Re: Silent PC for Gaming/Work

Good news. I have received all the parts and have been up and running since about a week. TLDR: Super happy. Surprised at how quiet it is when gaming. Slight coil whine from GPU at load. I installed the GPU in the standard top slot to maximize intake of cool air underneath its fans (never tested the...

Re: Silent PC for Gaming/Work

I found a French review that seems to show great noise vs temperature ratings for the NH-D15 Chromax, so I'll definitely go with that :) Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I'm thinking a lower CPU temperature should help the GPU stay cooler as well. https://overclocking.com/test-noctua-nh-d15-chro...

Re: Silent PC for Gaming/Work

Thanks a lot for your suggestions! I've already learned a lot from your responses in other threads as well. After looking into it, I will probably go with the Aorus Master. It seems to have a better audio solution as well, plus I do like the three M2-slots like you said. I assume it would be best to...

Silent PC for Gaming/Work

Hi. I'm planning to build a new PC for gaming and work, and want it to be as silent as possible, especially during idle. My current PC was built in 2011 based on guides by this site, and it's been great (I have upgraded the GPU once :) ). Here's what I'm planning so far (inspired by some forum posts...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

I've got a question related to your experience with these cards: When you say that the fan noise under load is audible, could please let me know the distance at which you hear it and how far from the PC you need to be to make it inaudible (considering a very quiet room)? In my case the card will be...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

Did some more tests. "Adaptive" vsync seems like a better choice, since it also reduced input lag in BioShock Infinite, while keeping the other games intact. Adaptive vsync is supposed to disable vsync when running at lower than 60 fps (your monitor's refresh rate). A bit strange since the benchmark...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

Great news! I read up some on vsync and gave the global vsync option in Nvidia's Control Panel a try (3D Settings -> Manage 3D settings -> Global settings -> Vsync), which enables it for all applications. I set vsync to on and combined this with changing "Maximum pre-rendered frames" to 1 (in the sa...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

Well, it's hard to troubleshoot with every parts in the case: it'd be better to take apart the rig, and to put the PSU as far as you can from the GPU. Obviously, if it were possible. Yeah, I agree. I could try to move the GPU to one PCI-E slot further away from the PSU at least. In my original setu...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

Thanks for the info, Luca, I will read up on that. Just tried to pinpoint the whine. It's hard to say if it's coming from the GPU or PSU, as they're so close together and the sound might be bouncing, but I'm leaning towards the GPU, especially as that's what introduced the problem. Seems to be comin...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

So, this is a great card, the fans are very quiet compared to other stock fans, the most quiet I've owned. I don't notice the fans at all until about 30%, at 60 degrees C, and it's hard to push this card in normal gaming. Using the Asus GPU Tweak tool it's a bit confusing if the fans turn off or not...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

Guys, don't forget that the Asus card uses one 8-bit connector for power. I missed that detail, only had 6-pin on my old, so have to go and buy one tomorrow. It's also a very big card, almost didn't fit in my case (Antec Nine Hundred Two V3) without removing hdd boxes.

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

I'm also upgrading from Asus Radeon HD 6850 with stock cooler, which is very quiet at idle but quite noisy when gaming. My Asus Strix 970 will probably arrive tomorrow. Time to start gaming again. :) I'm a bit worried about the coil whine people have been complaining about, as only some seem to be a...

Re: Asus GTX970 STRIX

With the new "fan off" technology, I guess we have two points to consider: Which has the longest idle time (= fans off) and which has the lowest fan noise during load. Comparing only MSI and Asus, Asus does sound like it has longer idle times, turning on fans on a slightly higher temperature compare...

New Silent Gaming PC article

Hi, I really liked your Silent Mid Gaming PC article published in 2010: http://www.silentpcreview.com/Silent_Mid_Gaming_PC So much in fact that I built one myself, with some minor modification, which I'm still using today (it's awesome). That article was the best I found on the Internet on the topic...

Re: Silent Mid Gaming PC Build Guide

Is there any drawback in mounting the Scythe Mugen 2 fan on the bottom of the heatsink, so that it blows air upwards through the heatsink towards the top rather than towards the back? I accidently bought too big RAM memory sticks (Corsair Vengeance), so I'm afraid that the Mugen won't fit in the rec...

Re: Silent Mid Gaming PC Build Guide

Thanks for answering, Mike. 2. it really depends on how the VGA fan is powered... and how quiet you really want to go. The external controller was used only to bring down the fan speed of the Gelid Icy Cooler fans just a notch. If the Zalman fanmate2 was not used, the noise level might have been 1-2...

Re: Silent Mid Gaming PC Build Guide

Thanks a lot for this guide, I'm basing my next PC build on it, with some alternative components that was recommended in the article. Two questions: Is the single case fan an exhaust fan, i.e. does it blow air out of the case? If I use an ASUS P8P67 motherboard, do I still need an external fan contr...

Never mind, it seems like it is a PWM fan:

Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 2: Intel DH67BL & Asus P8H67-M EVO

I'm a bit worried by: "The P8H67-M EVO's CPU Fan header is controllable with PWM fans only, while its Chassis Fan header can control both PWM and DC fans".

Is the Scythe Mugen 2 rev B a PWM fan? Would it be compatible with a 2500K on a ASUS P8H67 or P8P67?

Re: A silent gaming PC

This Corsair is an excellent performer, maybe the best, but personally I would rather an equivalent OCZ Vertex 2, as it has a better rating on Newegg for reliability. Thanks, I'll check that out. You have just two fans: the videocard and the PSU have their own fan controllers. For the motherboard, ...

Re: Best silent GPU at $200 - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SOC?

walle: Thanks, that's an important point you make. You're right that this might not be a good card if you plan on changing the stock cooler. I've also read that it's quite larger, larger than a standard GTX 460 card, which could be problematic for some smaller cases. However, my own plan is to find ...

Re: Best silent GPU at $200 - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SOC?

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised that they get such different results comparing the PowerColor Radeon HD 6850 PCS+ with the Sapphire Radeon HD 6850.

Too bad they don't test the Gigabyte 460 GTX SOC version as it's supposedly very different from the OC version.

My own Google research has lead me to believe that the best silent graphic card at that performance level is the Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC. See this comparison . Unless I hear contradictory results, I'm planning to buy one this week for a silent gaming PC. However, if you're not planning to play any game...

Re: A silent gaming PC

Thanks again, Luca, it's great to hear your reflections on the topic. I think I'll stay with the Corsair AX 750W PSU just to be safe. Best silent GPU at $200 - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SOC?

I’ve been looking for a graphic card that is near-silent with its original cooler, and costs around $200. The cards I've found the most interesting are: ASUS Radeon HD 6850 "DirectCU" ( recommended by SPCS) PowerColor Radeon HD 6850 PCS+ Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SOC I finally...

A silent gaming PC

Hi, First, I'd like to say thank you for dedicating this site to silent computers. I think sound level is a very underrated element considering how many hours we spend in front of our computers each day. I'm planning to buy a new computer, and I seek both good gaming performance and silence. Silence...
