I suspect, as people have suggested, that the logic/firmware in this enclosure is too old to handle a 300GB drive. I think I'll put the 120GB drive back into it and get a new enclosure for the 300GB drive. I had planned to get a second enclosure anyway so I could use both the 120GB and 300GB drives ...
