Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I caved in and ordered the Accelero. It looks like Performance-PCs currently has the best price. It was ~$92, including shipping. Newegg would probably be just a little bit more for me, after tax+shipping, and they don't have it in stock. With the stock cooler, the card is actually not bad at idle,...

Re: How do you silence a front apartment door?

I just tried the towel trick and it didn't seem to help too much. It probably isn't too big of an issue since these noises just last for a few seconds and then completely disappear. I could also potentially run into Homeowners Association regulation issues for modifying aspects of the door. The only...

How do you silence a front apartment door?

I have this front door that I want to seal off. I've attached a couple images. http://www.majorindulgence.com/file_exchange_data/50/door.jpg http://www.majorindulgence.com/file_exchange_data/50/seal.JPG Currently, there's some sort of black seal around the left, right, and top edges, but I don't thi...

Re: P183 or R3

The P183 allows you to install super-long video cards like the 6990, whereas the R3 Define doesn't. So if that isn't an issue, I would get the R3 since it has a cleaner look, both inside and out.

Re: Quiet / Noisy Monitor Survey

I have a NEC PA271W. I do not run at 100% brightness (otherwise it would burn my eyes).

Only if I put my ear against the air vents do I hear a faint sizzle noise. But under real world usage, it's completely inaudible.

Re: Recommendations for a good 16:10 aspect gaming monitor?

The buzzing noise that monitors make is caused by the inverter, which is used to control the brightness of the backlight. On my monitor, I can only hear the buzzing if my ear is actually pressed up against the exhaust slits on the top or sides of my monitor. Otherwise I cannot hear them at all, even...

Re: To those of you with 1st gen Macbook Pros, beware....

The dust part I know you all realize, but gutting out the logic board is also something that's necessary after a few years since Apple puts some cheap ceramic stuff on the cores. That part people may not realize how bad it is, and the fact that it's a bitch to excavate the logic board. I do apprecia...

To those of you with 1st gen Macbook Pros, beware....

I've always felt that my Macbook Pro run pretty hot, but after years of use it just kept getting hotter. So I finally decided that I would dust off all the component and check out the status of the CPU. Well, it turns out, the pictures below are what's inside: Fan area: http://www.majorindulgence.co...

Re: Can I have 2 video cards but only activate one of them?

I've spent so much time working with and evaluating $25, $30, $40, etc cards all the way up to the 5750/6750 that I find it hard to think of the twice crippled $30 video card in the same category as a 6750. From my end looking up I always though of the 6850 as a high end card with the $250 and up c...

Re: Can I have 2 video cards but only activate one of them?

But the toggle functionality does not turn off the higher end card. I don't want idle. I want off so that it doesn't draw any power and creates 0db noise. My standards for business class computers is sub 10db noise level during general productivity usage. What 580, 590, 6970, or 6990 has sub 10db a...

Re: Can I have 2 video cards but only activate one of them?

I figured there was no way to do this, which sucks because currently business class computers and gaming computers still have to be mutually exclusive. Most of the stuff I do on my computer are in line with business computers: fast, reliable, silent, efficient, aesthetically simple, ergonomic, etc. ...

Can I have 2 video cards but only activate one of them?

Basically, I was thinking about this: I love the silence and low power usage of a fanless video card, but I also want to game occasionally. What if I bought two video cards, one fanless and one high-end for gaming and install both inside the computer. When I'm not gaming, only the fanless card would...
