And there's no way to tell without having the actual board and manual on hand to play with. Unfortunately that's true. And I totally agree with you that one should not trust the manufacturer claim and manual. However I do not think we should condone Manufacturers putting vague wordings. Under UK co...

Are those P4 MicroATX MSI motherboard undervoltable?
A few possibilities: MSI P4MAM-V (MS-6787 v2.1) Manual states vcore is adjustable (and screenshots shows a low vcore). Note: P4MAM2-V doed not have adjustable vcore anymore MSI 845GEM/GVM (MS-6714 v5.x) Manual shows a screenshots with "CPU Vcore adjust", but no mention in the description. Could anyo...

PC Chips P4 MicroATX M935DLU is *not* undervoltable
At last, I may have found an undervotable MicroATX P4 motherboard. According this page: http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?DetailID=228&MenuID=22&LanID=0 the PC Chips M935DLU (v1.2) has the following feature: Over-Clocking Maximizes your system performance by selecting fro...

don't forget that Dell uses NO THERMAL paste at all and they have tons of pretty quiet computers out there that aren't overheating. Actually that's a myth: I have installed quite a lot of Dell desktops, workstations and servers over the years, and with each new model I had a close look at their coo...

It depends on your case design and components, but my case benefited from turning it upside down and I have been using it this way for a few weeks now. See the following thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=5731 I have also found that many of Dell new dekstops actually have their...

Hi Mike! Have you tested or seen them by yourself? I don't see anywhere that they provide Vcore control... I downloaded the manuals & checked. Looks like 1.1-1.84V is pretty standard for a lot of AOpen boards; I have 2 that also provide the same (vert similar, anyway)... I purchased a mATX motherbo...

Re: Mini review: Maxtor Maxline II 300GB
The drive will likely run cooler inside the case since it will be either in an active airflow if behind an intake fan and/or gain a heatsink effect if hard mounted. A case with good airflow may even provide lower temps on a passively cooled, suspended drive than did your free-air test. I see your p...

How much did you pay for the drive? I bought it through my company as I am planning to get 24 of those for mirroring the storage on our live site. I have just bought one for testing first, slightly lower than the retail price (through our account manager) from dabs (in uk) which currently sells it ...

Mini review: Maxtor Maxline II 300GB
Don't expect too much from this: I had 15 mins yesterday to look at a Maxtor Maxline II 300GB in a quiet environment (my HTPC in the living room) and here are my first impressions. I compared it to the 80GB IBM 180GXP which is temporarily in my HTPC; as you probably know the 180GXP is loud and hot, ...

I just heard form the Lex distibutor. They are $45 US per set (board, cables, etc) + $10 S&H 1-5 units. I wonder why thery are so expensive in europe? That's less than half the price we can get it in Europe! Sounds to me like Linitx is having a huge markup on those. Anyone knows of another source? ...

@ez2remember, let us know how you get on. You are probably right that 110W might be sufficient. If I used it with my HTPC, I think my power requirements are below 110W: 47W Pentium 4 1.6a <11W (?) Quiet DVD-Rom: LiteOn LTD-166s (or JLMS XJ-HD166S)
I recently ordered a LiteOn LTD-165H for a PC at work. I did not need anything quiet, but needed a drive that could read all formats and had good error correction. The 165 fitted the bill and was available to buy. I was delivered a LTD-166S instead, which seemed quite interesting as it has the follo...

I think 5400rpm drive in a HTPC is the way to go: usually cooling conditions are less than ideal in such a box and 5400rpm drives help keep the temperature down. The problem is getting a large capacity drive. After reading all the reviews and specs, it seems that the Samsung SV1606N 160GB is the bes...

I have to agree with Arman68 about the mobile P4. These should be the ultimate HTPC chips. A desktop board does not support speedstep technology so you get a 12x multiplier with the mobile P4. ( 12 x 100fsb = 1.2 ). However the latest mobile P4's have a 133 fsb, so 12 X 133 = 1.6. I cannot find any...

I would say P4 1.6a are an excellent choice for a HTPC- just make sure you get a 512KB L2 cache with 1.5v vcore as they generate less heat than the rest and make it easier to silence your PC. For TV capture, just use a card with hardware encoding. Here are some stats for 0.13micron P4 with 1.5v vcor...

Anyone using the Seasonic SS-200 SFD?
I am looking at replacing the mATX PSU which came with my Yeong Yang YY-A105 case with a quieter one. To be honest the supplied PSU is quiet and has a thermally controlled fan but it is still too noisy for my taste. The Seasonic SS-200 SFD is the only mATX PSU recommended by SilentPCReview. If anyon...

I am currently in the process of setting up a HTPC using a mATX Yeong Yang YY-A105 case (I still need to replace the PSU) and thought it would be useful to share my good vibes about this case (all the YY-Axxx actually) when used as a tower (it can also be used as a desktop). I have had my P4 2.53Ghz "passively" cooled for a while now and have not had any problem, even during the hot weather spells. I am not even using a good heatsink: it's a cheap bog standard aluminium heatsink (coolermaster) which I got a long time ago before I knew any better. The fan on it was quite...
