Re: Needing to Build a Quiet Digital Audio Workstation!

Thanks for the replies guys. :) I agree with what's been said about the advantages of Sandy Bridge, I guess my biggest issue is really just trying to find a board that isn't outrageously expensive. The only places I've been able to find any are selling $130 boards for $400+, seems like total madnes...

Re: Silent PC with ability to play games

I dont need my system right now but I am a bit afraid of completely new hardware and technologies. As we saw with the SandyBridge there are often problems at the beginning. And what about the prices in 2 month for all these new hardware? I dont want to spend more money... At the end I only have to ...

Re: Please critique - semi passive sandy bridge

This flaw has been overblown. I have two core i5-2500k systems with one overclocked to 4.8ghz running. One is a gaming pc, the other an htpc. I mostly use the sata 6 ports so no issue there. Plus the sata 6 off marvel are fine too. Off the sata2, I have a raid 0 running and it seems fine so far. Ev...

Re: Intel 6-series chips are damaged goods, now what?

I was set to upgrade my E8400+P45 board into E2500K sandy bridge and P67 board as its clear that games I now play would like some more CPU power and prefirabely also more cores. Unreal engine seems to love more cores and some strategy games love to use one core for AI so my dual core isn't quite......

Re: Please critique - semi passive sandy bridge

Hi All Im in Australia so pricing and availability are not what it is in US. Seasonic S12II 620W is already $135 (CP850 is 150, SeaSonic S12II 520 was not listed). I know its totally overkill, but for the handfull of dollars it kind of seems like a fair enough option. At some point I'll probably up...

Re: Please critique - semi passive sandy bridge

With his build, any of these should be more than sufficient. With reference to quietness, only the X-400FL would be actually preferable (even if it costs slightly more than it). Otherwise the CP-850 would make perfect sense, despite its surplus power (the other two Seasonics are significantly loude...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

Man, I wish I had seen this thread before I bought my Sandy Bridge upgrade on Monday. I just got my Intel DP67BA installed, and NO FAN SPEED CONTROL. I can't seem to throttle it even with SpeeedFan v4.42 (tool shows 3 speed controls, and none do anything). The BIOS only has a hardware monitor - the...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

Even if the case fan was so close to the heatsink, just to be definitely safe give a further read to those figures with Real Temp (you may find it on TechPowerUp! site): they should be identical (or you need an offset on SpeedFan). Thanks quest, I did that. Speed Fan reads System: 25 CPU: 25 AUX 22...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

If I leave my computer on this setting for normal operation, will this damage my cpu fan? It's not unreasonable it may happen, sleeve bearing are less solid: on the other hand, they are cheap to replace. But does the CPU fan start when you stress the CPU itself? Just a side note, even if Mugen 2 is...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

I use the 7v hardwire trick on all of my fans except for the PSU. Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

My bios will monitor fan speed, but not allow me to adjust it. Are you sure SpeedFan doesn't actually work for you? On the costlier Intel BG mobo it should work well . If in case, in the configure window you have to hit the advanced tab, find the relevant header and probably set it to "software con...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

As long as you're PWM enabled, you should be good to go. It should slow down a lot when you're idling (especially if you're ~30C). Check your BIOS for fan control, or SmartFan or something like that, should be in there, because that's what Intel calls the control for it (or did call it..). Beyond t...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

i've run speedfan on multiple computers, it's useless in a production environment. i always end up with manual fan controls, or programming the bios to 50%(three-pin fan header), which sometimes isn't enough, although it should work for the second cpu fan. the first cpu fan should be plugged into t...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

Hey guys, now that I've got this sweet machine built, I could use a little help optimizing. Those two fans are overkill with the heat sink this massive. The thing never clears 30c. Speed fan will give me temps and rpm, but won't change the fan speed. Is there software somewhere, or (worst comes to w...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

Thanks for the advice, bonestonne. I'm not terribly worried about the Fast Track Ultra; it's a pretty stable interface so far. Yeah, there weren't a ton of options when it came to a single-knob, PCI-slot fan controller. I didn't want the Zalman 'cause it's best used as an internal device, and the Ap...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

OK, fair enough. Then I suggest that you get a 1200rpm Scythe fan not an 800rpm one. I have had both and a 1200rpm version works better at 600-1200 rpm than an 800rpm version works at 600-800 rpm. Control is better and the noise level is lower (at the same rpm). Will I want a single-fan controller ...

Re: Advice Needed on Audio Editing PC Build

Okay, I'll pick up a replacement cooler then. Good thing 1156 heat sinks work with 1155! The Scythe Mugen 2 for $40 doesn't look bad. I assume that's about as cheap as I can get while still be quiet? Remember, I'm not planning to overclock. I think I'll stick with a quiet, fanned PSU. Can't argue wi...

Thanks so much for the reply! That's very useful info. Yeah, I was leaning toward the Solo/non-passive build for cost-effectiveness. And yes, I'll be waiting for Sandy Bridge now. Since I submitted this topic I've done a bit of research and created two builds, a passive build around the Lancool case and a build with a fanned PSU and HS around the Antec Solo. The former is a little above my budget right now, but in addition to the related questions above I'm curious which opti...
