Re: Used Scythe Quiet Drives available

Would he want all of them?

I'd probably send them by UK Royal Mail (www.royalmail.com), I did a quick price-up for shipping 1 within Europe it looked to be <£20. Shipping several in a single parcel probably wouldn't be much more than this.

Used Scythe Quiet Drives available

I some used Scythe Quiet Drive HDD enclosures available. It would be a shame to see them go into the rubbish bin, so I'm willing to give them away free-of-charge, so long as the recepient is willing to pay postage. They are ~1kg when packaged, I am UK based. I have: - 6 x 3.5" enclosures which are c...

Re: Why mount the hard drive like that?

Read the Google survey of failing hard drives. The top reason for drive failure is variance of temperature. We first look at the correlation between average temperature during the observation period and failure. Figure 4 shows the distribution of drives with average temperature in increments of one...

Re: Is x86 harder to develop for than RISC

Sounds like a bunch of mixed up bullshit to me. RISC v CISC died twenty years ago. That was back when people actually knew what the terms meant. These days the argument is basically a thin veneer over the I hate/love Intel thing. That, mixed up with aesthetic arguments about the orthogonality of ins...

I've used the Ivy Bridge Celeron and i3 models for HTPC use, and a bit of light desktop. The fan can be audible, the Celeron model seemed a little worse for this for some reason. Performance is ... well they're based on laptop CPUs, so you get similar performance to an SSD-sporting laptop. Decent en...

beos though i thought was far superior to os/2 and win95 and mac os 7 back in the day. It clearly wasn't superior in the ways that actually mattered, because it failed. i know beos had printer problems and was underdeveloped but i thought it was good foundation - that teapot demo was pretty awesome...

Re: What is your thoughts on BeOS from 90s?

I was a big fan of BeOS back then, but in hindsight it didn't stand a chance. I recall trying to port some of my UNIX codes (command-line driven, never mind the GUI) to BeOS and it was a pain compared to porting them to Linux. Linux made rapid advances in the server arena because it was a reasonably...

Thinking of getting something like this http://quietpc.co.uk/smartdrive-classic Holy ****!! £90??! I've used Smartdrives in the past, but really they are not worth £90. They were about £25 then and that made me cross my legs when I paid that. If you're going to spend that much you'd be better off r...

Re: Why couldn't POWERPC keep up with intel?

so um basically based on this history, how do you think arm vs intel will turn out? RISC may not be able to outperform intel on the high end but on the mobile end, the decode logic penalty creates a power drain. I wouldn't bet against Intel, certainly not if they're on their A game. Their design, e...

Intel knows what they are doing but their motives are questionable. Their motives aren't questionable at all. They may not be very agreeable, but they are very clear - make as much money as possible for as little outlay - which is what any business should do, including their competitor if they want...

If each die shrink raises temperature, then Haswell will be cooler than Broadwell, unless they fix the TIM / IHS. I'm never interested in overclocking anyway. What's unsettling is the reports of higher temperatures even at stock idle. Why are you worried about idle temperatures? Why would you be co...

Re: Why I won't recommend a Haswell system until August+

The problem that i see, is i feel Intel could have delivered a better CPU much powerful as Sandy Bridge was in its time, but the lack of competition is creating like a slack on intels part where they are focusing on things like iGPU and lower power mobile CPUs, and broadwell and skylake can be very...

Re: are pci-express ssd worth over sata?

how would mapped directly into the virtual address space change things? Because files stop being files and become persistent in-memory data-structures. Mass storage becomes credibly treatable as another level in the memory hierarchy (L1+L2+LLC+DDR, etc), that doesn't need to be treated differently ...

are they worth it? If your time is worth a lot of money, yes they are worth it. i would think maybe in a few years pci express ssd will be more common Possibly. I agree that in the future solid-state mass storage will move closer to the CPU in the future, and may even end up being mapped directly i...

It also powers USB devices that can be used to wake the system, for example keyboards. I have my system set to resume from S3 sleep at the press of a key - I couldn't achieve this without +5VSB. For the sake of 1W I think I can live with this. Each to their own I guess.

So July or August wouldn't be a big slip. Anyway my reasoning is that Intel are slapping their comp...

Sure it doesn't have anywhere close to the performance of this box, but at $35, it can run XBMC & play H.264 movies at 1080P. Really? That's a fairly rosy summary of what I've read at the XBMC forums about the Pi. My reading is more like: it runs XBMC, struggles with some of the skins, and will pla...

Do you use the PSU fan as the CPU fan? I don't. That's not to say it wouldn't work - I did think about trying it but it's a bit of a faff, and given that the graphics card dominates the noise signature I figured it wasn't likely to gain me much. I have the fan on the AXP mount blowing upwards thoug...

Re: Intel Next Unit of Computing Kit DC3217BY

Thanks for the review of this, it sounds very tempting. I'm a little surprised by the price - in a good way. It's not cheap, but I was expecting it to be closer to £300/$450 for the base unit, given it's Intel and all that. Hopefully it'll prompt the other mini-PC makers into a price war.
