Re: GTX 1070 Review Compilation Thread

I purchased the EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW GAMING ACX 3.0 yesterday. Even though most of the reviews I had seen were for the SC, the price difference was minimal and in theory the slightly bigger heat sink and fans should only make it better. I don't think it is displaying any signs of coil whine bu...

Re: Case for gaming PC, Silent but cool

Corsair 600Q user here. 6700k / single GTX1070 setup, couldn't be more happy. Limited support for mechanical hard drives but I went all SSD so that wasn't a concern of mine. 600Q comes with two fans installed (one intake, one exhaust) and a third fan in the package. I did not like the sound of the f...

Re: Mistakenly bought PWM case fans. Options?

Except FanXpert doesn't let you choose which temperature probe is used to set the fan control. That is its only flaw against an aging Speedfan. I can't comment on FanXpert but the ASUS UEFI lets you specify which sensor to use for each fan. The only flaw is that there isn't really a good sensor to ...

Re: Updated 120/140mm intake fan suggestions?

I have the bigger Corsair 600Q and also was not fond of the stock fans. In the end I replaced them with Fractal Design Venturi HP-14 fans. I went with the HP-14 fans because they received better reviews than the high airflow version (HF-14). Some people recommend static pressure fans for your intake...

Re: GTX 1070 Review Compilation Thread

My EVGA 1070 FTW has no audible coil whine. And it overclocks to 2.1GHz. I will check the power settings for overclocking. I have not even installed an overclocking utility yet and I am not sure I need to. When I ran Unigine Valley it boosted up to 2012Mhz and, as far as I can tell, stayed there fo...

Re: GTX 1070 Review Compilation Thread

In the interests of full disclosure, the ambient temperature listed in my previous post probably dropped a decent amount the further into the night I went. My testing is not very scientific. Normally I would go with ASUS but I don't really like the decision to move a 3 fan cooler. The Gainwar...

Re: Gaming build

If you want to keep an optical drive and don't need all the drive bays of the R5 you could also consider the Corsair 600Q. I believe it is more expensive than the other cases listed though and the stock fans are not as good as the Fractal stock fans.

Re: New Build Based On Quiet ATX Gamer

Just installed the replacement fans today, 3 Fractal Design Venturi HP-14 PWM fans, 2 as front intakes and 1 rear exhaust. I must say that with no scientific testing, my subjective opinion is that I am very pleased with the result. I can barely tell that the computer is on at idle with my noise floo...

What is considered a safe value for CPU spin up time? Right now I have it at 2.1 seconds which is the lowest value except for zero. I wouldn't want to run for too long without adequate cooling.

Re: Fractal r5 case fans and more

I think the article you need is the Quiet ATX Gamer, R5 Version . In the article he mentions that the stock R5 fan (GP-14) is at least as quiet as the Antec TrueQuiet 140. He also tested with both 2 and 3 fans and found that when mounted in the front of the case the third fan produced a positive res...

Re: New Build Based On Quiet ATX Gamer

Well, the good news is that I am posting this message from the new computer. After rebuilding the computer the restarts and surge warnings were still there so I had the power supply replaced and that seems to have done the job. The USB issue is a little weird but I can work with it. It seems that my...

Re: New Build Based On Quiet ATX Gamer

You can check is to see if your Asus mobo s/w is messing with the stock CPU voltage and clock. Sometimes there is an autodefault to OC...or sometimes they just set the core voltage higher. What's the CPU idle temp? So upon further investigation, the reason my CPU is running at 4.2GHz is because of ...

That's good to know. How is it performing? Is it a worthwhile upgrade from the stock Kotetsu fan?

If you did not have access to the Phanteks fans or wanted to use a more traditional fan with the standard 140mm mounts, what would you recommend? Suggestions I have seen so far are: Noctua NF-A14 PWM ( iPPC-2000 version if you are not a fan of brown) Noctua NF-P14s Redux-1200 PWM Antec TrueQuiet 140...

Re: Replacement fans for Scythe Kotetsu and Fractal Define R

I was thinking about getting a Fractal Design Venturi HP-12 fan as replacement for the Kotetsu stock fan but when I took a closer look I noticed that the fan clips use the inner screw hole rather than the outer screw hole. The rubber corner mount of the Venturi fans has the channel for the screw com...

Re: Fractal intro's Define Nano S Mini-ITX

I assume Fractal Design is one of the manufacturers that provides SPCR with samples to review. I remember reading a review of the Core 500 in the not too distant past. I think overall I would still prefer to do a mini-ITX build in the Core 500 but this case may still be worth a look as the Define Mi...

Re: Quiet 4K Gaming PC Build Guide

In the original Carbide 600Q review you said that adding the third case fan did not provide a noticeable improvement over the stock configuration. Just wondering why you went with 3 case fans this time around? Was it to compensate for the smaller exhaust fan that had to be used? Or is it the case th...

Re: New Build Based On Quiet ATX Gamer

After reconsidering the reviews and finding no strong opinions in this thread, I am leaning towards trying the Corsair Carbide Quiet 600Q. My logic is that it appears to have better cooling potential with the possibly of using less case fans. Also all the drive cages of the R5 are wasted on this bui...

CPU: Core i5 I5-6600K 3.5 GHz Universally recommended so seems a nobrainer. Yep, a Core i5 K Series CPU is on pretty much every gaming build guide I have read. If you can live without overclocking support you could also go for a non-K series 6600. Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo This is what ...

After further reading it seems like all of my concerns about building in the Core 500 can be overcome. In the TechPowerUp Review they use a power supply with the plug in the most awkward orientation and they also did a good job with the cable routing too, all things considered. The m.2 card behind t...

CPU: Are you likely to do extreme overclocking? If not, a non-K CPU will suffice. They can still overclock but are not unlocked. For gaming use an i7 is pretty useless but I assume that your VM use may be pretty multithread heavy hence the i7? If I am completely honest, I have had K series CPUs in ...

New Build Based On Quiet ATX Gamer

Some new components have been released since the guide was written and I live in New Zealand so component availability is always an issue ...
