Re: Help choosing a PSU

I have the SSR-550PX, which I can't imagine being that much of an improvement over the SSR-550FX in terms of noise or efficiency. I also researched using Lambda's reports and I think they're reliable based on user reports of certain other brands and models. Quote myself from earlier this year when I...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

I discovered a new source of noise: hard drive vibrations. This never occurred prior to me removing the front panel. It took weeks before I narrowed down the root case and remembered some users in the past had the same problem with other Fractal cases: the bottom dust filter. Without the front panel...

Re: suggestions for prebuilt desktop

I don't know. I lost interest in future technology after all the years of researching and finally assembling my PC  . I don't like to upgrade unless the product has become dead or really obsolete. I do like to answer questions about existing tech though, like the fact that 1.35V of course p...

Re: suggestions for prebuilt desktop

You need Z370 to use the higher RAM speeds as Abula stated. In your other thread, you mentioned no overclocking. Therefore just stick with Intel's native 2666 @ 1.2v on H370.

Re: Define C: 120mm vs 140mm intake

The shroud lid is right at the front, so if there's a fan blowing there even with it open, the force of the fan's blowing air will constantly overpower the drive's heat towards the back of the case and I'm not sure how it can escape. Removing the shroud is the only answer I can think of it, but it r...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

SATA SSDs' casing act as a heatsink in a way. They're less prone to heat compared to M.2 SSDs. If you're still concerned look at my other post: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=69991&p=608308#p608308 In my R5 PC I removed all drive cages (same with Define C) and just left my...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

Just watch out for the newer plastic washers for LGA1151 (don't use them, otherwise the CPU contact will lessen and will result in higher temperatures). I presume you are talking about the washers that go under the 'stud nut' spacers on the original Kotetsu, not the plastic spacers on the Kotetsu M...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

btw what can you sat about meshify c ? You're welcome! Gamers Nexus review that I linked earlier should paint a clear picture: Meshify C has better temps due to ventilated front panel (no surprise) vs Define C's solid panel, at a cost of higher noise. However, once the Define C's front panel is rem...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

Like Abula stated, once your reach a certain plateau, lots of coolers are roughly similar in temperatures and noise, so the NH-U14S is still a solid option. I had nearly zero knowledge in PC assembly too, but due to my etailer shutting down in Canada last year (NCIX), and without wanting to compromi...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

You forgot a lot of things , but with so much info that's not surprising. Define C's max heatsink height is 170mm. U14S = 165mm. Kotetsu = 160mm high, so no problems for both. Scythe Kotetsu model is SCKTT-1000. There's a new model SCKTT-2000 that I haven't looked into that much, but it could ...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

To quote myself earlier: I have the u14s in my R5 with room to spare. I also have the Kotetsu in my newer Define C build. Height difference only makes a difference if your case has limited space, otherwise maybe some performance and weight differences? From memory I believe the NH-D15S is only 1 or ...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

There are always trade offs. BQ = more expensive, larger case in most dimensions + other quirks. Fractal cases just happen to suit my needs more. why should i buy something and have to replace parts on it, or suffer from annoying noise? That is the question of the day. It applies to so many products...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

I left the R5 stock fans in place, but added a 140mm Antec TruQuiet as a front intake as I was very cheap at the time. That PC is now for my mother (light usage), so temperatures are never a problem. Unfortunately, because the two front fans are running concurrently, I can't tell if the ticking is o...

Re: noktua nh-d15s vs nh-u14s

The ticking noise is actually quite common even dating back to Fractal's earlier models and I've seen many user reports of it. It's just a noise character of the fans, not a defect. It's noticeable, but quiet. Like Steve always suggest, always try the stock fans first to see if you can tolerate nois...

For clarity, here is a quick photoshop job to illustrate what I am thinking. A second one under it definitely starts to have some metal in the way, especially ...

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini C question

You're very welcome. I thought about the drive cage a lot and found it technically can hold one 3.5" HDD and two SSDs because of the lowest "slot", but the tiny curved up edges would hinder the cables slightly. Not sure if may be possible. He's a poor quality photo I took: Drive Cage.png The SSD mou...

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini C question

Back at home....I was a wrong. For a 2.5" drive that's around 4" long, there's about 1.5" clearance between my mobo components to the drive if it's placed right up to the very edge towards the side panel. Whether your cables coming out from the drive will allow sufficient room is another matter, but...

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini C question

The PSU shroud isn't designed to be removed completely because it's riveted to the frame. If you mean just the shroud lid above the drive cage area, then it's possible to place the drive on top of the cage, but there are no mounting holes. If your mobo is ATX size in the Define C (not the Mini), the...

Re: M.2 SSD under GPU: Bad idea (in a quiet PC)?

I researched this before as I had the same concerns before deciding to go with Samsung 850 EVO over the 960 EVO: that specific M.2 heatsink from MSI mobo was one of the few or only one that was detrimental to overall temps of the SSD, but they improved it on the new gen and other heatsinks can reduc...

Re: Fractal Design Define Mini C question

The power supply shroud worsens noise by giving the fan a hard surface to blow against. I've not noticed any detriment noise-wise due to the shroud. The only drawback for me was drive and PSU cable management - a pain in tight space. The advantage is that it can act as a wind tunnel for air flow in...

I rebooted into the BIOS, switched it from PWM to DC mode with all the settings unchanged on this he...

Re: Quiet PC build - suggestions

My own recent experience is that a QVL will only tell which RAM that are verified to function on that motherboard. Do not expect it to be able to reach the RAM manufacturer's rated max speed! (Although some RAM do, it boils down to many factors.) I recently built my first PC and experienced this to...
