Voltage mod
Why on earth did intel set the voltage to high in the first place especially when the used such a crappy heat sink? I think because the system isn't 100% stable at maximum load at lower voltages. I've been experimenting, and on my board the system isn't Prime stable below about 1.30 volts. Below 1....

Temperatures
SixToes those temps still seem too high, given your cooling. Is this in a case when you get those temps? Mine is 29c idle and 45c after 10 minutes of prime95.... But I have done the voltage pencil trick and it's currently not in a case. That's measured out of a case, exactly as shown in the picture...

Heatsink swap - Thermalright HR-05 and HR-05 SLI
I've replaced the standard CPU heatsink with a Thermalright HR-05 and the Northbridge heatsink with an HR-05 SLI. Using one of each HR-05 type allows the much larger heatsinks to sit next to each other without overhanging the mainboard or fouling caps/memory/etc.. The only issue was that the Thermal...

Two thumbs up
I just got one of these and I'm really happy with it. It runs 2GB RAM rather than the 1GB Intel advertise, and it also supports unadvertised screen resolutions - I have it at 1680x1050 while I build and test it. With a new XP install it feels quick in everyday use. So far my only reservation is the ...

Thanks again guys. On one local hardware forum people are using AData chips - the cheapest ones here in Estonia; no troubles heard so far (for about a year or so). I've seen this memory at good prices in the UK, so maybe I'll give that a try. my tests showed 800 5,5,5 to be just slightly better than...

Thanks for all the feedback, it's really helpful. The Anand article was exactly what I was looking for and failing to find, and it's great to get feedback from SebRad and EV10, you guys seem to know what you're talking about. I've had a look through eBuyer and these are the modules I'm considering -...

DDR2 and Athlon 64 advice needed
I'm building a new system to be used as a web/VNC/p2p server and media centre in one box. I figure the server tasks can be handled on one core and the media stuff on the other. I'm going for a bang-for-the-buck approach and planning to use these parts: Case - Antec NSK2400 PSU - Seasonic S12 330 Mob...

Do 2.5" drives come in different heights?
I recenly bought a 30Gb IBM Travelstar HD from eBay to replace the 10Gb Travelstar in my old Dell Inspiron 4000 PIII 700. It arrived, I took out the old drive, went to put in the new drive - and it doesn't fit! It seems too high to slide into the enclosure in the side of the Dell. The old drive is s...

Unfortunately (at least for me) it's not just a problem with the latest boards - my Neo HE 380 doesn't play nice with my Abit NF7 nForce2 based system. I'm RMAing it and getting a Seasonic S12 430 instead. It was OK at first, but reducing one of the fan voltages to 5v, removing a fan, removing any t...

Thanks for the feedback! It's ATX rather than mATX - just a small ATX! I'll give it a try without the front fan, although when I had it in a similar configuration but with 80mm fans the HD would get warm, and I'm really paranoid about HD failures. But if it stays below 35 degrees C without the fan t...

Adventures with an Antec Plus660 AMG
This is an Athlon XP 3200+ system in my old Antec Plus660 AMG. I bought the case because it was about the smallest ATX mini tower I could find - which made parts of this process quite difficult! You can click on any of the images to see a bigger version. First, an outer view of the case to show what...

Antec NeoHE 380
My Antec NeoHE 380 experience: The Good: - Amazingly quiet - Modular cabling is great - Seems stable once working, although it's a bit too early to say this The Bad: - I can't undervolt as I could with my TruePower 330. I've had to give CPU, RAM, and chipset more voltage. I'm checking this isn't cau...

Thanks for your feedback everyone! I'm going to go for a 6200, probably the Gigabyte I linked to below because: -I'm probably going to get a new PC before I get an HD display, and it will have PCI-E rather than AGP -It's cheaper than a 9600 or X1300 So has anyone got experience of this card or brand...

Thanks jackylman, I had a look for 6200 information on htpc sites via google and it looks perfect for my needs. Something like this . I'm a little confused about the difference between a 6200, 6200a, and 6200-tc. Does it make a difference to what I need, or should I just stick with a card like the o...

Would the 9250 be powerful enough for what I need?
I had a look at x1300 cards. The Sapphire Radeon X1300 looks good and I think is fanless. Aria have it, so this looks like a good bet.
Does anyone know anything about S3 Chrome S27 based cards?

Please help a video card idiot!
I'm after a new video card to replace my Radeon 7000. As you can tell I'm out of touch with video hardware! I use the PC as a video source, so I need a card powerful enough to decode MPEG4/XVid/DivX. The 7000 is just powerful enough to decode most MPEG4 as long as I drop the screen res to 800X600 an...

From the Ipod's that I have seen they are silent in operation (apart from clicking of the buttons etc). I thought the iPod harddrive spins for only a fraction of the time the machine is working, and the rest of the time it parks the drive and reads from memory? Could be why the ones you've seen see...

I'm not sure whether my Linux distro (Clark Connect) allows me to monitor the HDD temps so I can't report on that for now. I hope it does, as well as CPU temp, but I do have a certain peace of mind knowing that they are 5400 drives. I do have 2 80mm Panaflos intaking air right in front of the drive...

Thanks for the feedback guys! :) you could just get a 600mhz celeron (they are 66fsb).. they use less V than the PIII (ie cooler), and i'd think a 600mhz cel (pIII based) should outperform 450mhz PIII, even with less cache and fsb.. and be cheaper on ebay. I think it will use slightly more power bec...

Underclocking slot 1 PIII on i810
Hi, I'm building a ghetto style super-cheap-all-2nd-hand-off-ebay server based on a MicroStar MS-6183 i810 mobo. It looks like it only supports 100MHz FSB, so my question is this - if I get a PIII600EB (133 MHz FSB) will I be able to run it at 100 MHz FSB (i.e. 450MHz total speed)? I know I could do...

I've been impressed with the 24v M1A running at 12v. According to Dorothy its specs are 17 CFM at 14 dB(A). In my experience its certainly much quieter than an L1A at 12v and still moves a reasonable amount of air. An L1A at 5v seems about as loud but seems to move a bit less air. The 24M1A will als...
