Re: GTX 670 launched

Good to hear linklemming! I experimented with the "Frame limiter" feature, it is available through MSI Afterburner. I set the frame limit to 60 and the fan curve to only go above 30% if the card reaches 70C. Result is most games run silently at 30% and 60C at almost constant 60 frames (this is at 12...

Re: GTX 670 launched

Just got the windforce and I can happily report: Finally highend cards silent enough for SPCR standards. I can not hear it in idle at 25% which is 660 RPM. And I dont mean "cant hear it over my 3000 RPM CPU fans and HDD" (like in other forums), I mean I cant hear the PC at all (no HDD, only 5 and 7v...

Re: Nvidia GTX 680 reviews

I think tests on load noise are uninteresting, because load noise is easily reduced through fan control and undervolting and most of the time while playing games noise doesnt matter much anyway. But idle noise is always the problem, since often the cards wont allow you to lower the fan speed. I reme...

Anyone know the minimum fan speeds the card can be set to in idle? Is it possible to lower it even further with extra software and how low?

Re: Quiet / Noisy Monitor Survey

I can happily report: Samsung S27A950D no noise at any brightness. Power usage: 20w at 0% and 46w at 100%. Only the external power brick makes strange electrical sounds which do not seem to be influenced by brightness, but only at like 30 cm range in midnight. Anyway it can be buried like 3 meters b...

Re: i5 build with modest silencing

The HDD will ruin your otherwise good build, why do you say SSDs are expensive? They only cost 150 bucks, thats nothing for what they bring. Which is a silent system, fast boot, fast loading. I recommend a crucial m4 and an EXTERNAL HDD which you can switch off when you want silence. HDDs longterm r...

Yeah? I thought the Sandy Bridge CPUs use so little in idle that the differences you describe should be negligable.

Re: Sandy Bridge + i3-2100T -- why can't I get under 22w idl

I don't know if it's been pointed out in this thread already, but all the Sandy Bridge processors are very power efficient at idle. PSU and motherboard determines how low you can go. Correct, but I would say the PSU is more important, especially with regards to efficiency at load. Normal PSUs opera...

Re: Recommendations for a good 16:10 aspect gaming monitor?

About the buzzing noise...they all have it at lower brightness, some more, some less. But at 100% brightness there is no noise. Or find one with an external PSU. There seem to be none at 16:10, currently.

Re: I was so close to acceptable, then I bought a WD5000AAKX

If you can afford a 560 seasonic, why not a 100$ SSD. I hate HDD noise, it drives me nuts. I use a 80GB SSD now and only use external HDDs for spacier stuff, HDDs which I can turn OFF. I guess if you had to get a normal HDD, those netbook 2.5 ones are pretty silent, the one in my Dell mini ,which is...

Re: Modern video card noise: good enough for SPCR?

To answer the original question, NO, they are small airplanes inside the computer, if you read reviews and they say it is silent at 40db, you have to wonder where the f 40db is silent? At the train station maybe? No, the only sure way is to get any card you want (preferably EVGA because of the warra...

More info on the "fix" please... is it because of the surge protector, or the motherboard, that solved the buzzing? What brand is the surge protector? Is Belkin good enough or not? Get one with external power supply, if it makes noise, you can silence it easier.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor

The noise comes from the power supply, its the same noise big room lamps make when you dimm the light. It typically goes away at 100%, unfortunatly 100% uses 3 times the power as 0%. A good bet is to look out for monitors with external PSUs, so you can at least put the PSU in a dark place where no o...

Could also be your mouse, some logitech and other mice emit constant buzz noise. Put a towel over it and see if it stops.
Might still be your PSU, most of them have this problem, especially the x-series.

And I bet the same is true for every super-quiet PSU maker. If it was so easy to fix, it would have been done already... and I would never have heard buzzing from any electronics. People fix it at home with plastic spray, so how hard can it be to properly attach the coil kernels to prevent vibratio...

Re: Best energy efficient monitor?

I believe you because the external power supply is indeed most likely the reason as the noise comes from the transformer when dimming the backlight. I will look out for that next time when buying a monitor, so far I did not know that anything but Apple came with external PSUs. Some sort of list of m...

My Samsung SyncMaster P2370 uses less than 30w at typical brightness and has absolutely zero buzzing/humming at any brightness setting. The most important thing is brightness. I have measured my 22" LG Flatron and it uses 40W at 100% brightness and 17W at 0%. No other settings affect power consumption. It still looks ok at 0%, you can adjust windows settings which do not influence the power draw of the monitor. BUT...it start to mak...

Except for the quiet buzzing, the x-400FL is perfect. At my low loads (60 to 130w) it does not get warm at all, even without airflow in the case. People often mention seasonics warning, that that the case needs to have ventilation for the x-400, but that is false. I have the warning in front of me, ...
