are historic, but also a good way to learn. Some even have value today, as while the mid/high-end cases have good anti-vibration pads, you can still see the occasional ...

Re: Current forum posts not appearing on Home page

I've looked at the quick link only three times so far, and it completely cleared itself on second view, after I made a post, (or a set time after viewing, I don't know) whereas the one I used previously displayed a fixed list of posts made in the last 48 hours, plus it also included the first few li...

+1 for this, I always used https://www.silentpcreview.com/aggregator/sources/15 to quickly check new forum posts, and thought the forums were dead for the last few months. I used that page because it also showed the first few lines of the posts, so it was much easier to decide whether I was interest...

Re: There is no such thing as silent PC

Yeah, unless you have a new 3xxxx series Ryzen 2, you can have the CPU up to 70-80 without any worry or performance loss. The Ryzen 2 is the first CPU architecture that throttles max turbo at ~75-80°C IIRC. The 1080 has an anemic 2-fan cooler. You can try modding it with a more capable aftermarket a...

Re: KEYBOARD thats quiet and doesnt suck for games?

Are moder mechanical keyboards quiet? Depends on how quiet you mean. I tried a cherry red, and even with rubber o-rings, they are pretty audible outside the room if you bottom them out. If you live in a quiet enough place. Not "wake up someone from a deep sleep", unless you are frantic in bashing t...

Re: Gonna buy a 3900x which is the MOST silent fan for it?

Yeah, I have one. I went with a giant custom loop cooler, but it's quite a hothead even with that, unless you crank up the pump and/or the fan speed, which means it's no longer silent. My main problem is that even with mundane usage, like web browsing, it will spike into the same temperature as with...

Re: Any update on recent silent cases and their quality?

I got a be quiet silent base 801 for my new rig. It's an interesting idea, but not the best executed. In the past, I had problems with my Fractal Design Define R4, the worse being way too restricted airflow by the front grille. That seems to be fixed for the R5/6. And my 304 case had partially paint...

Re: Help configuring my system

I'm surprised the PSU ever turns on given your configuration..unless there's some overclocking/overvolting going on? These semi-passive PSUs have a minor problem when their fans are facing downwards: the heat accumulates in them and triggers the fan spin, at least according to my experience with a ...

Hi, I still use an old, first-gen P180 for a NAS, and used it for maybe 5-12 years before as my main PC. (SSD+HD moving to bottom chamber) Would it be worth putting a quiet fan in there to keep air moving? I never met with the Noiseblocker brand, (the fan looks like a cross between Nanoxia and Be Qu...

No Kodi is generally fine, I haven't seen any stutter or framerate dips. On the other hand I don't have any 4k vp9 videos that I play on kodi, most of it is still x264. This video seems to stutter really bad, and its only 1080p @ 24 so there must be something else going on https://www.youtube.com/w...

Re: Pc Specification for Gaming

I'll have to agree with Olle on the price point. While the mining craze has subsided, the lack of competition keeps high-end gaming costs up. I'd also advise against any SLI system, as they are more problem than their worth in gaming. Still, the budget is greatly dependent on your target games: CS:G...

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.

There is also the problem of both nvidia and AMD GPUs not going fully to idle clock speeds (and thus presenting additional power drain) if you use more than one display. I don't think I ever saw an idle test that took this into account. I have a 100W+ idle, with an overclocked 4790k, GTX1080 with a ...

Re: Adding More Controlable Fan Headers

I have the phantek PWM -> DC converter... it's good, IF you have about ~4-7 fans on it. The problem is that the range of the controlled fans depends on the load on the hub. Someone tested it, and basically you'll need 4-6 fans to have roughly 5-12V range. More and you won't have 12V top (12 fans: 3V...

Re: VRM phases: voodoo?

Here's the thing: VRMs are not created equal. There are high-end ones that even if you have a dozen of them, will have smaller losses in total than the cheap-o solutions that some low-end and even medium quality boards sport. Yes, if two boards would use the exact same components and differ only in ...

Re: Silent PC Part Recommendations (Mid-2018)

I'd add the following: 1. If you want a higher powered card, and have the necessary skills for it, go with an aftermarket aircooler like the Morpheus 2 or the Accelero Xtreme IV. My GTX1080 is a magnitude quieter on full now than it was on idle with the factory FE blower. I usually don't notice it w...

Another thing to consider is the characteristic of the noise. The Core P3 might be a tiny bit quieter, but if that's from the most annoying frequencies, like a pulsating coil whine, I'd take a more subdued, slightly higher dBA any time. Open cases tend to lead to systems that have a higher high-freq...

OK, just re-did the GPU and now it's ~67°C with ~1400-1500rpm stable under furmark, with OC. IIRC I used the paste that was pre-applied to the cooler, maybe that was the problem, maybe something else. I also removed the extra heatsinks that might have collided with the cooler and thus borking the h...

Furmark temps: With OC, (+75%core, 120% power target, +90 core clock, +400 memory clock) ~1700 rpm will keep it at or under 71°C. Without, it's stabilizing at 1500-1600 and 69-70°C. That does sound a touch high in temps and fan speed, though of course Furmark is the great VRM killer to it isn't out...

I had some manufacturing and vibration problems with the Node 304, so while it would be great for an out-of-sight-and-hearing NAS, I'd not use it anywhere close if the place is really low noise-floor (~13dBA) otherwise. If you are in a busy office, it's another thing. Right now I have an old PSU sit...
