Re: ASUS Z87-Deluxe fake 4-pin headers & other fan control info

Which Windows? Mu guess is some software (more likely) is trying to control the fans or Windows itself (less likely) is screwing them up by doing something in the ACPI side of things. Try to see if you've installed and forgotten some fan-controlling software, have some old MB software laying around ...

I didn't notice there were new articles until I red the replies here. But the new articles are disappointing, to say the least. I agree with other replies. Seems Eric decided to do exactly this: [quote]However, were you to take that route you say above, this site would become just another generic PC...

Re: New SPCR design & management

Hi Eric, It is partially true what you say, as indeed, something like 10+ years ago, many components were noisy. Quietness was something which was sometimes not considered at all, or sacrificed at the cost of more noise. Perhaps most manufacturers were still thinking they are mainly building for gam...

I think some posts have gone missing. I remember a few posts which are now missing in the SPCR Folds Team Blog -thread. However nothing too important.

The frontpage looks impressive now. Good job with the visuals on the site! Also, exciting to see something changing on the site :)

Re: Cooling research

Hi AgentX! The product should in some clear way improve on current cooling products. You've only mentioned the new product would not have a pump. That is too little information to go on and to determine if it is actually a viable / useful as a product. And ideal PC cooling product would be: 1) quiet...

My guess would be something resonating. I have 4 mechanical HDDs (and one SSD) in my computer. All HDDs are mounted in a rubber feeted holder and rubber inserts around their screws (Lian-Li DK-04) - and spin down if not in use. But last week one of the HDD started to resonate trough something ... in...

Re: GPU watercooling?

Hi Abula, Yes, my Setup is inaudible in a quiet room, if under light(ish) load. But under medium-high load such as folding, it is audible, but certainly not intrusive - as in, one could sleep in the same room, sounds from outside might drown this thing and people have (often) a more noisier refriger...

Exactly. I believe the pump housing still (despite the impeller being suspended) still resonates somewhat (I guess depending on the speed of the impeller and the pump housing and possibly individual pump / batch / manufacturing tolerances and whatnot - also, just sheer water turbulence could cause s...

I've noticed something similar about the pump speed on my rad. The response is quite steep compared to traditional cooler + fan, but this is just a rough impression I've noticed - haven't done any kind of testing / measurements trying to be objective. There certainly is some RPM at which flow is com...

Re: Why Intel Processors Draw More Power Than Expected

No, absolutely not. To take a real world example, the thermal power of a nuclear power plant is usually about three times its electrical power. Your comparison is irrelevant and incorrect. A power plant converts thermal energy into electricity. Any kind of electric appliance does not, but does the ...

Re: GPU watercooling?

What's the current state of GPU liquid cooling and why the apparent lack of discussion on it? I'm not sure why there is quite a little discussion. A few guesses: Most gamer-oriented users don't care about quietness? Most GPUs (or chosen cards) are quiet when not gaming (i.e. light usage / desktop),...

Re: GPU watercooling?

Water cooling is generally not the best way to a quiet computer as a pump will always make some noise and this applies to graphics cooling too. Water cooling can be way more expensive than air cooling (and probably is EDIT: I meant to say, I haven't done any kind of extensive comparisons, this is j...

Re: Is it worth considering a fanless CPU cooler?

A fan (at low RPM) is better than no fan at all. A proper fan at low RPM is also very quiet or inaudible. For anything running 24/7 I'd not run it passively (unless your components are engineered to be run passively). But that CPU and MB is not meant to be run passively. It's not just about the CPU,...

Re: Potential Cause of Coil/Electrical Whine in GPUs Under L

If you can hear it to the other room, you must have been experiencing some very exceptional electric noise! Perhaps caused by poor contacts at the slot (caused by the mechanical stress). That being said it is unlikely this will help users experiencing regular coil whine. Still, there could be users ...

Having just now (~30 minutes ago) red about these fans, are you sure you are running them on PWM (and not fake PWM ) ? Last time I checked software mentioned in the lm-sensors wikipedia page, they are all for monitoring only. I believe few GUI options exist for controlling fan speed. Re: [250D vs Node 304] airflow in a small, quiet workstation

According to the SCPR review, the fans spin up at 600 rpm, which they said was pretty quiet. With the C14S it'd lose the opportunity to put a fan right at the intake vent, and to use two fans. Would that really be worth the tradeoff? The original C14 must date back at least five to six years and li...

Re: [250D vs Node 304] airflow in a small, quiet workstation

The NH-C14S cooler with PWM fan would be a better match for the motherboard. The older NH-C14 with its 3-pin fans would be more of a challenge noise-wise. It will fit if the fan is placed underneath the cooler rather than on top. Though that way it won't blow the mobo. Maybe I'm missing something, but I believe it does, unless the installer does not change the orientation (it can be changed in any case)! I own the NH-C14 and per default the fan(s) wi...

What others said - it's true :D However I want to add that there certainly are badly designed cases out there. For example, it makes sense to put the PS so that the air is pushing away from the case. Or, more generally in air-cooled cases, design the case so that air has a sensible path from fresh a...
