Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

So yeah, I guess that's about it (never mind the HDMI thing). Many thanks to you wise men - may your days be long - for helping me see this through (special thanks to quest_for_silence and Abula). Of course, the real adventure has yet to begin. :) See below for the final build (it looks like Asus is...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Thanks for the picture, Abula. I hope you didn't take that just for me. It looks like a tight fit though. I don't know the exact measurements but if you say that the Ripjaws are taller, I believe you. So that leaves the GeIL and the Kingston. Even though the Kingston is more expensive, I'm st...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

So I've got another issue I'd like to discuss with you guys. Yes, another one. My father gave me his old (2007) LCD tv and I was glad because I can watch 1080p movies on it through my pc. The only drawback was that the audio didn't work (TRS-connector on ext. 3, DVI-HMDI on HDMI port, all acco...

Haha, I feel the same, hausertrey. Even if you're not building it yourself (like me), it's still a lot to trouble your mind with. So I am very glad too that we have these wise (old) men to fall back on. :D

Oh, the link wasn't really working but you found one of them. Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

By the way, quest, since you asked about my first name, I asked my father about it. He told me that it blew over from Spain during the time that Johan Cruijff (famous soccer player) played there. He named his son Jordi and so a lot of people did too.

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Cheers for ROG , someone answered that life long question of the fan control. :D So it looks like I'm back at the P8P67 Pro, which is fine by me. Not sure if I'll still go with the Noctua's but I'll look into that. I will need 3-pin fans though. Edit: As suggested before by quest_for_silence, ...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

It seems now that neither of the boards support voltage control. That means I'd have to lose the Antec fan - and that seems like a waste - or pick a new case. I'm not really looking forward to doing that. So I'm looking at the P8P67one last time. See what comes up.

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Thanks to Rhialto (and Abula providing the link) I found out about fan control on the Gene-Z: Correct, you need a 4pin fan to control your fan. 3 pin fans can be controlled with a rehostat that controls voltage which adjusts speed. through the bios, with the 4pin, the fan has a sensor to tell it to ...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Personally, I haven't built a machine on a full ATX board since... a long time. What do you need to install? A mATX can handle two graphics cards if you want that, and most motherboards these days have enough LAN, audio, and other ports. The only thing that's not standard yet that is frequently nee...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

So it seems both the Gene-Z and DP67BG will support the fans I want. But the Gene-Z has a HDMI port, it's Z68 and it's the same price as the DP67BG. Also, it has a more modern BIOS utility to control the system (though I'm not sure if this really matters for performance). Any comments on this issue?...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Several fan speed controller options can control fan speed including open-loop and closed-loop fan speed control. Open-loop fan control sets a speed based on a percentage of maximum fan speed, which is typically a voltage or pulse-width modulation (PWM) duty cycle. The fan speed might be monitored t...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Well, I always got the impression from previous posts that the Asus boards required a PWM fans for software control. It's required for the CPU header. Yes, exactly. The rest is voltage controlled. Can someone tell me what this means: Fan speed control using voltage control (4-pin fan headers front,...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

A 4-pin AKA PWM-fan will be potentially controllable in any with header. Go with one of those and you'll one thing less to worry about. The issue was more whether or not a 3-pin fan could be controlled through a 4-pin header on that specific motherboard. We suspect it will work. :D It does s...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

With reference to hardware, there's no technical requirement but using some screwdrivers. But it's up to you. That maybe puts it a bit too simple but I admit I'm afraid to screw something up. Having a warranty is comforting. :) At anyway, what makes a system quiet (or silent) is how you use it: are...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

What? And who will do it? Alternate... :D I'm not that technical, really, so a warranty is nice. If in case, is the Intel DP67BG available at Alternate.nl? Broadly speaking I don't think that a fully PWM mobo (like my/Abula's Gene-Z) should be absolutely preferred. The Intel board is available at A...

But that's ridiculous. 4-pin PWM is the same as 3-pin, only with that extra PWM pin. Or am I going crazy here?

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

So I'm getting annoyed with Alternate now. Let me tell you why. Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Well, this fan control topic has really been a nuisance, I have to admit. I'm just waiting for the final answer from Alternate now. I'll probably go with the Antec (which has a 3-pin cable header after all) on the 4-pin motherboard header (which is possible if I'm not mistaken) and the two Noctua's ...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

I don't know if ROG's post is applicable to your board: at first sight I would say no. I can say that from what I read on SpeedFan bugtraq service the P8P67 PRO should be now fully supported (with the same features of FanXpert: so PWM only fan for the CPU, DC controlled ones for the two controllabl...

Jordi, I do not understand why do you continue to rely upon Alternate's customer support that has proven so many times unreliable. Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Got my reply from Alternate tech support. The guy told me that the Asus P8P67 PRO can support 2x 3-pin (CHA_FAN2; PWR_FAN1) AND 1x 4-pin. The 4-pin I can control through AI Suite, the other two through BIOS. I don't think this is a pleasant solution, since it's probably way more comfortable controll...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

I don't know if I've well understood, however, the PWR fan header is meant to hook up a PSU, but just for sensing its fan, not to control it (not to mention that I don't recall right now any PSU with such an external cable). Hooking up the fan to the PWR fan header is an option too (if you don't ca...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

So you may either buy the additional bracket , or you may go for a fully compatible board (like the P8P67M PRO if it has enough fan headers for your needs, or a suitable ATX by Intel, MSI or Gigabyte). Please take note that the True Spirit should be more compact than the HR02, and I think you won't...

Re: Got some advice for my new (gaming) build?

Use the compare feature of the ASUS site: 2 SATA/eSATA less, three slots less, no bluetooth, Realtek vs Intel GbE, different FW chip, two USB 3.0 less (but two USB 2.0 more), less refined VRM and a bunch of other minor goodies. It's all due to the larger form factor. Well, I like keeping my options...
