Re: Single Platter 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive?

Well I got the 320 GB single platter Hitachi drive and while it is inaudible at idle it has a fairly pronounced seek sound that I can't stand. So it is most likely going back to Newegg and I'll be getting something else.

Re: Single Platter 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive?

Hi, I have a WD Scorpio Black 7200rpm drive in my laptop and while it is nice and fast it's not that quiet. Audible whoosh from the spinning platters. The 5400rpm Scorpio Blue's are much quieter. Regards, Seb I tried a 500 GB WD Blue (BEVT) drive in my MacBook Pro and did not keep it there it becau...

Re: Silent case

I have a system in my sig housed in an Antec p182. It is very very quiet and runs cool enough. The only thing I can hear is the video card when the fan ramps up but there is nothing you can do about it.

I'd pick a p183 from your list.

Re: Single Platter 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive?

The only 500 GB single platter drive I was able to find recently was the 500 GB Hitachi. I wasn't able to find it available anywhere so I ordered a 320 GB from Newegg. It is in transit and I should get it sometime next week - hopefully I will remember to come back here and post my impressions.

Upgrade P182 to...

Hello all, My current gaming system is living in a P182 and it's working great. It is very quiet despite running an overclocked Core2Quad (Q9400 @ 3.8 Ghz), 2 hard drives and an NVidia GTX 260. I've got a 12cm based tower heatsink (some Ninja model) and 2 800 rpm S-FLEX fans running at 7v. I'm plann...

Opinions on Antec DF-85?

Hello all,

I wonder what SilentPCReview thinks about the Antec DF-85? I don't expect it to be silent but I wonder if it's a decent case. I'm enjoying my 182 and it's a great case and pretty quiet.

Thanks!

I am not sure that 430W PSU will be sufficient and even if it will be, it will be loud as it will be running at high load. Get something like a Seasonic 600W PSU and it will be quieter. Regarding memory, if you want 4GB then you need a 64-bit OS and realistically it means Vista. Vista is a fine OS b...

I wasn't able to find a Nexus fan in retail around here quick so I had to get whatever was out there. My PC was actually resonating and I could hear it in another room

Thanks for the advice, next time it breaks I'll get Nexus.

Thanks for help everyone this is what I did: 1. Went to local electronics store http://www.vetcosurplus.com/ and purchased 2 Zalman fans for $10 total. Fans appeared to be FB123, or exactly the same fans as I had on the HSF, just the frame was different 2. Cut out the frame on the new fan and glued ...

How to fix a fan on Zalman 7000Cu?

Hello all, One of the blades on my Zalman 7000Cu fan broke and now the fan is resonating and shaking the whole case  What can I do to fix this? I've already asked Zalman for a spare fan but they are silent so far. Can I fit another fan there or what should I do? I don't want to buy another HS...

Oh thanks a lot Rusty. I will try to disconnect all hard drives but one and I assume the sound will disappear.

I'm afraid an option to suspend the drives is too difficult, I will try to do something with the case, like put it on a mat or something.

At least now I know what this is!!! :D

Help with low frequency vibrations

Hello all, I'd appreciate if you could help me troubleshoot the behavior of my machine. It is a "Ralf reference design", 3700AMB with 120mm fan @5v in the back, cool and quiet Celeron 2.4 Ghz and nice Fortron 300W PSU. It also has 3 hard drives (2x160GB Seagate 7200.7 and 1x200GB Seagate 7200.7) tha...

Yes the clearance is about 4-5mm. Much less than the Rheobus. Well, X-21 isn't such a great case anyway :)

What I'm about to say is very subjective but here you go:
1. Black Knight has _NO_ airflow because the front air vents are very small.
2. I think I have one of the other two and it is not as solid as Antec 3700 (which I also have) - the side door rattles, etc.

Overall I'd recommend Antec 3700.

I have both the case and the Rheobus. I'll try to measure tonight. If I had to guess I'd say that it won't fit - the door it thick on that case. Also, I have Antec 3700 and much prefer it to the Trinity - Trinity has thinner metal and is in general cheaper made - the only reason I have it is because...

The reason why Win2000 is not recommended is because it does not know that one of the CPUs is "virtual". Only WinXP and above knows that if you have a HT-enabled CPU then there is 1 "real" CPU and 1 "virtual" CPU and it schedules accordingly. Win2000 thinks there are 2 "real" CPUs and so scheduling ...

As someone who actually owns a Celeron :P (but no P4 here) I can say that my Celeron [email protected] Ghz is somewhat equal to my AMD 2000+. So I guess P4 2.4 would be faster, esp. if you can o/c it.

You are both right that there is a "real life" complication that there isn't always enough WUs of a given type and not enough PCs of a given type to do a "proper" mapping. Hence we are stuck with Tinkers running on p4 with SSE2 producing 3x times less "science" per time interval.

The controversy is that a particular CPU can be vastly superior on a particular WU if it supports a particular instruction set (like SSE). If it does not then it runs in "compatibility mode" which is much slower. Like running Windows under Linux or something. Can't be good. And since I'm forced to d...

Actually even for people who folded for some time already and have peaked their hardware/budget it is very pleasing to extract 4k PPW of "2k PPW worth" hardware. I'm personally very excited to get over 4k PPW now while I was struggling to get over 2k PPW just last month.

Bugz damn bugz!!! :)

Edit:
The issue is that FAHLogStats is ignoring 2 of my 5 boxes and calculates the PPW for the whole farm based on 3 machines instead of 5. PPW for individual machines are calculated correctly.
