Like top tier, but Bronze/semi and cheaper?

There are many great options around $110-120 (@Northern Europe), if I were to pay that much I might choose EVGA G3 550W or Seasonic G550 . However while I'm willing to pay for top tier (ish) quality (reliability, stability), I don't need the best efficiency or fully modular cables, and feel that suc...

Re: Skylake ready, good-enough low power ATX PSU

Back with report: Went with Seasonic G360 and it has been running for a few days now. DVI signal has been stable since, and there are no more problems related to sleep mode or unwanted wake up - it works as expected. Asus automatic overclocking is still black magic and sometimes says "Overclocking f...

Thanks, then I'll go for the Seasonic. It says in the review here that it has multiple ATX12V that combine into an EPS12V, too, so that's great.

Skylake ready, good-enough low power ATX PSU

I built a new Skylake rig for a family member, initially reusing an old case with a 6 years old, crappy PSU: LiteOn PS-5221-06, 220W, TFX. I would like to replace this PSU and am considering a few different options. First, there are currently some issues: with sleep states, such as spontaneous boot ...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

This is all very Interesting. The Carbide Air 240 was pretty hyped a while back and reviews seem very positive. But maybe it would be better suited for a dual-GPU-overclocked-i7 kind of setup, than what I'm going for... Next suggestion : Thermaltake Core V1 . Replace huge fan with quieter (?) Noctua...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

... cooling wise that Carbide 240 would seem rather mediocre. It might not be ideal, but with 7 (!) slots for 120mm fans and no PSU or disk cage blocking that airflow, it already has more potential than most. It is very open indeed, I just haven't seen a mITX case that does this better. That TT wou...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

Of all the cases mentioned so far, the best candidate for this would be the Corsair Carbide Air 240. It is a high airflow case which partly explains its larger size. Used with a Asus STRIX it would delay the point at which the fans triggered. And if the fans did start to run it would help to keep t...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

TJ08-E PS07 Aquila Core V1 The Carbide Air 240 doesn't look so attractive anymore. :P But if that's a bit too large - which I do agree with - then the same goes for TJ08-E, PS07 and the Aquila. Something smaller would be nice. Somewhere around 20 liters - smaller than most of the mentioned cases, b...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

I would pick the TJ08-E for a quiet system. This case looks interesting. I'll have to check if the 180mm fan is quiet enough and replaceable. Also I think they top exhaust for the PSU is weird and I wish it came without 5.25" drive slots. But I'll consider this one, you're right that the Carbide Ai...

Re: SFF gaming rig on a budget

What's the reason behind the choice of the Carbide 240? It's sort of small but should provide better airflow than most small cases (5x 120mm slots + dual-chamber design), while also being quite cheap. My own Coolcube eventually required making a hole and adding an external fan, so I thought I'd go ...

SFF gaming rig on a budget

Re: Why the lack of talk on Haswell undervolting

If anyone has a link to a guide explaining all of this, that would be awesome. I don't think there's ever been a lot of info on undervolting, and it's even less with Haswell. If you find such a guide, please share it here. My interest over the years has been getting the best of both worlds between ...

Re: Why the lack of talk on Haswell undervolting

Useful or not, I can say that the Asus Z97I supports undervolting, without a lower limit as far as I can tell. There is auto, manual, adaptive and offset mode. It is more complicated since both the CPU and stuff on the motherboards adjust voltages automatically. Hard to predict how these things will...

Re: Advice needed - reasonably small PC with graphics card

I finally decided to cut a 120mm hole in the top plate. Sure it would "spoil" the pretty case, but who needs a pretty case that can't be cooled? Let's see how it went. Previously my CPU cores peaked at 82-83 deg C when maxing both CPU and integrated graphics for 30+ minutes. Take 1 : Take the thin 1...

Hi gaidal, how are you getting on with reducing temperatures? Hey, thanks for checking in with me... :-) I guess I've been a bit meh about it since it's just about good enough, and it's not obvious how to improve it... Re: Advice needed - reasonably small PC with graphics card

Try to go with a similar speced fan on the PSU ... I'll stick with this one, I think the CFM wasn't that much lower and several people have had it for a year without problems. I didn't know that it doubled as a crucial exhaust fan for the case, but hopefully I can solve that. At least it's really q...

Re: Advice needed - reasonably small PC with graphics card

I modded the PSU with the quiet fan, and noise-wise it's a big improvement - however instead of getting warm the case now gets so hot that it's uncomfortable to touch, not far from burning my hand... Yes, really. :o I didn't expect that only a CPU could cause this much heat! I think the PSU itself i...

Re: Advice needed - reasonably small PC with graphics card

I don't think the PSU is that bad, and the Shuriken 2 seems pretty capable without being a tower... :-) But since I'm about to change the PSU placement fan to one with less airflow and the air coming out is already sort of warm... I should probably do something to improve it. Maybe I could fasten th...
