Re: GTX 1030 Video Decode Disapointment

There should be 4K samples that you can download and use as test, Kodi has a page with samples in its Wiki. If a 4K HEVC/H.265 clip plays without problem then your HW decoder is working. The 1030 has HW decode but no HW ENcode, if HW decode is working on local 4K media and a 1080 an online video stu...

Re: GTX 1030 Video Decode Disapointment

Do you have problem playing local contents using same codec and resolution as online streams? Check that first, if local contents play OK, fault is somewhere along the online stream.

This one pushes it regularly to 100% on various parts of the video at 4K, sometimes there are stutters at even 1080p Quick Google on the 1030 specs shows that playback should not be a problem: https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?t...

AmazonBasic 50ft CAT6 cable goes for something like $12. Get one and see if it makes a difference in your game play. If it makes no difference, return it.

Yeah, everything's a compromise, but we have an enclosed kitchen and we do a lot of steaming, so its a no-no for computers.

not sure if a drive was defective but its noisy. I think it's the chassis. I have a 2 bay cousin of that QNAP with the same caddy system. I can hear the 6TB Ironwolfs I have there too -- the caddy is attached to the chassis by plastic latches, no damping anywhere. The 10TB Ironwolf is in a Antec 18...

Re: Is a NAS worth it for a single user?

Is there a way to have the NAS be at the same time silent and appropriately cooled? Sure it's possible, operating max temp for many WD NAS drives is 65C and for Seagate 70C. And usually the only thing that'll drive up the CPU load/temp in a media/home automation server is video transcoding and that...

Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

Nearly a year on. . . has anything improved? I can't hear any difference between the Ironwolf 10Tb I bought recently and the 8TBs I bought a year(?) ago. Only difference I've noticed doesn't affect noise, and mainly of interest to people running RAID 5, Seagate seems to have upped the URE spec for ...

I imagine after 8 years they probably make more noise than they could. If it's noisier than before then you probably need to lubricate them -- it may work with some fans, not with others. If you want to get rid of *all* the dirt, take them out, blow off surface dirt with compress air and then clean...

I forgot to add that BTRFS or ZFS and encryption will be used on this. ZFS works best with ECC RAM and lots of it (1GB per TB of storage), and you'll need a UPS. With encryption you'll need something more than a celeron. What's your budget? 1x 3.5" Seagate Skyhawk, there's some possibility this wil...

Not only usage is different but those HGST models have not been in production for a few years. For all we know with the change of ownership and WD selling off parts of HGST to Tosh, curren...

Bought HGST 3TB last year... the 3TB version is no longer available. You're going with HGST drives because of the Backblaze reliability report? Note that the HGST models used by Backblaze haven't been produced for a few years and the majority of those were enterprise drives. While the Backblaze rep...

If you don't mind Nvidia I think Palit has a Geforce 1050Ti that is fanless with a HDMI and displayport. I haven't done it for a long time but you may want to look into whether dual graphics cards will work for you. Much easier (and cheaper) to find fanless UHD cards with single HDMI. Lastly I think...

What CPU are you using? And which 4K - UHD (3840) or DCI (4096)? I think LG offers both.

For UHD the IGP on Haswell and later should be fine, just check the mobo has the necessary connectors.

With DCI you'll need Skylake and later.

I have an HDMI port I could use to add a third. If I have more than one high resolution (over 1900x1200 or 1080p) then I'll have to get a separate graphics card to be able to handle them. Intel's integrated graphics will handle 3 x 4K monitors fine. But to do that you need to daisy chain the monito...
