Re: Bay-trail motherboards

I think we're diverging of the subject, but you can pxe boot msdos and freedos images using the memdisk loader. LABEL MSDOS_MEMDISK MENU LABEL MSDOS kernel pxelinux.cfg/memdisk append initrd=dos/msdos71.img --edit-- fixed the swypo. hmm, PXE boot? this never occurred to me as i have never booted th...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

i might upgrade to debian jessie first - a testing release and see if it is has new enough packages.

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

Hey guys, I'll share with you some details about my struggle with the Gigabyte J1900 board GA-J1900N-D3V I bought couple of days ago. 1. I managed to start it after trying the third ram stick that finally worked. Apparently 1.5V ddr3 is not the way to go. With bad RAM the machine just keeps restarti...

Re: HDD vibration & noise reducing methods - ranked

I don't understand some of you guys running your disks without silencing enclosures and yet wondering how to make the drives less noisy with spring mounting :) Its the first thing to do to put the disk in the best silencing enclosure you can find and than care about mounting or whatever. I am also c...

Re: New WD red series NAS drives.

I expect my drives to be really silent. I run them in a fanless atom server/htpc with a picoPSU, the drives are the only components producing noise. Using silencing enclosure the noise gets down but is still noticable even from a distance - and I keep things inside a small rack enclosure. I believe ...

Re: New WD red series NAS drives.

I bought the 3TB RED drive and got it today. Big disappointment. It sounds pretty noisy especially when there is activity. I cannot really test it because it is faulty. When I turn it on it is giving strange noises and it looks like it repeatedly tries to access some block, it gives this periodic so...

Re: New WD red series NAS drives.

One caveat: The previous post gave me the impression that the poster was considering the red and green drives potentially application-equivalent except possibly for sound and price -- they are not! WD clearly states that the red drives are designed and intended for NAS on-all-the-time applications,...

Re: New WD red series NAS drives.

Can somebody please verify the quietness of red drives comparing to green drives? WD doesn't really tout it as a feature but if they were truly quieter, they definitely should! I don't use raid and for media storage the less audible the drive the better - except money it is all that matters to me. W...
