Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Different brands use difference component...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Question - lower voltage in 2D mode affects the performance of such films or simple flash games? I don't think it would because you aren't changing the clock speed, just the voltage that a particular clock speed uses. Also, if your card needs higher performance it should automatically adjust its pe...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

This coil whine doesn't necessarily manifest itself during 3d gaming right? I have yet to get a game (I know, I'm slow) for my desktop. As long as it doesn't whine during gameplay, I guess I can live with it. If it does whine during gameplay, is it a good enough reason to RMA the card? My experienc...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Ran furmark for about 5 minutes, temps were around 72-73 degrees. However, it made this high-pitched whine, which sounded pretty irritating. Is that a sign of a faulty card? [Edit] There is also this interminent buzzing noise coming from my PSU (Seasonic S12-II 620) when I am in Windows 7, surfing ...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Yes, do exactly that. Flashing a bios that is not a backup from your own card will only increase the risk that it won't work. It appears that Gigabyte VGA@Bios does not want me to flash the modified bios. When I try to modifiy the card's bios and re-flash it, it says that the version is the same an...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

I was just wondering if the voltage drop would have any stability issues. Anyway, I tried downloading the gigabyte GTX460 bios from the website. The version included there is F3, while I have a F12 version. I don't believe those two are compatible based on the FAQ. Could I just modify the backup bi...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Yes. It's Gigabyte GTX460 OC1, 2 fans. I have no way of testing this myself because I no longer own the Gigabyte card, so I strongly suggest if you test this out yourself to have an extra video card handy should you need to restore your original bios to the Gigabyte card. Hope this helped. What do ...

Yes. It's Gigabyte GTX460 OC1, 2 fans. Hrm, interesting. I guess there is a bit of variation in the bioses between different brands of the 460. Okay, I have an idea for you to try. Open up your bios in UE and do a HEX search for this string "47 04 01 21 00 06 26 C4 09 20 00 00 22". Without quotes, ...

Re: Gigabyte GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

First of all thanks for the tutorial! I modded bios for my Gigabyte GTX 460 OC 1GB (v1.0) card. Fans can't spin at 20% and stand still. However the GPU temperature is only 35°C when idle. When playing 1920x1080 mkv video GPU heats up to 45°C leaving the fans at 20% (not spinning). Nevertheless fans...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Thanks for this. I should try this when I can. 30% fan is pretty good in my Evga 460 SC but it always can be quieter. However I need to first figure out how to kill buzzing cards buzzing without killing the card. I got electric varnish that ends squealing when applied but if I apply it wrong place,...

NiBiTor is able to do what you're looking to do, but only with older nVidia cards. There might be a way to do with with software though. Have you tried Rivatuner? It might have that option...

I was wondering, is it possible to alter when the fan ramps up, so for example to set it to stay at minimum until the temperature is 45c?
It's probably possible, but I don't know how to do it.

I would have changed 28 to 14 following your advice, but there was also something esle changed from 8B to 9F, what it does is unknown. In the end of the file? Probably checksum. Yes, that is the checksum at the end of the file. If you use NiBiTor after you do the hex edit it should fix the checksum...

Re: Samsung Syncmaster BX2450

I did some additional testing for you. It seems you can use 640x480x32@75hz for this monitor; however, I wasn't always able to select this resolution from a list in either the Windows display settings or nVidia control panel while using HDMI. So, I tried with a VGA cable and 640x480x32@72hz worked. ...

I actually have this monitor. Just tested it now, using an EVGA GTX 460 as my display adaptor I was able to select and use 800x600 at 75hz in the nVidia control panel. 640x480 was not an available pre-set though. On a side note, I got this monitor recently and am quite pleased with it so far. Howeve...

Re: Quiet nvidia 460 GTX

I have personally tested GTX 460 models from EVGA, Gigabyte, and Galaxy. The Galaxy was kinda loud at idle, while the EVGA and Gigabyte cards were considerably quieter. I'd say the EVGA is about on par with the Gigabyte card in terms of noise at idle because at stock settings the fan on the more rec...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

Thank you for posting this very useful information. I will definitely try this. Just out of curiosity, why did you set the fan speed to 20% and not 0%. After all the GPU idles under 20W so it should be able to run with passive cooling in 2D mode. This might be possible in a computer case with very ...

Re: EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

I actually didn't change the voltage at all. I just changed the fan speed. Do you think the voltage change is necessary? Not necessarily. I noticed your card does not use the reference cooler design, so I'm guessing the cooler on your card is probably more efficient. However, on the EVGA card, sinc...

Hello, I have been a reader of SPCR for a while but have never posted before. I just got an ECS GTX 460 1GB yesterday and the 40% fan speed was way too loud for my tastes. I have no idea what qualifies as "low noise" as apparently the GTX 460 is supposed to be low noise but it is not "low noise" in...

EVGA GTX 460 Fan/Voltage Bios Mod for a quieter GPU

After trying a few different models (Galaxy 470, EVGA 470, Gigabyte 460) of video cards in the nVidia 400 series, I settled on two EVGA 460's in SLI because the other ones I tried were either too loud for my taste, or had other issues. The EVGA GTX (core 720/mem. 1800) 1gb is the quietest 460 card i...
