Yea the money question is tough... I figured if I could really get toward 25 watts, that it is probably worth it for something that's on 24/7. Based on those numbers, it may be worth it just to go with a i3 if I'm going to spend the money. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1013-page5.html This bo...

atom for file server.. more sata ports?

Hi everyone: I've sent up a little file server using some old parts I had lying around: Intel Bad Axe board, e4700, 4 GB ram, etc w/ three 2 TB drives in it. Since the data doesn't get updated frequently, I am running them as individual drives rather than RAID and doing a 'manual' RAID1 on all the d...

Thank you all for the suggestions. It looks like the Samsung is the way to go. I was going to go with an SSD drive but that's a LOT more expensive at this point. I'm going to offload stuff to a remote system as well so I just need enough to handle the system drive and a few days of recordings. Shoul...

Silent 300+GB drive for HTPC

Good evening: I'm putting the finishing touches on my HTPC building and I'm looking for a drive to put into my Antec Fusion case. Specifically, I'm going to RAID two drives together for reliability. I don't need huge capacity - anything over 300GB is fine. I just want QUIET w/ low vibrations. I was ...

M12D 850W = awful coil whine

Oh my... I just put together a new system - Asrock x58 Extreme, i720, 12gig Mushkin RAM, ATI 4550, Intel SSD 160 G2. Last night I was installing Vista and the coil whine was unbearable. It seemed to get better after I got video drivers loaded, but then it was back and exists is S3 sleep mode. I'm gu...

Thanks again for the information. I ended up going with the M12D as it will be 4dba lower than my reference point (S12 430) and has plently of power to spare. Plus after dealing with a PC that couldn't sleep properly, I'd rather play safe than sorry with that.

Thank you both for the responses. I may be wrong on idle. I have another i7 system that idles over 100watts even with a pretty large undervolt. Maybe it's something with my Asus board or something. Mike- You are correct. I'm just trying to get the quietest PSU possible for my setup. I assume the 750...

Antec solo and Prolima Megahalems OK?

I'm working on setuping up my new box. I am planning on getting the Antec solo and use a Prolima Megahalems for my heatsink. Anyone use this combination? I'm assuming the Prolima Megahalems, but we all know what assumption is.... :)

Thanks,

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm also in the market for a new low power video card as I'm building a second box. I have a 2900XT in my current machine and it seems to work fine I guess. Highest Sequential Lower-Capacity Drive

I have an application where I need a lot of sequential performance and random access isn't a big deal. I also don't need huge drives. Essentially, I'd like 4 small (500G?) drives that I can RAID0 together. Any 7200 rpm drives using 500G platters yet? I know the 5900 rpm Samsung is but... Thanks, Chris

HDTach CPU usage

I have a quick question on HDTach's CPU Usage. Of course, the smaller the number the better. However, it seems to me this is pretty much a number that is correlated with the performance of the drive. For example, see: http://techreport.com/articles.x/16291/10 Why am I interested? I'm running a progr...

Thanks for the replies. I'm on an older Antec case that Ralph Hunter started with.. a 3700BQE or something like that. I have 1 120mm fan blowing out and that's it. As before, the temps are up about 34 degree for 125 watts which again seems to be pretty poor performanc...

Mats-

Thanks for replying to my other thread quesiton. This looks interesting - I'll wait until March to see what's happening. If you can get 4830/4850 performance on 4700 40nm part, that would be awesome.

Is the power consumpter under Crossfire the same as 2x1 card? It seems a C 4670 setup is about the same speed as a 4850 but that setup would have MUCH lower power, especially at idle.

THanks

Argh - this card is perfect for me if I knew which card doesn't have the idle problem. I was debating between the 4670 and the 4850 but I didn't want to eat all of the 4850's power consumption.

Is there any hope for this or is this a lost cause? Any hope on putting on a fanless cooler?

Thanks,

Moving RAID1 from ICH7R -> ICH10R

Hello-

I have a RAID1 setup on my Bad Axe motherboard which I think has a ICH7R on it. I am probably going to upgrade to a board with the ICH10R controller on it. Is this just a move it over and I'm good to go? I obviously don't want to lose any data.

Thanks,

How to REALLY delete a hard drive

Good day- I have some hard drives which I no longer use. I've managed to go through the data, get everything off I'd like and format the drives. However, I know this isn't a 'full proof' method to make sure the data is really deleted and unrecoverable. Since some of the drives may be useful (2 150gi...
