Does LVM suffer from concurrent access?

Hi,

I have some 500GB/250GB HDDs. I want to use them to build a LVM so it is easier for browsing and managing data. Question is, will the HDD performance degrade by concurrent read/write operations since OS only sees a single volume? Appreciate for expert advice.

Re: Samsung F4 Raid 0 vs Caviar Black

Concurrent access is probably not a problem. I may open many different programs and a lot of windows at the same time, but actually only work on one, except for waiting for video rendering to finish.

Re: Samsung F4 Raid 0 vs Caviar Black

Thank you so much guys. The computer is mainly for websites development, so that is why I have all kinds of data. Based on your comments, I am now thinking to use a separate Raid 0 for video only, and a single drive for other files. Now the question is, which HDD to go, F4 or Black, for the single d...

Re: Samsung F4 Raid 0 vs Caviar Black

I have 128G SSD for Mac OS and APPs. All other stuff is stored on HDD, including documents, pictures, video, music, VMware images and tons of source codes. The apps operating on these data are of a wide variety, like Adobe CS, MS Office, iTunes, programming tools, video player and editor, etc. In th...

Samsung F4 Raid 0 vs Caviar Black

I am interested in Raid 0 with two F4 2TB drives since it is quiet and fast, but it is 5400RPM. Will the Raid 0 be slower than Caviar black 2TB with even higher noise level? How can they be compared in terms of speed and noise, regardless of capacity?

Re: Recommend quieter HD than WD Caviar Blacks?

Is Samsung F3 1TB close to Caviar Black 1TB performance? I have no experience with either, but hear they both are good.

Re: FT02 vs P183 which is quieter?

i do a lot of video editing, i own both cases, the p183 is the way to go for this purpose... it's quieter, and it's a higher-quality build. these low-end video cards don't have much in the way of cuda capability, i would go cheap and fanless, then replace it in a year or so. Hi danimal, I read your...

Re:

Nice data. Do you have a comparison between F4 2TB/5400RPM and F3 1TB/7200RPM? I am curious as sb. told me they have the similar speed. If it is true, then why bother 7200RPM? I bought half of dozen of these drives, originally for media but they might replace my caviar blacks now as performance is p...

Re: FT02 vs P183 which is quieter?

Good to know FT02 has rubbers for HDD, too. That makes it more like a $230 case. The sound dampening on side panels are just foams, which are different with P183's multilayer panel structure. But P183's top fan problem is really annoying. Still hesitating ... :? And I am also considering to give up ...

Re: FT02 vs P183 which is quieter?

the card sholud be cooler in the ft02, so you should be able to run your fans slower... plus a big cooler like the mugen will probably like the airflow in the ft02 as well though it looks like you haven't picked a card yet... could i recommend the MSI N460GTX Twin Frozr II SOC? efficient and quiet ...

FT02 vs P183 which is quieter?

Hi, I am building a new PC mainly for video editing and graphics work, almost no gaming. The components are already purchased as following: CPU: i7-950 with the cooler Scythe Mugen-2 Rev.B SCMG-2100 MB:Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Memory: Kingston DDR3 1600 2GBx3 HDD: WD Black 1TB Video card: EVGA EE or Gigab...

Re: Quiet nvidia 460 GTX

I have personally tested GTX 460 models from EVGA, Gigabyte, and Galaxy. The Galaxy was kinda loud at idle, while the EVGA and Gigabyte cards were considerably quieter. I'd say the EVGA is about on par with the Gigabyte card in terms of noise at idle because at stock settings the fan on the more re...
