Re: TVHeadend build - PSU fan as air mover for CPU
So, if in doubt - ping the mfgr's tech support to see if the mobo you like has the option. So, I bounced a few e-mails with ASUS technical support. The general response was to refer me to other ASUS motherboard models and that I should have a look at the manual for that motherboard or search for re...

Re: TVHeadend build - PSU fan as air mover for CPU
So I've given this some more thought. i7-8700T is hard or impossible to source, realistically outputs more than 35W, and is locked. i7-8700 is locked. i7-9600K is more powerful than I need. i5-9600K should be ok. It's also unlocked, but 95W TDP. So now comes the question - how does one undervolt now...

Re: TVHeadend build - PSU fan as air mover for CPU
Since the PSU is top mounted in this case and there isn't top ventilation, by default the PSU has to be mounted intake fan side down (facing the CPU). How well it could pull air through the CPU cooler is a fun science project. I'd lean toward the Noctua (if it'll fit) as the top of the cooler would...

Re: TVHeadend build - PSU fan as air mover for CPU
Did that on an really old mini-ITX system. The psu fan was the only fan in the system. On some modern PSUs it's possible to set fan curves and what sensor it reads. For example on my current psu(corsair hx1000i), I can use a software called iCUE to set the psu fan speed dependent on CPU temp or oth...

TVHeadend build - PSU fan as air mover for CPU
I'm looking to build a very quiet TVheadend system. It'll be on 24/7 so I'm not going to go completely fanless. I might also be running a handful of other services on the box (Zoneminder perhaps), so I'd rather have a little oomph in the CPU. I'm going for a uATX board, so I have some slots to play ...

Re: Streacom DB6 - a heatpipe dream?
What is the price? I only found an "expected" price of $350. Where can you buy it? I don't think you can. It looks like it was announced but never actually released. I also seem to remember reading the price was around $350. I'd pay $350 for it (probably translates to £350 down my neck of the woods...

Streacom DB6 - a heatpipe dream?
It's been pretty much exactly one year since the Streacom DB6 was made public . I've been holding my breath but I'm starting to turn purple. For those intrigued (I couldn't find mention of it on SPCR), here are some year old videos: "A Case That's an 18kg Heatsink! - Streacom DB6" by HardwareCanucks...

Re: HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8
The upside to the Gen8 is that it, if BIOS supports, could be upgraded to an i5-3470T, or with a TDP stretch to 45W, perhaps an i7-3770T. However, I've not yet seen any confirmation that either of these would work. Not sure if you require it (I would), but the i5-3470T doesn't have ECC. Anyway, her...

Re: Mike's final sign-off
Wow. Disaster. It's hard to believe SPCR may be gone soon. I've never been big on consumer tech sites and all the well known ones are obviously influenced by their sponsors/corrupt - but SPCR was the first (and I think ever) tech site I've ever signed up to. The technical quality of the reviews and ...

Thanks for the responses - sorry I didn't get back sooner but I ended up buying the board (not much choice really - I needed three slots and something like an Atom) and have been offline for a bit. I did read about the lanes and that it's a negotiable thing but it made me then think why not have mot...

PCI Express x16, but 1 lane?
Hi everyone, Well, after six years of good service my underclocked, undervolted XP2500+ has given up the ghost - specifically the mobo's gone - everything else is fine. No matter - I've already got a Point of View MB-D510-MATX on order to replace it. The manual (not available at the web site, but so...

Thanks guys. I don't think I will RMA the drive - it works perfectly fine in the USB enclosure. The only place it doesn;t work is hanging off a SATA1 (Sil3114) controller with an old BIOS. I would upgrade the BIOS and it would probably work fine but there is no BIOS available which is incorporated i...

Thanks guys. I did try connecting the WD drive by itself but the boot sequence hung at the same place (just before printing the disk size). I tried different ports too. In the end I bought a USB/eSATA HDD enclosure and the disk is running fine with no problems at all. My only gripe is that the USB i...

WD10EACS and oldish onboard SATA-I problem..
Guys, I was hoping someone could shed some light on a problem I'm having. I have a DFI NFII Ultra Infinity motherboard which has an onboard Silicon Image SATA1 3114 controller and I have three SAMSUNG HD501LJ happily hanging off three of the four SATA ports (non-RAID). I've now tried to add a Wester...

I'm not sure about Canada but in the UK Stroopwafels are available in $tarbucks. Other than that, dutch produ...

I have no experience in Ubuntu (I'm a Slackware fan) but what might have happened is that when installing the boot loader you simply forgot to add the windows partition to the menu. If they're TV recordings then the chances are it's DiVX/Xvid, is it? More and more DVD players are capable of playing Divx/Xvid files without re-conversion. ..and I'm not talking about some cheapo brands which want a differentiator and are aiming for a niche market - even brands like Pioneer can pla...

Ok, for the record it was an app called atkosd2 - which is the app that draws stuff on the screen (I guess OSD is the giveaway) when you increase or decrease volume and use any of the Fn keys. I think it's this smart pre-fetching of disk contents into RAM that it's doing. I too recently got a new Vista install on a new laptop and found it was grinding the disk a lot. However, I also noticed that it only does it for the first ten minutes or so - once it's prefetched all the stuff that it g...

Ok, I'll answer my own question
I've found a few apps that may do this:

http://www.imagos.ru/mihon/.
I've given the laptop away now so I can't test what was getting in the way.
