Wide HDTV - It simply isn't all that wide.
When I view a movie on a 16:9 set it fills the screen. Is this good? It depends. 16:9 in cinema terms works out to 1.777778:1. Now this is very close to 1.85:1 which some movies are filmed in, you won't be missing much. However, many of my movies are 2.35:1. In computer terms that works out to over ...

As someone with tinnitus I'd rather listen to the sounds of silence, both the original/natural version and later the Simon & Garfunkel version.

No editing, no time compression, no commercials, so why not? Often I can view a whole movie quicker on DVD than I can view the edited version elsewhere.

Re: Ergonomics LED vs. CCFL?
Prad.de is the best, but yeah their total number of reviews are low. And they review many professional items that are way out of normal budget range. Most disappointing thing about LED over CCFL is that brightness consistency and light bleeding have not improved with the change over. Second disappoi...

Ergo, Nexus 7 32GB plus accident coverage = $350. I can get a Kindle 8.9 32GB for that kind of money. A little less flexible in some ways, a little more in other ways.
Apparently the Nexus 7 doesn't want to play with USB On The Go. Don't care for that.

Look at those individual coffee containers you put in the machine. The at home price is $1+ per cup, the grocery store shows prices exceeding $30/pound. For a trivial amount of convenience, jeez I am part of one dumb species. No thanks by the way.

Monitors, like TVs, are way too bright right out of the box . They are set up to seem correct on a Best Buy floor, flooded by other lights. If your monitor has been reviewed by TFT Central or that German web site they should have some recommendations for initial settings. My latest NEC IPS LED monit...

Re: ASUS Com Service (atkexComSvc.exe) Memory Leak
Once Asus gets their act together they make a great product. If and when they manage to reach that stage is an entirely different beast. Run like the wind from their version 1.0 (or lower) motherboards. The Nexus 7, which they build, has more than ample teething problems. One of them was(?) spontane...

When green makes you see red. BD players.
Well the latest BD players are out, and they use less energy than before. Why? No analogue video outputs, no analog audio outputs. Guess what? I don't want to turn on a fancy receiver for most shows, I just want sound from the TV. The end result? Those that do turn on their receivers will use more e...

This is why I don't believe the "work ethic" even exists. Most companies today simply want to rebrand (or initially brand) something cheap with a huge profit margin. A glorified get rich quick scheme.
Of course the lower wage workers need a work ethic, to be profitable for their bosses.

This made sound silly, but I'm fascinated by the white Kindle with an actual keyboard. The larger unit is $250, frankly in spitting distance of the full fledged Kindle HD 8.9. I am annoyed the 7 inch Kindle gets a 16GB flash upgrade for $50, while the 8.9 inch model the same upgrade is $70. On the N...

@aristide1: yes, planned obsolescence is becoming ubiquitous. It's just the way things happen to be working these days. We exploit the huge labor cost differences from one nation to the next to make money. Some companies seem like they have great service, in reality the stuff they sell is so low co...

Re: Death of The PC or You're Just a Consumer
My personal pet peeve at the moment is the whole planned obsolescence. Batteries cannot be exchanged by the user (some are even glued in) and the stupidly fast progression of (phone) operating systems make perfectly functional hardware worthless. This is small scale. On the latest Hyundais there is...

To be fair the consumer/citizen is the target of massive propaganda. Re: Death of The PC or You're Just a Consumer
If however people actually made sensible purchasing decisions rather than going allong with marketing then there would be no requirement for over hyped marketing. Capitalism is based on the belief that consumers make decisions on the margin. From this I gather the definition of capitalism is flawed...

Re: Death of The PC or You're Just a Consumer
The problem lies solely with the consumer. Anyone who was into high-end audio would be the first to tell you the average consumer puts convenience and instant gratification above all else. Sound quality is a secondary issue, if at all. More like if it passes the "good enough" test then the people ar...

Best Options for CompTIA Network+ & later CEH certifications
Hey, Well after reading a 1200 page book my Michael Myers (yes the whole thing), taking several on-line practice exams (all outdated) and then actually purchasing a practice exam I managed to pass my CompTIA A+ certification. I was not pleased with my grade, given my prior experience, and the amount...

I've been using BitDefender for a while now. The latest version caused me issues. I could not log onto FaceBook and I had trouble logging into NewEgg to buy stuff. Just curious, anyone running folding PCs at 240Volts AC?
I ask this question because most PS's seem to have slightly better efficiency at the higher voltage. I've never actually seen an IEC cord designed for 240VAC. Oh, and Happy New Year. OT - At some point I will reconsider folding, because my electric rate is 12 cents an hour. I had not noticed for a l...

Wealth has purchased something that is both expensive and time consuming - We as a national have been wholely divided (oxymoron #1). Misguidance is hardly the way to do business. Even if it is my mistake what did it get them? And the default shou...

I leave notes on the front door for the delivery person to leave the box at the back door. Thieves will grab a box if they see it, but seldom are motivated enough to read a notice hanging in clear view.

All I wanted was the latest Flash Player. Without asking, let alone permission, I also get Google Chrome and toolbar. Why do I have to put time and effort into removing them? It's simple you say? Actually it's not, because after I removed them the URL association was no longer present on my PC, I co...
