Re: Time for a new silent PC? What to keep? What to replace? What to rethink?

- Does the case (Fractal Design Define R6 USB-C) have any light indicating if the pc is turned on/off or hibernating? - Would someone consider replacing the case fans with beQuiet fans or would they just be as loud/quite? The power button has a blue indicator light, which will flash on standby/flut...

Re: Time to update from 2011

Intel’s architecture being super old isn’t directly relevant, what matters is performance for a given use case. No doubt, AM4 still has a significantly better upgrade path than z370/z390 or even z490 platforms. But for a person who last upgraded 8 years ago, what are the odds that person actually le...

Re: Time to update from 2011

to me the first question that has to be answered is "will the intel uhd 630 struggle with driving a 4k monitor and/or tv?" if the answer is 'yes', intel is far less compelling. if the answer is 'no' or 'it depends', the money saved by not investing in a 1030 makes it a little more interesting. I don...

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-MAX-WIFI/Specification looks like msi announced the max version of the b450 pro carbon ac, but it was only a few weeks ago. Given the state of things, it probably won’t hit shelves for a little while. Bios flashback is a per-motherboard feature...

Re: Time for a new silent PC? What to keep? What to replace? What to rethink?

From memory, pro carbon had some additional features and better VRM components vs the tomahawk. The tomahawk’s VRM/decent heatsink is adequate for all of the current am4 processors, though, notwithstanding overclocking. The MAX variants of MSU’s boards have a greater BIOS storage capacity. I’d proba...

Re: Fractal Design Define R7 & XL - Reviews and Discussion

the shroud is fairly perforated, and runs a little over half the length of the interior compartment. the case supports 3x120 or 3x140 front fans, with the bottom most fan's lower half being at-or-below shroud level. so there's a bit of overhang where (relatively cool) front intake can get 'trapped' ...

Re: Testing my understanding on case/build philosophy

I’ve had most of the same components in a meshify c mini and a define r6 (where they live now). I didn’t do any scientific testing, but I don’t think the r6 is much quieter. If I remove the top panel or open the door during a gaming load, I notice a difference only if I listen for it. However, I a.)...

Re: Testing my understanding on case/build philosophy

It’s worth remembering that for a d15(s), it uses 120mm fan mounting holes. So you can gain a hefty amount of ram clearance by a.) using a 120mm fan like the a12x25 on the ram side or b.) just moving the fan up a bit on the fin stack (d15 listed height is 165mm, r6’s max is 185mm. Unless you’re plan...

Re: How annoying are the fans on the new mobos?

Worst case scenario, I can always buy a x670 if the mobo is shit and keep the rest. if you're fine with this and don't have a need for pcie 4.0 (super fast storage) right now, you might be better off with a guaranteed quiet b450/x470 and the money saved can go to a x670/whatever if there are featur...

Sliger Cerberus is the smallest matx case I know while still being flexible in component choice. It doesn’t run cheap, however (~$245 USD for US delivery before accessories). They now have a European distributorso shipping costs aren’t as crazy as before. It’s a boutique product to be sure.

Re: There is no such thing as silent PC

Also, mini-ATX systems will be generally more noisy due to their size restraints. In this case, in a full-sized ATX case, you could have three intake fans and a 140mm exhaust at the back. a lot of micro atx cases, including the define c mini, are still rather large. that case in particular still al...

You can get DisplayPort cables up to ~15 feet/4.5m pretty cheap, and you can get usb hub/extension cables at a similar length for peripherals. I wasn’t sure if audio cable extensions would work well for a head set, but speakers shouldn’t be too hard. I wonder what tweaking you could do to your exist...

Re: GTX 1030 Video Decode Disapointment

I haven’t seen any performance benchmarks explicitly for video decoding, but nvidia did pull some shadiness with the gtx 1030. The card launched with 2GB of gddr5 memory, and people generally regarded it as a decent gpu for the price (think 1080p/60hz/low quality settings). Then about 10 months late...

on my x470-f gaming (and I assume all modern asus motherboards) the fan control has a 'feature' in which 1.) if the upper temperature is exceeded, the fan goes to 100% speed and 2.) the maximum upper temperature value is 75C. so if you want to rely on bios fan control, I would suggest setting the up...

Re: SilverStone KL07: Perfect case?

The r6’s shroud is perforated throughout. The cardboard seals off those openings, effectively removing the basement area from the volume of air that case fans have to move (and making the layout more similar to the kl07), and better directs the lower front fan’s air toward the gpu. Without the cardb...

Re: SilverStone KL07: Perfect case?

The fan was pointed fairly directly at the graphics card, though a 140mm would do a bit better to hit both sides of the card. In the process of trying different setups, I was reminded again that fan speed matters more than case construction/noise dampening (within reason)—having the side panel on vs...
