Re: Case fan RPM's and diminishing returns
Yes, there is a point of diminishing returns, often severely so. You have to exhaust a nearly-fixed number of Watts (cooler devices use less power, but the difference is not big). With a lower bound for cool air (a few degrees above room ambient), any given heatsink will only be able to reach up to ...

Re: Wich CPU cooler for me ?
With the D15, be careful about your space. It may use up your first PCie slot, block RAM, make the P4 connector or fan headers hard to get to, etc.. The Macho can do the same with P4 and fan headers, but will clear RAM and expansion slots just fine. The Kotestsu is probably the best overall option, ...

Re: Quiet CPU cooler and RAM clearance
If you don't put the fan on the front of the heatsink, the Macho should have plenty of clearance on any LGA1150 board, and IME, performs quite well with just a case exhaust fan right behind it, or with the fan pulling.

No. It's an awkward design, and should end up no better than the Corsair Air.
The Fractal Design Node are probably the best choice, with sufficiently quiet drives.

1. This may be difficult, unless you use exactly the parts soeone else has, that measured that way. But, keeping max power use reasonable won't be hard at all. At low power use, losses in the PSU and voltage regs onboard can be hefty. Or , you can use a notebook, but noise may be hard to control. 2....

Re: Easiest, simplest micro-ATX to build silent PC in?
if you do, i would suggest to consider Nexus Basic 120s or Scythe Gentle Typhoons or Noctua Redux NF-S12B or Noiseblockers M12-S1/2. Having used the NF-S12A PWM in that case, for Noctuas (which are far cheaper in the U.S. than Noiseblockers), the NF-P12 PWM is the way to go for the intakes. It's to...

The ASRock utility reported down to 85 RPM w/ the S12A at 10% w/ the resistor (I don't recall for the P12s), and 0% makes them stop moving. Re: help me to choose a silent case
1080P in software will be no problem, for the foreseeable future (including new codecs), with anything above a Pentium. Common codecs that may be CPU-intensive have decoding done in hardware, though, so use very little CPU, most of the time. If your budget isn't too tight, an i5-4460 through i5-4590...

I concur. You might even go with an i3, for something more likely to last just as long all over again, for barely more than the AMDs.
That said, of those AMDs, the A8-7600 is the best all-around choice.

Notes: - CPU Fan 1 (4-pin) and Chassis Fan 1 (4-pin) cannot be turned off. Even at 0% they will keep spinning at the minimum rpm. Interesting. On my B85M Pro4, I can set mine down to off, with Noctua NF-P12 and NF-S12A. Around 5% or so, they will start and stop, not being able to keep up the duty c...

Bigger means more surface area, and needing lower RPMs.
In a full sized case, I see no reason to not get a cooler made for 120mm or larger fans.

Pardon me, but what's to "delid"? It's the removal of the CPU IHS in order to substitute the thermal interface material: http://www.silentpcreview.com/IvyBridge_3770K_IHS_removal_and_results But, Devil's Canyon has better TIM, so it wouldn't be as much of a difference, on top of the procedure being...

1) I assume the die is same sized in both the 4790 and 4790K, right? Yes. All of the Devil's Canyon desktop Core i5, Core i7, and Xeon E3 CPUs are identical. The diferences are entirely features and binning. 2) I guess as long as everything is installed properly, condition 2 will not exist, correct...

Does some gaming include a video card? If so, and the extra speed may not be worth it, look at dropping down to near i5 costs, with a Xeon E3-1231V3.

Point well made re the i7-S,T etc, if they all use the same power when idling, then I guess the question is whether I wish to max out the power at 65W or 84W. Or higher, if you like. I run my 80W CPU with a 100W max, because it doesn't seem to hurt anything for it to use a bit more than spec when s...

If it's just a little extra work to replace the data, rather than a ton of work or impossible (such as files changing often), then sure, just archive them, par them, and check the pars every now and then. If redoing Linux boxes anew, I'd go with BTRFS, though, provided you're using a distro with a f...

Re: backup to guard against bit rot.
Git will not protect you from the bit rot, but it can allow you to detect it, if the file checksums have changed, but the data has not. If the data has also changed, there's no way to tell corruption like that so simply. You also have to be looking for it. With BTRFS or ZFS, you may find it, but you...

As I understand it, the ones without the K still have turbo option which enables it to overclock to 3.9GHz, so if you only want to overclock i5 4690K to 4GHZ, it doesn't really make sense to buy the K one? .. You might do just fine with IGP. For desktop-only work, it's generally large resolutions that get you. Intel can only do 4k at 60Hz over Displayport, for example, and is even then known to be a bit sluggish, sometimes, just pushing all those pixels. For photo/video type work, or light 3D modeling, a...

It's been years since I bought a graphics card, so I must be a bit out of date, but a question comes to mind: Is this coil whine really so bad that it is audible above any fan and game noise? That's pretty bad, especially given that the issue only seems to show up under heavy load. Sorry for the n0...

Single high-end GPU is too variable. Stock v. stock, a single GTX 980 could use 100W or more less than a R9 290X (counting common models often over GPU maker's speed specs at "stock"). I paid a bit less than the EVGA 750W's cost for a fanless 500W. I doubt I'll ever reach more than 250W from the wal...
