Re: WD Green vs. WD Red for quietness?

Interestingly it seems that a lot of people who have been complaining about the loud clunking sound seem to have RMA'd the drives and received more silent ones in return.

Re: Western Digital Red 4TB & Se 4TB Hard Drives

I don't know if this affects 6TB models since they might have been released after? The whole thing sounds weird, but at the same time, WD did make quite a significant change to the specs on seek noise, and it would seem like there is a lot more people around the internet complaining about loud seeks...

Re: WD Green vs. WD Red for quietness?

All new Reds in sale are now the louder ones. I'm not sure if the difference begins with NasWare 2.0 vs NasWare. I think they did it to increase performance (they must internally disable Automatic Acoustic Management). By HDTune, average seek is better now - 16 vs 21 ms, but hell they are so loud n...

Re: Western Digital Red 4TB & Se 4TB Hard Drives

Are the WD Red 3 & 4TB reviews still relevant? I'm planning on building a new NAS and was wondering why so many people where complaining about loud seeks (only when using WD Reds). Seems even here there is some mention about it on one thread: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=...

Re: please critique my home ZFS build

Are you planning on doing a review? How noisy is the 40mm fan? Do you think it could be made silent? Yes. Have not isolated just that fan yet. Measured only whole system so far. Probably can be made effectively silent -- or very quiet. It's a very low power CPU/PC so... Thanks, any ETA on when you'...

Re: please critique my home ZFS build

As long as you don't need to grow beyond 4 drives, the HP Proliant Microserver might work for you. WOW! That's perfect! A whole system that supports ECC RAM for $300! And it's cooled with a 120mm fan! I just ordered two of them; thank you! Not exactly just one 120mm fan. There's also a wee 40mm fan...

Or is it that the baseline noise of average PCs has gone down so much lately that silencing them isn't so interesting to a wide audience? This would be my guess. Also manufacturers are paying more attention to the amount of noise their products put out. A few years ago you would be lucky to see a m...

AlexNC, you would'nt happen to have the chance to pop it open and see if a thicker (3mm thicker then standard) drive would fit inside? are you speaking of the WD VelociRaptor? I just got a unibody macbook today at work and a WD Scorpio Black HD with it. I've been using the TS-109 for about a week and so far it seems pretty nice. As mentioned there is no fan, so the only sound comes from the hard disk. Synology NAS experiences?

I'm still contemplating on getting a NAS, but there is no good info available on the noise levels they produce. I'm especially intrested in the Synology DS-207+ as it seems to perform very well, has working afp and ssh access (so you can install separate apps if you want). I have also been consideri...
