Core 2 Duo, GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R and cooling

I'm going with probably a E6750 and a GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R. I'm looking to get a heatsink I can use a 120mm fan on @ 5V. This board will be mounted vertically so I don't know if weight would be an issue on the bigger heatsinks.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Any where I can order from to make sure I geta 2.0 version board? It seems newegg is shipping them, but knowing my luck, I'll get the last non-2.0 version. :)

Where to get quiet fans!?

I'm having trouble finding a lot of quiet fans... the ones on the recommended list are fairly rare. Any suggestions? I need at least 5 fans to be used as case fans (in a p180b), probably at 5V and then another 2 used as CPU fans. These would all be 120mm.

Thanks,
Chris

I've had 1 samsung fail after 3 years. The other is working fine. I have another in an external enclosure that seems fine as well.

In the past, I've had an IBM fail, a WD fail and a Maxtor fail. I guess that would put me down to Seagate. :)

A PC for my parents and my in-laws

I'm putting together new PCs for my inlaws and my parents for Xmas. They are both using PIV 2.0gig systems with 512 megs of ram. In other words, they are ready for an upgrade. In any case, I was thinking something like this: - Case is a P180B for the inlaws and I need something for my folks. My inla...

Thanks for the info. I'm upgrading my parents PC (who do no video stuff) and the 2400 HD sounds perfect for them - lower power, no noise and directX 10.

Memory power use

Here's a question:

How much power does DDR2 ram - 1 gig of it- use at 1.8v? What about 2.2v? I'm curious as I am going to add some new ram to my system. I'm not so interested in DDR3 because the price is absolutely crazy.

Looking for some help on setup

Hello all- I'm going to be upgrading my PC soon and I'm trying to have a machine with really low idle power usage, but also a box that has a lot of 'power' in reserve. Basically, I leave this machine on all the time as a file/print share machine and then use it only a few times a week, but when I do...

8600GTS vs. other 8500/8600 models

I'm looking for a new video card to replace an ATI X1300. I don't do any gaming; however, the card at some point will be working on a big TV so PQ and blu-ray/HD-DVD is important. It also need to be able to run aero well. Any advantages to going with the 8600GTS vs. the other 8500/8600 models? Thank...

External encourse for Raptor

I'm going to a laptop from a desktop. I'd like to have one raptor setup in an external eSATA enclosure to hook up when I'm doing some access time intensive database work or something. Any recommendations? I'd assume it would need a fan with the raptor's heat profile.

THanks,
Chris

Yea, I just heard from Intel that they don't support Quads on it... they only support they first round of Conroe's (e6x00) and the allendale E4300. I assume it would also support the E4500 since that's the same stepping. Oh well, I wanted a G0 stepping for the power savings but I guess I'll go with ...

Thanks - I have the first version that supports Conroe - a rev303 maybe? I got it last July when they were still rare if that helps. It's either 303 or 304...

EDIT: I just went back and checked the threads around that time and it must be a rev 3.04.

Thanks!

So the 6x20 chips should be OK? I wonder if the Q6600 G0 stepping would work since it's 1066....

Which CPUs on an original Badaxe?

I have an original badaxe with a D805 on it. It's the first rev that supports C2D (3.03 or something like that). Anyway, intel only lists the original E6x00 processors as supported. Do the new G0 cores work? What about the E6x20?

Thanks for any help!

I think 64gigs would be the smallest I'd go in like a laptop. I am going to stick with XP for another year or so, but Vista Business is like 8 gigs + my installed apps will be another 4 gigs. That's 12 gigs before I get to my documents, which are probably close to 15gigs if I cleaned everything out....

I'm pretty impressed with the G0 parts as well. 3.0ghz is only a few watts on idle above the E4500 M0 part. The load is about 26 watts over, but that's at a 36% high clock speed and with more cache. I think I could live with that chip.

Stupid question but... the E6400 is a 2meg CPU that's the same core as the E6600 right (ie. it's got 4 megs of cache but 2 disabled)? and the E6420 is also a 4 meg cache chip, but with all 4 megs available. So it seems, intel managed to cut idel consumption down by 2/3 and full load by 1/3. However,...

I thought I saw some DD2-800's 1gig modules at newegg, but maybe not. 2gig modules only come at a max of 667.

I guess if I can use these in a board without ECC RAM support I'll pick some up.

Thanks for all the replies. I was under the impression registered DDR2 and FB-DIMMs suffered about the same performance hit. Perhaps I want unbuffered dimms? I actually have a Bad Axe 975X that does ECC. My concern at this point is this would be the end of the road for DDR2. The P35 chipset does not...
