Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
In true Windows fashion, problem resolved itself after doing a restart on the host. I guess with the various game installations I'd been doing, a restart was in the books. Going to try a couple of gaming sessions tonight and over the weekend, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to avoid putting in a c...

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
I did some testing last night with This War of Mine and Cities: Skyline using my gaming/photo editing PC as a host and my 2012 Macbook (wireless) and the HTPC (powerline wired). The games ran fine, it seems like a completely doable setup. Unfortunately, I wasn't getting any audio on my clients, desp...

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
If you only plan to play Steam games, then yeah, having a gaming PC elsewhere and using either this HTPC or Steam Link would be the way to go. I haven't tried the in-home streaming, yet. The beta reviews implied it worked well if on a wired network. If using wifi, then it's as good as your wifi rec...

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
At this point, the only thing that's on the immediate horizon that I would want to play in the living room is Cities: Skylines . An R7 250 should slightly exceed the minimum requirements for the game, especially since I'd only be playing at 1080p. My initial concern would be that, as you pointed out...

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
CA_Steve, you were certainly right about them responding quickly. Got a response today, that card is 5.5" x 2.5" x 1.25". As suspected, too wide!
At this point it looks like my options are down to the R7 250 single slot type cards.

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
Just e-mailed them to get official confirmation, but it's not looking good. I found a listing on amazon.ca for this card. According to that listing, it's 3cm wide which is just over 1". We'll see what Zotac says but it might be back to the drawing board!

Re: Low profile, narrow video card options
I'm really glad I measured things out, as it turns out, I had misread the Silverstone documentation. So the measurements are as follows: Length: 7.5" is the absolute maximum. Would prefer a little bit shorter to leave a bit more room for simpler cable management, if necessary. I'm running a power ca...

Re: Low profile, single slot video card options
When you say single slot...do you mean it can't have the additional width for the connector plate or that there is no room for a cooler that uses up part or all of a 2nd slot? If the former, you could step up to a GTX 750. Zotac has a single slot plate / 2 slot cooler solution. If the latter, then ...

Low profile, narrow video card options
Hey folks, A while ago, I put together a mini-ITX HTPC built around a Silverstone ML-06B case (details are at http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=68169). When putting together the HTPC, I always left the door open on potentially adding a discrete video card. Well, that time has...

Re: Silent HTPC build (Silverstone ML06B case, Intel i3)
Agreed, I think PCPartPicker is probably pretty pessimistic about additional power draws beyond the CPU.CA_Steve wrote:54W TDP CPU and maybe 40W for everything else. So, closer to 94W with stressed load rather than 113W.

Re: Silent HTPC build (Silverstone ML06B case, Intel i3)
I haven't measured anything, but PCPartPicker indicates a maximum draw of 113W. Obviously, playing media would be nowhere near that.

Re: Silent HTPC build (Silverstone ML06B case, Intel i3)
Ah yes, probably because I have the images set as private on my Flickr stream. I'll see if there's a way of fixing that (without making the shots public, heh). I was initially going to attach the images to my post, but there seems to be a limit of 3 attachments, hence why I went the hosted route.

Silent HTPC build (Silverstone ML06B case, Intel i3)
Hey folks, I know many of you enjoy build posts, so I've put together a quick post regarding my latest build, a replacement for my old HTPC. This build will be mostly used for playing media from my NAS as well as streaming. I've left a little bit of a window open for some future light gaming if need...

Re: Case fan control using Asus Fan Xpert I
Do you think I'm safe to try SpeedFan without uninstalling Fan Xpert I (assuming of course I terminate any Fan Xpert processes before trying SpeedFan)? It would certainly be a bit more straightforward to test that way without installing/reinstalling a number of times.

You mentioned in your first post that you're looking to build OR buy a NAS. However, your post is largely focused on building a NAS. While I like tinkering and building machines as much as the next guy, have you actually looked into off the shelf NAS units? There are quite a large number that would ...

Re: How ya like the Mugen 4?
Everything said in the reviews is true, as well as the opinions that others have shared regarding the Mugen 4. I've had one for a couple of months now in my new rig and it's been excellent so far. Even when my video card is spun down, I don't hear the CPU cooler. I'm very happy with the investment I...

Case fan control using Asus Fan Xpert I
Hey folks, I'm having a little bit of a hard time setting up a case fan control profile using Asus Fan Xpert (not II). Blast from the past CPU Cooler
I was doing some cleaning of some old hardware I've got laying around and came across this bad boy. This is actually just some of the leftover parts for it as the cooler itself is sitting in my HTPC. I thought some of you folks might get a kick out of now nearly ancient cooler ;) Anyone else got old...

Quick update, in case anyone is following and/or stumbles on this in the future. I replaced the memory with the Ares line, and have ple...

Thanks, folks. Things now stand at: i5-4570 (or maybe i5-4670... if I'm already overkilling, what's another $20 of overkill?) MSI Z87M-G43 (at $100, only $20 more than ASRock H87's) G.SKILL Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) Samsung 840 Evo... still thinking about what size. If you're going to...

Re: PSU orientation and its effect on establishing airflow
Thanks for the confirmation, folks. I'm glad that I was on the ball with my assertion of how to handle this. Just wanted to double check as none of my previous cases ever had this sort of an additional air intake (even my previous Solo cases).

PSU orientation and its effect on establishing airflow
I'm posting this here as it isn't specific to PSUs, or fans, but rather, a combination of both. My latest build is built around an Antec Solo II , which includes a air intake cutout on top of the case (towards the back). You can clearly see this if you have a look at any pictures. This air intake is...

Re: Best Heatsink, cost not a consideration?
I have to admit, I did anticipate heat going AMD though, because gamers like AMD , and most gamers could care less about heat and noise. Gamers do care about performance though, and game performance is an area where AMD hasn't done very well in for a while now. Unfortunately, you ended up with a pr...

Fan clip installation on Scythe Mugen 4 (or similar design)
I'm starting to put together my latest build and this will be the first time I'm using a CPU Cooler that utilizes the type of fan clips found in a Scythe Mugen 4 to mate the fan to the heatsink assembly. Yes, it's been a few years since I built a machine and the coolers I've used before had differen...
