Re: Where to buy good silent hard drive in UK?
Anyone point me in the right direction?? Call me obvious, but how about looking at the thread entitled "Sticky for the UK" in the "Deals, Vendors & Classifieds" forum. There are loads of vendors some of which are general, some of which are specialist. One particular general vendor (and quite random...

Re: Using Aerocool DP-102 in same Case
I have the same case for my HTPC. I use an AeroCool DP-102 and 2 Panaflo L1A @ ~6.5V to cool a 2400+ XP-M @2.3GHz. The best part about the the DP-102 is the fact that you change the fan orientation to blow the exhaust out the back. Well - I've just done the same thing.. some comments and observatio...

Re: mATX undervoltable SoA mobos..
So what's the current state-of-the-art in terms of undervoltable micro-ATX Socket-A motherboards? ... I was planning to run an XP-M 2400+ Barton at something approaching 1.1V and maybe 1000MHz. The undervolting would ideally be done in BIOS, not windows software since I plan to use Linux. .... EDIT...

FWIW.. since people have been complaining about JVC motors on Spinpoints I thought I should mention that I recently ordered a 1614N (160G 8M cache PATA) from www.overclockers.co.uk and it had a Nidec on it. Having said that - I'm not sure I like overclockers that much any more - first they don't kno...

Re: Using Aerocool DP-102 in same Case
I've ready forums which suggest that you can rotate the fan "frame" to any direction, not just a factor of 90 degree - but the pics in all the reviews I've seen all have the frame in the default config. :( so which is it? Ok, I've done some research: In this thread silvervarg states: It is possible...

because the Power Supply is blowing hot air into the case it overheated. It does what?? That's very weird - unless of course you have an Antec Overture - that's the only PSU I know that blows inwards. As to heatsink choice - I don't know what to suggest - personally I'd like to get a HSF which sucks air off the HS - so maybe something like an Alpha PAL8045T. I'll keep the HT-101 for another project. Other than that, sorry, don't know what to suggest - just make sure it's less than 10cm, or, say ...

mATX undervoltable SoA mobos..
So what's the current state-of-the-art in terms of undervoltable micro-ATX Socket-A motherboards? I was earlier looking for an ATX board but this one must be a Micro-ATX. Also, I'd like it to go down to 1.1V. I've been browsing most of today and often it's pretty hard to figure out from manuals whet...

You don't mention your video source. Now, ok, this isn't the best idea, and the quality leaves something to be desired but if you are encoding from a composite video source then you could always use a hardware MPEG4 encoder (on a PCI card) with a fanless VIA thingy and that should do some ok-ish enc...

My advise: Fan on the back of the case. I think you will find amazingly low airflow coming out of your duct, still it will cool sufficiently. I don't expect any major disadvantages from using a 63mm duct, as volume transported isn't that large, and the duct is short. A 63mm duct might also be more ...

Beware that you might end up with vibrations that are enhanced be the duct. Doucoupling or use of semi-soft materials (e.g. soft plastic) will reduce this effect. Very good point - one of my plans was to have the fan on the CPU and have a duct (maybe two joined ThermalTake DuctingMods ?) pointing a...

Yes, you lose a lot of airflow and get some noise ("whooshing") from the corrugated collapsible ducts like the Sunbeam - to the point where some reviewers reported a temp rise with the Sunbeam duct. Very true - I didn't realise it was such a problem until I read this tidbit on ducting systems Impor...

This Alpha duct can be used either sucking or blowing. A drier vent part from BestBuy....fits the Alpha perfectly. I used it with the fan on the case end.....ended up with a 92mm fan there. After consulting (theory and practise) on making friend's and family's computers quieter for ages I finally got down to silencing the monster on my desktop. Ah.. just noticed you run Raptors - and that's a 10k RPM drive - and that'll probably make it run pretty hot.. especially if there is no cooling from the drive cage. My question is this: would not having the drives grounded to the case cause this? I don't know.. it's possible I guess. 600-800? How's that? We don't know which Papst fan it is. Matte: Find out the RPMs at 12V.. either from specs.. or plug it into the mobo and read RPMs with a program like MBM.. then multiply by 5/12. RPMs usually scale linearly with voltage. i.e. a Papst 8412NGML ( 2050rpm@12V ) at 5V spins at about...
