HDD upgrade in server - sys drive

I have WHS11 server based on this hardware http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=67905 . Currently it is populated with a 1,8TB system hd, a 3TB drive to host the dbase for the movie software (EMBY) and further 4X WD 4TB in mirror and 4X WD red 6 also in mirror for storage. I am ...

Re: Seagate Archive 8TB HD quiet?

I went with the WD red 6tb and it is pretty quiet to me. My WHS box in a closet in the living room 2 meters from where I write this. It has 4x4tb WD red and 4x6tb red and two other WD red disks. However I am running out of space on the server and the WD gold 12tb is a pretty competitive priced compa...

Seagate Archive 8TB HD quiet?

Any experience with the 8TB drive? I am looking into using it to strore my movies and the offer better bang for buck than the 6TB WD Red I am using now, but I can find no mention on how quiet they are? It is for a dedicated WHS11 box running EMBY server and has as of now 10 drives, most in RAID1 for...

Skylake NUC or Intel NUC D54250WYK2 or? ...for HTPC & madVR

I have a Mac Mini A1347 laet 2011, running win7 and EMBY Theater with MadVR. The GPU runs quite hot resulting in the fan running flat out and being quite noisy. I am looking to replace the box with something more silent. I cannot decide if I should wait for the Skylake nuc, brix, or what all the oth...

Re: WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

Thanks. Uh, I think in the eco app, I set to no power, and then it should spin up. It worked, but I had some strange reboots with only a kernel power event in Eventmanager. After removing the flag it ran fine. The memory modules are rma'ed, so is not running right now.

Re: WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

I'll put it in the startup folder (The server admin account login automatically so MB3s can start) and see if there are any parameters I can set. I got the CPU fan to stop when temps are below 47 degrees c. Nice one. Regarding the PSU, I am thinking about it. I have six WD 3 and 4 TB EFRX that draws...

Re: WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

I just installed the ECO Center Pro and while not being perfect, it is a real gem. The bios fan settings can be controlled from here and same for Eco mode: Eco, Lounge, Server and each can be setup individually: if the display port is on, audio, PCI etc. I hope it it not only the ports but also supp...

Re: WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

Thank you, Abula. Thats saves me a lot of time in setting it up :-) Status is that I am pretty satisfied with the board. The only snags being that there is no way to move a mirrored set disks without breaking the mirror in windows. Secondly one of the memory modules has failed. The computer suddenly...

Re: WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

I installed the hwmonitor instead and Windows WHS SMART add-in. The solution was to hack the driver and make it believe it was a i218-LM instead of a i218-V. There's does not appear to be any difference and it works flawlessly. So only a minor thing. Right now I am running the prime95 stress test wi...

Re: WHS11 server with MB3 what hardware?

I wonder what software to use to monitor it with. http://www.silentpcreview.com/SpeedFan Thx. There is also a MSI utility I'll check out: Command Center. Re: WHS11 server with MB3 what hardware?

Happy days. I have found these sata 6 gb locking cables at a reasonable price in Germany, so I will be ordering 20 for 11eur. I have had issues with poor cable connections, but buying ten is pricey here in dk, where the cheapest sata locking cable is 3eur for one. It's angled in one end, but that is...

Re: WHS11 server with MB3 what hardware?

Looks like the i5 will be ~5x faster than the 4850e for transcoding. I was thinking it would be fast enough to serve two steams to iPad and two not-transcoded steams to htpcs. Maybe that is wishful thinking, but one iPad steam and one htpc stream will do it. But most of the time it will be ideling....

Re: WHS11 server with MB3 what hardware?

It means going with the I5-4590 as it is the new Haswell refresh. The standard and the S and T parts are priced similar. The S version has the same turbo speed as the standard version, but uses less power in standard config. The T part is a bit of a mystery to me. I can undervolt in bios if I have t...

Thanks for mentioning the latency issues and for the suggestions.

I think I'll go with the MSI h97m Eco board.

Should I chose a i5 K/S/T CPU and which one? Are the S and T parts lower power only or also lower performance?

WHS11 server upgrade - i5 and MSI H97M ECO

I recently got hold of a gamer machine, so I could gut the MSI p67a-C45(b3), i5 2500 and DDr3 memory and sell of the rest. It was intended to be a low cost upgrade to a quad core (so I could see movies in MB3 on the iPad). Unfortunately I have discovered that my fractal design does not support full ...

I am thinking about replacing my htpc with a Mac mini running windows, as was advised on avsforum.
