Re: Bay-trail motherboards

Gigabyte's highest spec Gemini Lake board is this: https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/J4105N-H-rev-10#kf The CPU is almost as good as the J5005, just slower GPU peak clock and fewer execution units. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=128984,128989 I can't find a...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

The latest low power chips from Intel, Gemini Lake, are pretty good but in short supply. Gigabyte have a dual NIC apollo lake board, but haven't released a Gemini Lake version probably for that reason. For a home theatre pc I bought a "June Canyon" J5005 NUC. An excellent bit of kit, the optical spd...

Re: WD Green vs. WD Red for quietness?

I built a home file server with the Gigabyte GA-J1900D3V and a pair of WD Red 3TB drives, and more recently bought a Lenovo TS140 "server" and fitted that with a second drive, also a WD Red 3TB.

I wouldn't say the drives are particularly noisy, the fans in the TS140 drown out all the other sounds.

Re: new bios for Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V baytrail-D board

yes, it's too easy to slip back to old naming especially when the vendor plays fast and loose. I think when I did it, that I used the gigabyte flashing tool running on Win8.1 to flash both of them, once I was happy that the F3 flashed firmware was working. Given the F1 version was so bad, I figured...

Re: new bios for Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V baytrail-D board

My system is in use 24x7 as a firewall and fileserver, runs opensuse x64 I am using the default kernel version, 3.11. I did try a newer one not long after installing, 3.14 I think, but there were network issues with the kernel, not tried since because of the role of the box. It's fairly stable, cras...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards

The thing that sinks pretty much all of these board for my consideration is their limit of just two onboard SATA headers. IMO, SoC from Intel isn't _quite_ there yet, so I'll pass. Maybe the next generation. apart from this one: http://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/motherboard/celeron/X10/X10SBA.cf...

Phoronix just compared the Windows vs Linux GPU performance http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_nuc_windows81&num=1 the Windows drivers are consistently better by a modest margin over the Linux ones, however, it's not a total disaster. meanwhile my Gigabyte J1900 motherboard has...

Re: new bios for Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V baytrail-D board

In the end I succumbed to installing Win8.1 (used the generic activation key that gives you a few day's grace, see below). Even the 32 bit version didn't run after installing, so I had to install the 64 bit. That then broke the EfiFlash.exe program, so then I tried the @BIOS app. The "@BIOS" updater...

Re: new bios for Gigabyte GA-J1900N-D3V baytrail-D board

I received my board yesterday and am now having the "exciting" challenge of updating its BIOS. Re: Bay-trail motherboards

My only concern is, whether to buy Athlon 5350 + AsRock board for almost same price. AMD seems to offer faster storage and 4K output for video. That depends on whether you're going to have to compromise too much on power consumption, and whether you're going to find stable video drivers for the AMD...

Perhaps it is not compatible with standard PXE, (different ports?) since it is a UEFI implementation? hm, so far I have fought a few battled with UEFI and only recently begun to win them! I've not tried UEFI PXE boot, chances are it's buggy on the Gigabyte F1 bios. All I can offer is this: https://...

I believe the F1 bios in the Gigabyte board J1900 and j1800 are hopeless, and you'll need to upgrade. People have been reporting they won't boot without a monitor connected, perhaps they mean VGA?

Thanks gorkypl, very useful.
No mention if any bios issues at all, so maybe it's just gigabyte who screwed up their board.
