Re: 6TB WD Red drives make squealing noise at power off?

I have a pair of WD50EFRX and they both make a squealing noise when powering down. They are pretty much silent when running, though. WAY quieter than the Toshiba 5TB "Cloud Storage" drives I also run, which are just noisy old enterprise drives.

So, you're tarring all Seagates with the one brush, just because you anecdotally see lots of Seagate drives? Right, glad we got that sorted. Yes, but not because I "see" a lot of faulty Seagate HDD's, but based on how many I have supplied in PC's and have become faulty inside the first year. Which ...

To stop resonance vibrations, add mass to the case by setting a cheap marble chopping board to the top of the case. :)

Re: Quietest faster large HDD right now? 3TB or 4TB?

The past few WD Blue and Blacks I've had have been noisy, mostly vibration which leads to resonance, or the 2TB Black actually made the floor vibrate. Greens and Reds are both very quiet. Seagate's Desktop.15 (and therefore the Seagate NAS) is quiet as far as idle noise, but accessing noise tends to...

Re: Spinpoint M9T 2tb 2.5" 9.5mm

newegg doesn't sell this drive bare but seagate sells it as an external drive which can be removed and then used. I wouldn't be so sure. Most portable HDD's now have a circuit-board that outputs directly to USB rather than SATA. Whilst this is true on the most part, the Seagate Backup Plus (STDR200...

Re: My energy efficient NAS & general purpose server

The Pi is a terrible NAS unit. The NIC runs off the already quite broken USB bus. Asking it to run two drives as well is a disaster waiting to happen. You'd be better off with a cheap TPLink router and running OpenWRT or something similar on it, at least the USB works properly on those, and you have...

My Asustor has a temp controlled 70mm fan. The two Seagates in it make more noise then the fan, and they're pretty quiet.

Just to point out that with ZeroCore support, any HD7850 or higher will shut down it's fan totally while the machine is idle.

My Asus HD7850 will go silent as long as it's running Windows 8.1 and latest AMD drivers.

I'm running 8.1 Enterprise, and have been for well over a month. It was a fresh install (I have a Technet subscription, so I got 8.1 before the unwashed masses). It's been smooth sailing.

I also upgraded my 2 month old rMBP to 10.9 Mavericks, and it's been a terrible experience.

Yeah, those InWin cases are loud. I ran a BP-series one fanless for a while, but the PSU fan got loud too. Gave up on it. The "HTPC2" entry in my signature is what we use in our bedroom, hooked up via HDMI to a 32" Toshiba LCD. Sound is via analogue to the bedroom hifi amp (old Myryad MI-120). I use a Freezer Pro 7 with no fan on my i3-3225 in my server. Only two fans in the machine are the 120mm Fractal fans supplied. Your i3-550 should be OK with similar heatsink, assuming you have some case airflow.

You don't have to physically take the button out to replace the LED. The power LED pulls easily out of the holder it's in - there's just a tiny bit of hot glue holding it in.
