Re: PC in aquarium full of mineral oil
Mineral oil is used in makeup, it's not likely to be very toxic.

Re: PC in aquarium full of mineral oil
But then your PC isn't fully submerged in liquid, it's running on CPU/GPU blocks, the PSU fan will be audible, ect. The limit of oil is it's surface area, which scales poorly, requiring far greater oil volume to make up for the 'low' surface area. Say our CPU heatsink alone has 880 sq/in (44 fins at...

Re: PC in aquarium full of mineral oil
Wicking shouldn't be a problem if you have a few solid cables. Tight groups like the ATX connector or braided cables would wick, but a SATA or HDMI cable wouldn't.

Re: PC in aquarium full of mineral oil
You should disregard the top of the case for dissipation purposes unless you have totally filled it to the brim without air bubbles. Assuming that the remaining surfaces can still dissipate enough heat you should have no trouble. I would recommend getting a wattmeter, you'll likely find your system ...

Re: Quiet but useful radiators - Recommendations?
I'm pretty sure you mean FIN density. All current radiators are pretty similar in performance, with only minor variations in ability at high fan speed, and almost none at low fan speed. The only exceptions are some of the HWLabs Black Ice series. The Swiftech MCR series performs well and tends to be...

Re: Is watercooling quieter than fan cooled?
That's true, but watercooling doesn't have the same restraints that aircooling does. You can add more radiating area with ease. So, modern aircooling uses a superior method, but modern watercooling can bruteforce it's way to the top. (and can do it pretty quietly) Watercooling's main benefit is GPUs...

Re: The search for the perfect radiator fan
There shouldn't be a significant difference in performance with different radiator orientations regardless of the chosen fans. The only possible problem is an air bubble, which would go to the top of the system and sit there. There's no decision about the ideal fan because there isn't one. Getting a...

Re: first time WC need help.
A reservoir isn't necessary, but you will need a way to fill the system. Without it you won't be able to easily fill the system. Your loop otherwise seems fine. I think the DD block may have incompatible holes. Is the one bolt you have in the 775 hole? You should look up the 1366 mounting holes and ...

Re: What pump do you use?
Why bother with a ram block at all? I haven't heard of any ram DIMMs that use more than 10W anyways.
If you must increase pump power, you could use two pumps in series/parallel.

I always try my best to put myself in the other person's shoes. When I'm talking about general use I think of the average person using Email and Web browsing, some flash games, storing pictures, and maybe some audio/video playback. From what I've seen, a good MB + HDD are the most important things f...

M-ATX MBs can have two GPUs in some cases, ITX can only have one. The case must be at able to hold the full height cards, so the case can't really be very small. You suredly can't fit a WC system into the case. A heavily OCed CPU, say at 300w, a 200w peltier, and a 200w GPU will require at least a 8...

I understand peltiers quite well, I used to be an extreme cooling type of guy, but I didn't really have funds. I spent quite a bit of time studying the various forms of sub ambient cooling, water cooling, and air cooling a several years ago. I should have said that they are efficient when both sides...

I just started reading this, and I have a few years of metalworking experience. Mostly with steel but some aluminum, and I've made some watertight boxes, so I thought I'd throw my 2c in. Making an accordion type of fin/vane thing will be very difficult to seal, even if it's steel. All gaps in the ba...

Well the reserator does hold a lot more water than most WC systems, so it'll take longer to get to the maximum temperature. Without the fans you may have a thermal runaway problem. The max dissipation of the reserator may not be enough to keep the processor cool over a several hour test. You should ...

Suggested fan speed doesn't really mean anything, XSPC's radiator is almost identical in performance to the MCR series with fans of the same speed and power. Buy whichever is cheaper. Since you already have a reserator, performance will be sufficient with a single fan radiator. I would expect a drop...

When I used the stock top at level 1 there would be some vibration and midrange, which got to the level of an 800RPM 120mm S-Flex at level 3. Level 5 was unusable. The new pump top is inaudible at any power setting. The only sound is a very slight hiss that can only be heard with the rest of the sys...

Based on the info I can find, the reserator's pump is rated at 300l/h and 0.5m head. That means that it can move up to 300 liters every hour. It can also lift the water 18" up. The actual rate in your system will be different, based on how restrictive the components are, but it can get a bit complic...

Oh yes, I'd forgotten that the swiftech kits only had the 655B. Well, from what I've heard, the reserator can cool a CPU/GPU combo, but I don't know how well. One issue with the reserator is that the tube that it is designed for is 3/8"ID. It's not a deal breaker, but it means that you'll have to ma...
